[gatortalk] FW: [gatornews] [SUN]: UF notebook: Injury to defensive lineman

Didn't Richard Gouraige play some at the end of the season? They have him listed as a redshirt freshman and as a backup.

The new rules for redshirt!

UF notebook: Injury to defensive lineman

August 21, 2019 (

By

 Robbie Andreu)

Florida defensive lineman Elijah Conliffe. [Brad McClenny/The Gainesville Sun]

It appears Florida's defensive line could have only five healthy scholarship tackles available for Saturday's opener against Miami.

Junior Elijah Conliffe, a backup, indicated on Instagram on Wednesday that he is going to miss the season with an unspecified injury. The injury has not been confirmed by UF.

If Conliffe is out, the Gators will be down to five available tackles for Saturday's game — Tyree Campbell, Adam Shuler, Luke Ancrum,Tedarrell Slaton and Marlon Dunlap. True freshman Jaelin Humphries is still recovering from an unspecified leg injury.

The Gators could get help inside from two ends who have also been working at tackle in certain situations — Jabari Zuniga and Zachary Carter.

Young guy help

At least two of the young offensive linemen appear ready to dive into the playing rotation if needed — redshirt freshman tackle Richard Gouraige and true freshman guard Evan White.

"(Gouraige) works hard and he takes everything super serious," junior guard Brett Heggie said. "He is all business when he is inside the building. That's the biggest thing with him, and keep getting better every day. I was just talking to him after practice about it. He is just one of those guys that is going to be a big name for us soon or in the future because of how hard he works."

Another veteran lineman, senior center Nick Buchanan, singled out White.

"Ethan White is probably one of the smartest guys that we have," Buchanan said. "You tell him one thing once and he's got it, which is a testament to his mindset, not only on the field but off the field, with his body. Every day he comes out here with a mindset and is ready to work. It's all about reps. He's learning, he's working, he's getting better every single day, so shout out to him."

Storm warning

Tight end Lucas Krull and the Gators have their own version of Hurricane preparation.

"Oh yeah, we're fired up," he said. "I keep telling everybody I see, 'You see me now, it's the calm, but the storm's coming.' We're ready."

Lots of focus

Mullen has a game plan for how he wants this week to play out on the practice field.

"I want to make sure that we are completely prepared for Saturday night," he said. "And that we are prepared to execute at an extremely high level in all three phases of the game, and that we play with relentless effort, we play with maximum effort come Saturday night.

"Those are the things. To do that, you have to prepare, you have to know exactly what you're doing, put in the extra time and be extremely confident with every aspect of the game plan when you go take that field on Saturday."

Defensive tackle Kyree Campbell said the players know what's expected of them this week.

"Our big emphasis is we practice Monday hard, we practice Tuesday hard, practice Wednesday hard, practice Thursday hard, we win the game," Campbell said. "You practice the way you're going to play. So, if we come out here and practice the right way, we plan to win the game. If we come out here and BS, we're going to lose the game."

Talking Gators

The 2019 edition of Gator Talk continues Thursday at Miller's Ale House in Celebration Pointe in Gainesville with football coach Dan Mullen and volleyball coach Mary Wise.

Mullen will recap fall camp and discuss the Gators season opener from 7-7:30 p.m., while Wise will discuss her volleyball team ahead of UF's Fan Day on Saturday. The hour-long show can be heard on 103.7-FM.

It's going to carry over through next (Labor Day) weekend.  The Miami game was supposed to be on the 31st anyway, but ESPN threw some coin, threw some jack, at UF and UM and convinced them to move it.

Alonso breaks NL rookie home run record

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Pete Alonso wasn't even sure he was going to make the New York Mets' opening day roster, so even he never could have imagined the incredible season he's having.

The burly first baseman hit his 40th home run to break the National League rookie record, capping a late outburst by the New York Mets in their 11-5 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday.

"This season's been unbelievable," said Alonso, the former standout at the University of Florida. "It's been a dream come true so far and I just want to keep building off of it and keep trying to help this team win."

Michael Conforto hit a long homer in the first inning and drove in four runs. Amed Rosario put the Mets ahead 6-4 with a two-run single in the seventh, and Alonso went deep in the ninth.

Alonso quickly fell behind 0-2 in the count, but when Royals pitcher Jacob Barnes threw a high fastball, he didn't miss.

