Re: [gatortalk] USC Tickets

You might want to look at getting three and two together. For instance get three seats on row 50 and two seats on row 51 or 52 in close proximity to each other and then just scoot over and sit next to each other what do you think of that idea?

Does anyone have any leads or experience how I can get 5 tickets together to the game this weekend?  Looking at the online sites, one is hard pressed to get 3 together and the websites only allow up to 4 together.  I'm guessing it's not allowed? Looking for some guidance and / or leads.

Thanks!

Re: [gatortalk] Re: [gatornews] [SUN]: Dooley Grades The Gators

I kept hoping the defense could  make some simple adjustments du the game.
But, no I was mistaken.
The onside kick didn't help my confidence in special teams, either.
But, overall the 51 points covered all the defensive sins.
On to the Fighting Muschamps next week.

Mississippi wide receiver Elijah Moore runs past Florida linebacker David Reese (4) during the second half Saturday in Oxford, Miss. No.6 Florida won 51-35.

OFFENSE A+

First half:  It looked a lot like last year minus the four wide receivers now in the NFL. Other than a 50-yard run by Kadarius Toney, Florida managed only 46 yards rushing. The Gators threw almost twice as much as they ran.

Second half: It was an amazing display by the two Kyles as they seemed to be able to get whatever they wanted even with Ole Miss employed double coverage. Florida did have some luck running the ball in the second half.

For the game: Obviously, this was a game about offense and the Gators had to have all of their weapons to win a shootout. We figured Kyle Trask would be ready for a big season, but for Florida to set the record for most yards ever in an SEC game, you have to give some credit to the much-maligned offensive line.

DEFENSE D-

First half: You saw the good and the bad in the first half. The good was that Florida has some obvious speed in its young players and that Ventrell Miller looked like you hoped he would look. The bad was that the Gators allowed 278 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Second half: Florida scored quickly to start the second half and only 36 seconds later Ole Miss had a touchdown. Matt Corral gave Florida fits all day. Fortunately for the Gators, one touchdown came back on a holding call.

For the game: This is not the Gator defense we have expected to see, well, maybe ever. The Gators allowed 613 yards and some of that is on Lane Kiffin, but Florida looked like a defense that lacked ball awareness.

SPECIAL TEAMS B+

First half: They weren't called on much, but it was a nice first punt of the year by Jacob Finn and Evan McPherson was the usual Mr. Reliable. Good kickoff coverage as well.

Second half: McPherson was money and the 55-yarder was a huge kick in the game. McPherson finished 3-for-3 on field goals and Florida did not allow anything in the kickoff return game.

For the game: While the special teams were not a huge part of the game, Florida was efficient in almost every area. But the grade comes down, because Ole Miss recovered an onside kick while the game was mathematically still in doubt.

OVERALL B-

We can give Florida a little leeway on defense, but to get this grade any higher, we would have to come up with a boatload of excuses. Florida was amazing on offense, but this was not an SEC-championship caliber defense. And it's difficult to unsee that. There is obviously a lot of work to do.

Re: [gatortalk] Re: [gatornews] [SUN]: Gator notebook: Assistants rewarded with raises after last season

This will never happen because its a Title IX lawsuit nightmare waiting to happen. It has to be equitable across all sports and all players. I don't think players should be paid. I suggest reading Saturday Millionaires by Kristi Dosh (she's a Gator too). She did a lot of research on this in her book among other things.  Athletes get a lot in return (training, meals, etc) for playing and it equates to ~250,000+ In benefits beyond the scholarship they receive. Should they receive a bigger stipend?  Yes. Flat out paid a salary as an employee? No

I have two daughters on scholarship playing lacrosse at two different schools. They both received athletic and academic scholarships and STILL don't have a full ride. What's your plan for them?? Should they get paid or is this only for major revenue generating sports?

Tell me your plan to make it equitable to ALL collegiate athletes that get up early, go to the weight room, go to classes, have practice, study hall, etc... Or is your pie in the sky plan only for sports that has an $8 million dollar a year coach?

My girls work just as hard as the football players at their schools, same challenges, similar training and weight room obligations, and school requirements, and they still have to pay to be there.  No stipend. What will you do for them?  They would love to have these football players problems... Convince me.

This is obscene given the players are still not paid (and can't even legally make money of their own likeness!)

Infuriating.

Give the players a straight 50/50 revenue split like the pro leagues and everything will be fair, finally!

Gator notebook: Assistants rewarded with raises after last season

UF and head coach Dan Mullen were able to reward his assistant coaches with pay raises.

