[gatortalk] FW: [gatornews] [SUN]: Dooley: Games only coaches can enjoy - "THE BACK NINE"

17. The Tweet of the Week goes to whoever sends out the tweets for Gators Football. After LSU had some weather problems Saturday, LSU Football sent out this tweet — "Because of lightning in the area, the spring game will not be resumed at Tiger Stadium." To which Gators Football tweeted, "#SafetyFirst" with emojis of an alligator and a tiger. That is deliciously funny considering what happened last October.

If you haven't seen this…  I also saw a couple of LSU fans responding to the UF tweet saying Florida lacks class.  LSU talking about class???    :   )

THE BACK NINE

Dooley: Games only coaches can enjoy

The Back Nine comes at you after an excellent weekend that included a 98-minute softball game, an important grand slam (aren't they all?) and not one second of spring football games.

10. There is no answer. That's what I've figured out. There is no way to make spring games interesting AND coaches happy. And yet there were 381,494 fans who "attended" 11 SEC spring games (Tennessee released no attendance numbers, Vandy had no spring game and Arkansas is this weekend). I put quotes on attended because some of them were estimated crowds. We all wish those same people who estimate spring crowds could estimate our net worth. But I digress. Spring games are a necessary evil, but they are about as entertaining as watching someone clean out a dryer filter. I've always thought it would be better to play against another team, but coaches don't want to show anything and worry about injury. So spring games will continue to be what they are — two hours of content for the SEC Network. And an excuse to tailgate.

11. I heard Colin Cowherd say the other day that he was rooting for Tim Tebow to fail at baseball because he didn't want anybody to think baseball isn't hard. I wonder if he rooted against Antonio Gates or Jimmy Graham when they went from basketball to football. Tebow was hitting .218 going into Monday night's game with two homers and nine RBI, but he had three hits Friday and two Sunday. Haters gonna hate, but why anyone would wish anything bad for Timmy is beyond me.

12. The smile on the face of Florida's JJ Schwarz was fueled by pure joy after his grand slam Saturday led Florida to a big win over South Carolina. And he was brutally honest after the game talking about his own lack of confidence. We will see if that one swing of the bat can turn his season around, but we do know this — Florida needs Schwarz to be Schwarz if the Gators are going to make a deep run in the postseason. People saying he should sit down don't understand how important he is to the team. By the way, Florida is seventh in the latest RPI, which means the Gators are back in the running for the all-important national seed with the soft part of the schedule ahead of them before they close the season against SEC East leader Kentucky. Buckle up.

13. So Ole Miss came into town as a ranked softball team and left without scoring a run in three games. It sets up a big weekend series in Knoxville against Tennessee. It's Florida's last SEC series and the Gators can clinch with two wins. Back in the old days, there used to be something we called the "Lisa Raymond Tanning Hour" because the women's tennis star used to dispatch her opponents in an hour or less. That's what it feels like when Kelly Barnhill pitches. This much I know — you need a dominant pitcher to win it all in Oklahoma City.

14. Sometimes you get on a roll and you just ride it and that's exactly what the Florida women's golf team did in Birmingham over the weekend. Emily Glaser, the women's coach who has done a tremendous job, is another one of those typical Jeremy Foley hires — someone young and personable who is an assistant coach who has been around success. Glaser said she was sitting on the 17th tee Sunday with Maria Torres and Torres (who finished in fourth individually) asked, "How are we doing?" Glaser flashed a big smile and said, "We're doing really well." I'd say. Florida shot 22-under for the tournament, the best score in the event by six shots and won by 13. SEC championships are still a big deal around here so the ladies should enjoy the first one for UF in nine years.

15. And with that, Florida is in great position to win yet another SEC All-Sports Award presented by GateHouse. UF has a commanding lead in the overall, as well as the men's and women's with three sports still to be decided (baseball, softball and track and field). I like UF's chances. Texas A&M is in second in all three categories.

16. I am so old that I remember when I used to sit in front of a TV at work and watch the NFL draft in the middle of a weekday afternoon. Then, it wasn't this long and drawn out ordeal. And then we'd try to get in touch with drafted players using something called a "landline" phone and bang out a story on something called a "typewriter." It is amazing how many knuckleheads there are who put their futures in jeopardy because they can't put down the pipe for a couple of months. I'm not naming names.