"I was just trying to hit the ball hard like I have been," Alonso said. "Take good, quality swings at good pitches and, thankfully, he gave me a fastball up in the zone, which I like to swing at."

The result was a no-doubt shot over the bullpen in left field that snapped a tie with Cody Bellinger, who hit 39 home runs for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2017 on the way to winning Rookie of the Year honors.

"It was a pretty grand one," New York manager Mickey Callaway said. "It went a long way, it seemed like."

Next up for the 24-year-old Alonso is the Mets season record of 41 home runs set by Todd Hundley in 1996 and equaled by Carlos Beltran a decade later.

"That's even more mind-boggling," Alonso said. "I'm just really grateful. Grateful and thankful and happy that I've had this opportunity."

New York, in the middle of a crowded NL wild-card race thanks to its second-half surge, completed a 3-3 road trip and improved to 24-10 since the All-Star break.

Alonso also had an RBI double and scored three times during his second consecutive three-hit game. Rosario had three hits and three RBIs in the leadoff spot, and Joe Panik added three hits as the top four batters in the Mets' lineup combined to go 11 for 18 with nine RBIs and seven runs.

"When we're locked in and try to put good at-bats together and hit the ball hard and not try to do too much, I mean, we can be really dangerous," Alonso said. "Today we showed that."

[gatortalk] Pick'em?

John and Oz, are we gonna have some Pick'em fun this year?

Thanks in advance!

Re: [gatortalk] US Gymnastic Championships

Me too!  I wondered why we were trying so difficult a rutine on the beam this year.

The short and sweet version is that a routine in Elite (say, bars) gets a maximum difficulty applied to it based on the elements of the routine, with a handful of elements being required for each bars routine.  You'll see on bars in Elite a ton more release moves, for example. Elements are rated from A (easy) to J (only the Biles triple-double on floor is rated a J) and there's a max number of points based on how hard they are.  If a gymnast completes all those elements, then there are deductions taken for flaws in execution, which resuts in a final score.  In Elite, any score in the 14+ range is super-good.  (It probably means you started at 15+ and only had about 1 to 1 1/2 points' worth of deductions, so you had a hard routine and did it fairly well.)

In the NCAA, there are a number of required elements for each apparatus, but a routine can be super hard (Rachel Gowey & Alyssa Baumann are two with very difficult elements on beam) or meet the required elements.  The most you can get with required elements is a 10.  So there is no "bonus" for doing really hard elements.  In fact, it can work against you because NCAA is more about consistency than difficulty.  They've tried to change that up a bit recently by making a very common vault a 9.95 max score (since almost everyone was acing it), which is now encouraging harder vaults with a 10 start.

If you saw Saturday's coverage, you might have seen Trinity Thomas' floor routine.  This was much different than her NCAA routine, not just because of some added requirements (they all have to do some kind of pirouette routine) and more leaps/less dance, but you probably saw that first tumbling pass where she attempted a different element called the Biles (not the triple-double) and rotated short.  She does not do a tumble element quite that difficult in NCAA.  Because there's no reward; a fall on a single element penalizes you more in NCAA than Elite.

This is why you'll see more falls and errors in Elite and less inconsistency in NCAA (among the better teams).  It's better to be "perfect" in NCAA.  I think that's why NCAA looks prettier to the more casual observer.

In Elite, they typically do not compete as often (or in such a short time frame) as NCAA.  But when they do compete, their routines are going to take longer and have more exhausting elements.

Re: [gatortalk] US Gymnastic Championships

Thanks, Helen - I'm not an expert because a gymnerd would give you all the nuance.  It's kind of a simple overview of why they seem so different.  Since I watch more NCAA than Elite, when I do watch Elite it's always funny to me when a gymnast has a hop on their vault landing.  The commentator will say something like "Oh, what a great vault!" and I'll still sit there thinking "But she didn't stick the landing!"

We had an opportunity to have short Q & As with Jenny Rowland and her assistants.  I asked Adrian Burde if they really had to convince gymnasts to drop elements they were used to doing or if they were immediately receptive to simplifying their routines.  He said usually in the beginning when they first get to campus it's a struggle, but then they'll warm up to it when they realize to themselves "Oh - I can get a 10 just doing THAT?"

I HOPE SO... I get so aggravated that they sit there and wait for the damn D to get set  all like.. "OK we're ready to go now.. you can snap the damn ball."

