RE: [gatortalk] The direction of Gator Football

Sorry to disappoint you.   Saturday was no fluke.

Forget for a minute that the Las Vegas line had us as 19 point favorites.

Forget also that we'd beaten Kentucky 27 straight games.  You see, this is why the game is still important to play.

This is this year.  It's still an SEC opponent.  We're installing a new offense.  It's brand new.  No matter how much they practice, it's still new.

They had/have kinks to work out.  They are going to be working them out for the entire season.  These are good players, but they are not supermen.

It works this way with any team trying to install a new offense.

About this SEC opponent.  They have a new, good coach.   He's been there for a year.  His newness has worked itself out.

His offense figured out early that we're inexperienced in the secondary.  They exploited that weakness.

That's offense and defense of the Florida Gators.

The fact we still pulled it out of the fire and won with all the mistakes is a pretty good sign.

Remember just last week there were a couple of pundits who picked Kentucky to upset us?

I guess Lee Corso isn't so senile after all.

I think we'll have a fairly good season.  We'll make a pretty good bowl game, better than the Music City Bowl.

We have to look at this team realistically.  They are doing pretty well considering everything.

You can't just randomly pick a game and say, "If we don't win this one, we should fire Muschamp."

Just let the season play out.  Stop at the end and ask, did the team improve?

Then decide what to do with Muschamp.

I really hope Saturday was a fluke.  I want to be wrong.  I do like Roper, although I wish the offense could pick up the tempo.  (It took Auburn about 4-5 games last year to get up to speed so I am still hopeful.)

I agree with Charlie about our record over the next two games.  If we loose badly to Alabama, and then loose to Tennessee, we have to look hard at the future.

It may well be that our problems on the D side are short term.  I find it hard to understand why but we are starting a lot of new players.  If things quickly improve and the D keeps us in the game against Alabama, my confidence will be back to seeing things through Orange and Blue glasses.

I say give him two  more games, if he is 2-0 or 1-1 let him finish the season, if he's 0-2 I'm bringing the pitchfork.

Some very WISE advice, oh wise one!  I wished you would have sent this earlier today. The 2 Gator fans I work with caved under the immense pressure from the Vols fans and are ready to fire this coaching staff today. I agree with you and think we need to let this season play out before getting the mob together.

Go Gators!!!!

I think it is too early to define this team. They had one brilliant game against a dramatically outmatched opponent and a very difficult game against an opponent that was surprisingly good. That is just not enough to go on. Our team may not turn out to be very good this year... that's possible, but it may also be that UK's strengths just happened to match up particularly well (or badly, from our perspective) against our weaknesses. We need a few more weeks before we'll know what this team will turn into. It would have been premature to judge USC after TA&M, or VaTech after Ohio State, and it's still too soon to judge this team. Let's get a few more games down the road, then see if we're looking respectable or if it's time for pitchforks and torches.

I did not propose anything.  Muschamp has been here four years and we are struggling against Kentucky?  I know it is early.  However, if  we played like we did Saturday, we might end up with a worse record than last year.  Vandy and Eastern Kentucky are our only probable wins.  We might squeak by Tennessee as well.

I have watched at least a half from the rest of the teams this year except of F$U.  All of them appear to be much better than we are.

The truth be known, I am more worried about our program than I have been ever before.

We play one SEC game and you're proposing this?

That doesn't even make sense.  Even Zook got the Mississippi State game.

Possibly, Doc. But not during a week we are leading the SEC East.

After watching the game last night, I was reminded of last season and of
Dark days of Gator football dating back to those days that Vince Dooley
had our number.  I had thought that I was forever finished with the old,
³Wait until next year.²  I had some reasonable hopes for this year.  Last
night, the only team in the SEC we could have beaten would be Vandy.

I thought our defense would be much better.  (Did our linebackers play?)
I knew that our offense would be a work in progress but I was blind-sided
by our defensive problems.  I was counting on our defense to keep up in
the game until our new offense began to gel.  After last night, that would
appear to be a pipe dream.

Two years ago, I expected Coach Muschamp to be an upper level coach.
After four years, I am afraid that he may be another Ron Zook. We seem to
be a long way from competing with South Carolina, Georgia, Auburn, Texas
A7M, LSU, and Alabama.

Is it time for a new coach?

Jerry