With Florida coming off a second consecutive New Year's Six bowl win and double-digit win season, head coach Dan Mullen's assistant coaches were rewarded with raises in February.

The raises totaled $490,000, with linebackers coach Christian Robinson getting the biggest bump, his annual salary going from $115,000 to $290,000, a raise of $175,000.

Quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson, who was promoted to offensive coordinator, and defensive line coach David Turner both received $100,000 raises. Johnson will earn $540,000, and Turner $465,000 this year.

Offensive line coach and running game coordinator John Hevesy and wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator Billy Gonzales each received $30,000 raises, elevating both their annual salaries to $620,000.

Running backs coach/special teams coordinator Greg Knox is now making $485,000 a year after getting a $45,000 raise, while cornerbacks coach Torrian Gray is at $450,000 annually after receiving a $10,000 bump.

New tight ends coach and assistant head coach Tim Brewster signed a two-year contract in February that pays him $485,00 annually.

Strength and conditioning coordinator Nick Savage also received a raise of $150,000 that bumps his annual salary to $450,000.

Defensive coordinator Todd Granthan, who signed a new contract last year that pays him $1.79 million annually, and safeties coach Ron English did not receive raises. English will be making $440,000 this year.

Depth chart drama

Two prominent defensive players are conspicuous by their absence on the depth chart for Saturday's game. Starting defensive tackle Kyree Campbell and potential starting safety Brad Stewart aren't even listed on the chart that was released by UF on Monday.

But UF coach Dan Mullen said not to read too much into that.

"I didn't even look at that (depth chart)," Mullen said on Wednesday's SEC coaches teleconference. "You guys and your depth charts, man. I'll be honest, I don't even think I looked at it."

Mullen was asked if Campbell and Stewart would be available for Saturday's game in Oxford.

 "Yeah," he said.

Love for McPherson

Junior place-kicker Evan McPherson, who has made 34 of his 38 field goal attempts in his UF career, drew high praise from Mullen on Wednesday's call.

"I have unbelievable confidence in him," Mullen said. "I think he's the top kicker in college football. He has confidence in himself, in his ability to make kicks from all over the field. I've never seen a moment that's too big for him.

"If he's hot, he's still just focused on the next kick. If he struggles, he's still focused on the next kick. Nothing is too big a moment for him. He never gets two high or two low about what's going on."

Not only is McPherson accurate, he has a big leg, Mullen said.

"He's hit a 67-yarder in practice for us," he said.

Dexter killing it

No surprise here: true freshman defensive tackle Gervon Dexter, a five-star recruit, has already worked his way into the playing rotation. He'll see the field Saturday against Ole Miss.

"As we put on the pads (in camp), his physicality showed up, his ability to utilize his skill set, hold the point, play with power," defensive coordinator Todd Grantham said. "As we move through the season you always need guys up front. If you go back and look last year, we really kind of got depleted at certain times last year with injuries and things like that happen.

"Anytime you can play a lot of guys in the front, it's a good thing, and right now he's earned the right to play with his play and his practice and we'll just put him in there and let him roll."

Brewster can sell it

After being around and coached by Tim Brewster throughout preseason camp, tight end Kyle Pitts has a better understanding of why UF's new tight ends coach has a reputation for being an elite recruiter.

"I just think he's a great salesman," Pitts said. "He could sell water to a whale. He knows how to talk. I feel like he has a great way with words, so guys trust him and believe in him. He has a great history of tight ends, so he can use that to his advantage. I feel like that's why a lot of guys come to wherever he's coaching."

I was surprised to see any game not sold out. Then I saw why. Ole Miss is trying to make up for lost sales on each ticket. I can't imagine what a 50 yard line seat costs.

So, I'm looking forward to watching it here on tv.

How Ole Miss athletics has prepared to host college football games through the pandemic

OXFORD — Take a minute to think about just how unlikely this outcome was. Ole Miss senior linebacker Lakia Henry has.

"It's been a rollercoaster ride man," Henry said. "Really. For us to be here right now is unreal."

It's all led to this. Ole Miss football players have endured six months of postponements, cancelations, mask wearing, social distancing, isolation from loved ones and swabs up noses for this weekend.

SEC football returns to Oxford on Saturday.

Ole Miss hosts No. 6 Florida at 11 a.m. on Saturday in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. It will be the first SEC football game of the season, along with Kentucky versus Auburn which kicks off at the same time.