18. It began Sunday, my new workout plan. It does not include 25-ounce beers or chicken wings or passing on the gym because it's too far. And it does include this playlist:

n "Name For You" by The Shins.

n "Kicking the Heart" by Rogue Wave.

n "Bowl of Oranges" by Bright Eyes.

n "Crooked Teeth" by Death Cab for Cutie.

n And for an old one "America" by Simon & Garfunkel.

Vandy has our number in certain sports it seems.  BTW I read Womens golf has the only SEC championship for this year although I suspect Womens softball will be there when all is said and done.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — When top-ranked Florida has won the doubles point this season it has led to a win. All 22 times. But not Sunday with a title on the line in the SEC Tournament championship match.

Florida (23-3), the tourney's third seed, easily captured the doubles point against Vanderbilt with impressive wins on courts one and two, where Anna Danilina-Ingrid Neel upset Vanderbilt's third-ranked pair of Emily Smith-Astra Sharma, 6-3, just before Kourtney Keegan-Brooke Austin topped Emma Kurtz-Sydney Campbell, 6-2.

Top-seeded and second-ranked Vanderbilt (20-5), however, used its home court advantage and flipped the switch in singles action where it captured four wins to claim the 4-3 win at the indoor Currey Tennis Center on the campus of Vanderbilt University.

"I thought we once again, payed fantastic doubles," UF coach Roland Thornqvist said. "That's been the highlight all weekend. We have become a much more aggressive team in doubles. It paid off all three days — we won all three doubles points against incredible doubles teams.

"I thought we played well in singles today, too. Vanderbilt, you have to give them credit. They have great ball tolerance and in a couple of matches that really made a difference."

Despite the adversity of not having their complete lineup with junior Josie Kuhlman unavailable due to being up all night and time in a local hospital with a stomach illness, the Gators still had their chances in singles. After Florida took the quick 1-0 lead in the team score after winning the doubles point, Vanderbilt evened the team score with a straight-setter on court one.

Keegan swung the lead back in Florida's favor with an efficient 6-3, 6-2 win on court five. Keegan also won all three doubles matches at the SEC Tournament, posting a combined 4-0 record and earned a spot on the all-tournament team.

Vanderbilt came back and evened the team score again with a three-setter on court two, where freshman Ingrid Neel dropped her match.

Danilina gutted out a three-setter, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, and Florida held a 3-2 lead. Danilina won two singles matches during the event, as well as a pair of doubles matches and also earned a spot on the all-tournament team.

With the team score at 3-2, Florida needed just one more singles win but unfortunately, the hometown Commodores crowd maxed out the indoor facility with fans and made their presence felt as they helped Vanderbilt collect the final two wins.

Men's golf: At St. Simons Island, Georgia, Florida escaped the quarterfinals of match play after a playoff, but in the semifinal match play round, the Gators would not find the same luck.

The Gators opened the day with Alejandro Tosti going to his second playoff in as many days. After splitting with South Carolina 2-2, Tosti and the Gamecocks' Will Miles headed to a playoff to determine what team would get the final point.

After sinking a clutch par putt on the first playoff hole that held on the edge of the cup before dropping in, the junior shut South Carolina down when he carded a four and Miles carded a five on the 20th hole of the match. By notching a par in his final hole, Tosti finished off his second-straight bogey-free round.

Following their defeat of the Gamecocks, the Gators advanced to the semifinal match play round where they faced off with Vanderbilt. After splitting 2-2 with the Commodores, attention turned to Andy Zhang. The freshman was two-down heading to the 16th hole, one-down heading to the 18th and managed to finish the hole all square, forcing a playoff.

Facing off against fellow freshman John Augenstein, Zhang carded a four on the first playoff hole, advancing to the 20th hole of the match. After both players fired their drives deep down the middle of the fairway, Zhang landed his approach shot on the fringe while Augenstein placed his shot within 10 feet of the hole. Zhang missed his putt from off the green and Augenstein sank his for birdie, winning the playoff for the Commodores.

Texas A&M and Vanderbilt will face off today for the title.

The Gators will compete at the NCAA Regional Tournament beginning May 15.

Egor Koulechov, right, has filed the necessary paperwork to officially join the Florida men's basketball team as a graduate transfer.

    [Ben Margot/Associated Press]
    Published: Thursday, April 20, 2017 at 4:26 p.m.
    Last Modified: Thursday, April 20, 2017 at 4:26 p.m.

Florida's newest addition, Rice graduate transfer swingman Egor Koulechov, won't suit up for a game until November.