Need for speed: Now well-versed in Mullen's system, Gators focused on going up-tempo

Florida wide receiver Van Jefferson scores a touchdown against Florida State in Tallahassee last November. The Gators' offense did quick work on the 38-yard score. [File]

Florida's overhaul of the strength and conditioning program has been well-documented, and the mission statement — become faster, more physical and more aggressive — is well known.

Yet just how that translates to UF's play in 2019 remains to be seen; although there has been no shortage of speculation inside the program.

When the Gators open the season in 10 days in Orlando against Miami, Florida's pass catchers expect the offense will operate noticeably quicker than it did merely a season ago.

"We're going to blow it up this year. The offense is way different than last year, way different. Everybody is just being used around, spread apart. It's going to be way different. Faster, everything," redshirt freshman tight end Dante Lang said.

That admission may come as a breath of fresh air for Florida fans who are disgruntled with having one of the SEC's slower offenses.

The Gators ranked No. 91 among NCAA Division I teams in plays per game last season, good for eighth in the conference. Throughout preseason camp, Florida's offense has been installing multiple no-huddle packages designed to catch the opposition off-guard.

"We don't operate any differently, it's just different pace," quarterback Kyle Trask said. "We have packages where we're supposed to go extra fast, eyes to the sideline as soon as you can. Whatever the call is, run it, try to catch the defense off balance."

Much of Florida's stagnation on offense could be attributed to Dan Mullen's offensive reboot after arriving back in Gainesville. Each and every student-athlete, even transfers familiar with the rigors of the SEC, had to essentially start fresh.

"I think coming in, first year we didn't have an idea of the offense. But now, second year under Coach Mullen, I think everybody has a good idea of it, so just coming out, it's just about executing now and getting the plays down and getting it fast, the tempo," Van Jefferson, who transferred to the program from Ole Miss prior to the commencement of the 2018 season, said. "Now that everybody has had a year of the offense, I think we're going to be fine."

It seemingly didn't even take a year, however. By November, signs the team had grown more knowledgeable were apparent.

Over Florida's final three games, the Gators averaged 77 plays on offense — up from UF's season average of 69.1 plays per game. The results weren't surprising: UF's offense averaged 36.7 points per game in the final three contests, compared to 27.5 points a game in the team's first nine regular season games.

Suffice to say, with the inaugural season in the books, Florida sees the benefit in increasing the tempo on the offensive end in Mullen's second year. Now the task becomes implementing it Aug. 24.

"We're trying to score faster. Score faster and get on the field and get off, convert more third downs," senior wide receiver Tyrie Cleveland said. "Just have a complete offense and play together fast."

RE: [gatortalk] US Gymnastic Championships

I know very little about gymnastics. But, I'd say there are two different audiences between NBC Sports and the SEC Channel.

One audience is looking for the hottest flip/hand stand/balance. The other wants to see their favorite gymnasts from their schools.

I've been kind of spoiled by the SEC Network's gymnastics coverage in which there is almost non-stop action. NBC seems to want to focus on a just a few athletes and not even acknowledge the existence of others. I guess they are ramping up to the Olympics and want to start focusing on the ones they believe will be there. It's all about the star power, I guess.

I'm aware that the level of difficulty is greater for these type competitions than the collegiate ones (announcers mentioned that elite gymnasts do 3 times more gymnastics), but there were times where I was not very impressed. It was mostly the uneven bars, where most routines were sloppy when it came to the handstands. Is this just my lack of gymnastics knowledge showing?

[gatortalk] Miami

Has named Jarren Williams as its starting quarterback.
I think there might be a problem there.

Re: [gatortalk] US Gymnastic Championships

It figures the only time they showed Thomas was last night when she struggled on floor - a routine she did nearly flawlessly Friday night.

She did make the US National Team though.

Just an FYI:  Morgan Hurd and Riley McCusker are UF commits - they've deferred their NLI for next year because they both are hoping to be on the Olympic team.  You might have noticed that Jenny Rowland and Owen Fields, who were there to coach Trinity, stayed carefully far away from Hurd & McCusker, because I think any contact would be a recruiting violation.

Anyone watching NBCSN broadcast? It's very frustrating because Trinity Thomas is the immediate predecessor of Simone Biles on each apparatus. They would rather show Biles standing around getting ready than show Thomas actually doing the apparatus. Arghhh!!!