Things are going to look different. Vaught-Hemingway Stadium will be limited to 25% capacity. On-campus tailgating is forbidden, meaning The Grove and all its traditions are off limits. Fans have to wear face coverings unless they're eating or drinking. Elevators will be limited to five passengers per trip. The marching band won't be allowed to perform on the field before games or during halftime.

But that's all part of playing football during the COVID-19 pandemic. If it wasn't for these precautions, there wouldn't be a game to host.

"What we're trying to do is continue the season," Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter told the Clarion Ledger. "We don't want three or four days after the game for there to be a giant spike in Mississippi because everyone went to the Ole Miss game. We just want to make sure we're being safe and following protocols so we can continue and hopefully get through this season."

The fan experience

Tracking attendance will be a fascinating pursuit in 2020.

Per an executive order from Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves, Ole Miss can only allow 16,010 spectators into Vaught-Hemingway Stadium per game this season. As of Tuesday, Carter told the Clarion Ledger Ole Miss was still about 2,000 sales shy of hitting that new sellout number.

"Understand this is an issue that's kind of going on around the country," Carter said. "People are not selling as many as they thought they would. Hopefully we'll have a great game Saturday and interest will pop up."

Carter is right on his first assertion. Schools aren't hitting their updated capacities early in the season.

For example, Notre Dame is allowing about 15,000 fans to come to games but reported an attendance of 10,097 for its home opener against Duke. Then there's Texas, which is allowing up to 25,000 fans come to games this fall, only hosted 15,337 fans for the season opener against UTEP.

It's easy to explain this trend. Some fans just aren't ready to go to big social gatherings yet with the COVID-19 pandemic continuing to spread throughout the United States. Or, as Carter sees it, those fans just need to see a gameday experience can be safe.

"They want to see how the game's going to function and how it's going to work," Carter said. "I think if we can show a safe environment this Saturday then we'll have higher attendance for the next home games."

As of Wednesday, Ole Miss is only reporting 41 active cases of COVID-19 across its students, faculty and staff. That's down from an initial spike of more than 200 in early September when the semester began. On top of that, Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin has reported back-to-back weeks with zero positive test cases in the football program.

Carter said he's confident the campus and facilities will be safe for fans who visit Oxford this season. Most of the archived positive cases from athletics and the general student body, Carter says, happened at off-campus gatherings and parties.

Because of this, Carter said he never considered hosting games in an empty stadium or eliminating student ticketing. Students will still get around 2,500 tickets per game and approximately half of the marching band will be in the stadium, socially distanced from one another in the stands.

"Our hope is that if these cases continue to decline and things continue to get better that the governor may allow us to have a higher percentage in down the road," Carter said.

The game itself

Carter's big concern about attendance is what happens when fans enter and exit games. His aim is to avoid clusters and bottlenecks of people at gates because that's where the highest risk of congregation can happen.

Kiffin has different concerns. Football concerns. Injuries. Matchups. Schemes.

The COVID-19 pandemic adds a few more concerns onto a coach's plate. But Kiffin said things are mostly going to be same-as for his team when it comes to gameday preparations.

There are a couple small changes. To accommodate proper social distancing, Kiffin said he's trying to make sure the meeting room at the team hotel is bigger than usual. He also said the team will probably take more buses to the stadium than normal so players aren't as cramped as they'd usually be.

If players are nervous to play in this environment, it's not because of COVID.

"It's going to be butterflies as usual," Henry said. "But once that first play is over the jitters are gone and it's time to play football. There's going to be a lot of emotion in that game but we've just got to stay composed and weather the storm."

Henry said this season is about "making the best of it." He said he understands there's a world where Ole Miss doesn't get to play its 10-game schedule in full. Cancelations are always possible with the specter of the novel coronavirus looming. But just getting the chance to play is what he's missed.

Football players aren't the only people who need football back. As Carter mentioned, the Oxford economy is largely dependent on football weekends. Hotels, bars, restaurants and shops are all subject to the same COVID-19 safety protocols as the university and the rest of the state, but a busy football weekend could be a positive step towards revitalizing some of the businesses that have suffered through the pandemic.

That's one of many reasons why Carter said he's proud the SEC has made the decisions it has that allowed for this weekend to be a possibility.

"I think we've really done the right thing," Carter said. "We've made good decisions. We've waited until we had the proper information to make decisions. And I think we're seeing now that it's paying off. We waited a little bit and I think we're going to have a great opening day Saturday and it's going to be a fun year."'

Correction: An earlier version of this story inaccurately reported the stadium capacity allowed at Louisville this season. Louisville is allowing around 12,000 fans to attend games, not 18,00