Yet anxious Gator fans have already coined a nickname for the incoming fifth-year senior -- Three-Gor.

The 6-foot-5, 210-pound Koulechov (COO-luh-chov) shot 47.4 from 3-point range for Rice last season, an eye-popping number that would have ranked third nationally among Division I players had he not barely fallen short of the minimum five attempts per game (he was at 4.9 attempts).

Regardless, it adds a significant perimeter threat on the floor for Florida, which announced Koulechov's signing Thursday.

"We're thrilled to have Egor come to Florida and join the Gator family," Florida coach Mike White said. "Along with his obvious offensive firepower, Egor will also bring a level of toughness and experience to our team."

But Koulechov wants to let Gator Nation know that he's more than just a shooter. At Rice last season, Koulechov averaged 18.2 points and 8.9 rebounds to earn first-team, Conference USA honors. Koulechov, who began playing basketball in Israel when he was 13, said the first aspect he gravitated to in the game was rebounding.

"That kind of stuck to me," Koulechov said. "Toughness, I just think it's one of the most important parts of the game. I always try to play my hardest, try to outplay the opponent. Shooting is great, it's all hard work at the end of the day. You've just got to work on your craft to get better."

Koulechov will need to rebound against bigger wings in the SEC than he faced in Conference USA. But he said he's up for the challenge.

"Honestly, I have a good feel for the ball," Koulechov said. "I trust that. Basketball IQ, I feel is so underrated in today's game. I trust that I'll always find a way."

Koulechov said his breakout shooting season at Rice was the result of playing for an experienced team that shared the basketball and got him open looks. Koulechov also showed the ability to draw contact and get to the free-throw line last season, averaging 81.9 percent on 171 trips.

"I just became, I think, a better player sophomore to junior year and I expanded my game," Koulechov said. "It wasn't just shooting. I was more of a driver, too, so that opened up a lot of opportunities."

Born in Volgograd, Russia, Koulechov moved to Israel with his family at a young age. When he was 16, he left Israel to play two seasons at Sagemont Prep School in Fort Lauderdale under coach Adam Ross.

Koulechov's parents still live in Israel and he's been back for some summers to play for Israeli amatuer national teams. The rest of his family lives in Russia.

"I thought it was the best opportunity for me to play college basketball at the highest level and move on to the next level," Koulechov said of coming to the U.S. "I'm about to get my degree so it worked out pretty well so far. I hope next year it will be even better."

Koulechov said coming back to school in Florida "felt right" after starting his college career at Arizona State and transferring to Rice. He chose the Gators over Oklahoma after visiting UF's campus last weekend and hosting an in-home visit with White and assistant coach Dusty May on Tuesday.

"I thought I had a good connection with the coaching staff," Koulechov said. "I liked them a lot. Florida is a great team, it's a great place. Always in the back of mind, I mean, I dreamed of coming back to Florida at some point after high school."

Koulechov will earn a bachelor's from Rice in sports management this spring and said he may pursue sports management studies at UF as well, but hasn't decided yet. On the court, Koulechov will likely compete with Virginia Tech transfer Jalen Hudson and incoming freshman DeAundrae Ballard for the starting small forward spot that is now open after forward Devin Robinson decided to keep his name in the NBA draft. The Gators are coming off a breakout second season under White, going 27-9 and reaching the Elite Eight for the ninth time in program history.

"I'm super excited coming to a good team, an NCAA Tournament team," Koulechov said. "Obviously there are a lot of high expectations with this team, and I'm excited to be a part of it. Hopefully I can make a big contribution."

BOSTON — Former Florida and NFL star Aaron Hernandez, who was serving a life sentence for a murder conviction and just days ago was acquitted of a double murder, died after hanging himself in his prison cell early Wednesday, Massachusetts prisons officials said.

    Facts

Rise and fall of Aaron Hernandez

Key dates in the case of Aaron Hernandez:
    - June 8, 2010: Hernandez, a standout tight end drafted from the University of Florida, signs a four-year contract with the New England Patriots.
    - Jan. 1, 2012: He sets a career best with 138 receiving yards in a win over Buffalo.
    - July 16, 2012: Two men, Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado, are shot to death in their car as they wait at a red light in Boston's South End neighborhood.
    - Aug. 27, 2012: Hernandez signs a five-year, $40 million contract with the Patriots.
    - February 2013: An associate, Alexander Bradley, is shot in the face in Florida. Bradley files a lawsuit alleging that Hernandez shot him after they argued at a strip club.
    - June 17, 2013: The body of Odin Lloyd, a semi-professional football player who was dating the sister of Hernandez's fiancee, is found about a mile from Hernandez's mansion in North Attleborough, Massachusetts.
    - June 26, 2013: Hernandez is arrested on a murder charge in Lloyd's slaying and taken from his home in handcuffs. He later pleads not guilty. The Patriots release him hours after his arrest.
    - May 15, 2014: Hernandez is indicted on two counts of first-degree murder and other charges in connection with the shootings of de Abreu and Furtado. His lawyers say he is innocent.
    - May 28, 2014: Hernandez pleads not guilty to charges in connection with the deaths of de Abreu and Furtado. A prosecutor says Hernandez was angry because de Abreu accidentally bumped into him at a nightclub while dancing, spilling his drink.
    - Jan. 9, 2015: Hernandez goes on trial for murder in Lloyd's killing.
    - April 7, 2015: Prosecutors and Hernandez's lawyers present their closing statements and the case goes to the jury.
    - April 15, 2015: Hernandez is convicted of first-degree murder; carries a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment.
    - Feb. 14, 2017: Hernandez goes on trial for murder in the 2012 killings of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado.
    - April 6, 2017: Prosecutors and Hernandez's lawyers present their closing arguments.
    - April 7, 2017: The jury begins deliberating.
    - April 14, 2017: Hernandez acquitted of murder in the 2012 killings of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado.
    - April 19, 2017: Hernandez found hanging by a bed sheet in his prison cell, dies at hospital.

Hernandez, 27, was found by guards in his cell at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley just after 3 a.m., Department of Correction spokesman Christopher Fallon said in a statement.

The former New England Patriots tight end was pronounced dead at UMass Memorial-HealthAlliance Hospital in Leominster about an hour later.

Hernandez was in a single cell in a general population housing unit in the maximum security state prison. He hanged himself using a bed sheet that he attached to a cell window, Fallon said.

Hernandez tried to block the cell door from the inside by jamming the door with various items, Fallon said.

Fallon said he's not aware of any suicide note written by Hernandez and stressed that an investigation is ongoing. He said that officials had no concern that Hernandez was planning on taking his own life, and if there was a concern about his well-being, Hernandez would have been transferred to a mental health unit.

Hernandez was moved to tears on Friday after he was acquitted of the 2012 fatal shootings of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado in Boston. Just before his acquittal, Hernandez was seen blowing kisses to the little girl he fathered with fiancee Shayanna Jenkins. Cameras captured the tender exchange.

But, Hernandez was still serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole for his conviction in the 2013 shooting of Odin Lloyd, who was dating his fiancee's sister.

Hernandez's lawyers did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Hernandez's death comes the same day the Patriots are making their visit to the White House today to mark their Super Bowl win. Team spokesman Stacey James said the Patriots were aware of the reports of Hernandez's death but didn't anticipate the club commenting Wednesday.

Massachusetts State Police remain on the scene investigating the death.

JHMO. Egbunu went from a near liability early in the year to a solid but not spectacular player in the games leading up to his injury. He's not ready by any means for the NBA.

    White visits Pitt transfer

    Monday, April 17, 2017 at 1:09

    (Gainesville SUN)

After courting Rice transfer Egor Koulechov on Friday and Saturday, Florida coach Mike White hopped on a plane Sunday to visit another grad transfer target– Pittsburgh forward Cam Johnson.

The 6-foot-8, 210-pound Johnson had visits with a number of schools over the weekend, including TCU, Michigan, South Carolina, Ole Miss, Oregon, Rutgers and Illinois.

What makes Johnson appealing? For one, Johnson shot 41.7 percent from 3-point range last season while averaging 11.3 points and 4.5 rebounds. His size and game is similar to former UF forward Devin Robinson, who announced on Friday that he's keeping his name in the NBA draft.

Johnson carries a 3.9 GPA and is on track to graduate in the spring after three years. Because Johnson red-shirted due a shoulder injury as a freshman, he's a rare grad transfer that would have two years of eligibility remaining.

With forward Eric Hester transferring and Robinson putting his name in the NBA draft, the Gators have one scholarship spot open for 2016-17. That number could increase to two scholarship spots if center John Egbunu elects to keep his name in the NBA draft. The 6-foot-11 Egbunu, coming off surgery to repair a torn ACL, has until May 24 to decide whether to return for his senior season.
