[gatortalk] FW: [gatornews] [SUN]: Our road streak ends - "HOOPS SCOOP"

I don't guess there's a flight from Jacksonville to Jackson MS, is there?  On Southwest?

That would still include a drive to Starkville through the piney woods of Mississippi.

Hoops Scoop

Our road streak ends

Thursday, January 30, 2014 at 7:08

by Kevin Brockway     (Gainesville SUN)

When you pick up the Gainesville Sun on Friday, or click on Gatorsports.com late tonight, you will notice my byline won't be on the story.

For 10 years, I've chased connecting planes, driven through ice storms and re-booked flights to cover Gator road basketball games. But despite my best efforts over a two-day period, I was unable to secure a flight that would get me to Starkville, Miss., in time for tonight's 7 p.m. ET (6 p.m. CT) tip between Florida and Mississippi State.

It's disappointing for sure, but all good streaks come to an end. It's the first road game I can recall missing in 10 years due to travel reasons. In January of 2011, I nearly missed a Florida-Tennessee game due to an ice storm in Atlanta. But with my flight from Gainesville to Knoxville, Tenn., canceled, I was able to secure a flight from Orlando to Atlanta early on a Tuesday morning, then drive from Atlanta to Knoxville in time for the 7 p.m. tipoff. Slip-sliding up icy I-75, it took me about two hours to get from Atlanta and Kennesaw, Ga., but the roads cleared up as I reached the Tennessee border.

This time, the ice storms and subsequent flight cancellations over a three-day period at Atlanta-Hartsfield Airport were too big of an obstacle to overcome. More than 7,100 flights have been canceled since Monday due to the Southeast winter storms, the majority of which were Delta flights.

When the weather is bad in Atlanta, and you fly Delta, you prepare for the worst. I checked weather.com earlier in the week and felt assured that the storm would pass by Tuesday and flying conditions would be OK by Wednesday and Thursday to reach my destination. What I didn't account for was Atlanta's terrible urban planning which resulted in gridlocked roads due to highways not being adequately sanded. Countless Delta employees were stranded, which resulted in flight cancellations.

Still, I thought I had a shot because I was flying out of a major metropolitan airport (Jacksonville). But on Wednesday, I was told there were no flights available to Birmingham, Ala. (a two-and-a-half hour drive from Starkville) and Memphis (a three-hour drive to Starkville) on Delta.

I stayed in Jacksonville on Wednesday night and was re-booked on an early Thursday morning Delta flight, in hopes of still making it to the game on time. But there were more cancellations. The earliest Delta flight would have gotten me to the Atlanta-Hartsfield at noon. The earliest connection from Atlanta to Columbus, Miss., would have landed at 7:45 p.m., well past the 6 p.m. CT tip.

I tried other carriers, but Southwest, U.S. Airways, American and United had no cost-effective routes that would have gotten me to Columbus, Miss., Memphis or Birmingham, Ala., in a timely enough fashion to make tonight's tip.

To give readers a perspective on travel, we don't fly with the team charter, because it would create a conflict of interest with the team that we cover. I book my flights commercially well in advance and try to shop for fares under $400 (which the paper reimburses, my travel expenses are covered). It's trickier to get good fares for mid-week games. Delta provides the most efficient routes throughout the Southeast, provided there are no Atlanta weather issues. I also fly U.S. Airways on occasion. There were no cheap fares from Gainesville to Columbus, Miss., both regional airports, which is why I booked out of Jacksonville. But I tend to book out of Gainesville first, then Jacksonville, then Orlando and then Tampa as a last resort.

So please accept a personal apology for not being able to provide the road coverage that you are accustomed to tonight. I'll be at home watching the game on ESPN2 like the rest of you, live-tweeting during the game. I'll provide a beyond the arc analysis postgame. Thankfully, there's a three-game homestand coming up, which will include freshman forward Chris Walker's long-anticipated debut Tuesday night against Missouri. Then, I'll be back on the road again Feb. 11 at Tennessee. And hopefully, it will be another 10 years or longer before the Sun is unable to cover a road game due to travel reasons.

Florida freshman Chris Walker cleared to play after suspension

Given his potential, Chris Walker could be a future lottery pick. (USATSI)Given his potential, Chris Walker could be a future lottery pick. (USATSI)

Florida freshman Chris Walker has been cleared by the NCAA and will suit up for the Gators next Tuesday, sources confirmed to CBSSports.com.

Walker has not played in a game yet for the Gators, missing the first semester due to academics and then sitting out since then while the NCAA reviewed his eligibility. He has been able to practice, but was not able to play in games.

Walker will end up sitting 12 games, according to a statement from the NCAA. The statement said that Walker received benefits from two agents and three other people. He will donate $270 -- the money received from agents -- to a charity and serve 80 hours of community service.

"According to the facts of the case, which were agreed upon by the university and NCAA staff, when Walker was a prospect, he accepted free cell phones and service, airfare, lodging, meals and apparel. Additionally, individuals close to Walker received free airfare and lodging for nine different trips, including eight associated with Walker's non-scholastic basketball team competitions."

Walker is a 6-foot-10 power forward from Holmes County (Fla.). He was ranked No. 7 in the 247Sports Composite for the Class of 2013. Walker's ceiling is what makes him so intriguing. He is long and extremely athletic, and runs the floor. Walker is also a very good rebounder and shot-blocker.

Florida plays Mississippi State on Thursday and Texas A&M on Saturday, but Missouri comes to town on February 4. That will be Walker's first game.

The Gators have done fine without Walker thus far, winners of 11 in a row and currently sitting at 17-2 overall, 6-0 in the SEC. They were already a Final Four favorite, but the addition of Walker makes the Gators even stronger come March. He will provide an excellent option off the bench for head coach Billy Donovan, given his mobility and motor. Casey Prather, Patric Young, Dorian Finney-Smith and Will Yeguete have shouldered the load up front so far, with Prather emerging as an SEC Player of the Year candidate.

Walker won't have to be a dominant performer this season for Florida; there are enough options up front where he can be eased into his role. But getting a player with Walker's talent and athleticism at this point in this season is always a boost.

The story was first reported by ESPN.com.

RE: [gatortalk] FW: [gatornews] A contest for you pick /em geniuses

Let’s say you just picked one team to win and then determined every possible combination of that team winning.

For example if you thought UF would win the tournament, how many possible combinations are there for that to happen.

Regardless of the number you probably couldn’t submit that many entries..

One could trim that number down a bit by omitting any seeds lower than 11 from the Final Four and any seed lower than 8 from winning it all. That would still include every result in the history of the tournament.

From a wagering standpoint, eliminating any teams seeded 5th or below from the Final Four would seem to pick up about 90% of the actual Final Fours and help trim the number down further.

RE: [gatortalk] FW: [gatornews] A contest for you pick /em geniuses

The problem is that you have a team like the Coastal team from Florida last year that just busts everything up.  While you are absolutely correct in predicting the winner, the lower seeds do upset the brackets.

RE: [gatortalk] FW: [gatornews] A contest for you pick /em geniuses

Wouldn’t it be newsworthy if someone picked the first 62 games correctly, meaning they got it right up to the final game….only to lose it with a buzzer beater….

A billion $$$ is a lot money even if it’s paid out over a number of years.

Predicting all the games in the NCAA tournament correctly has never been done in any contest I've heard of.

I'm not a math whiz but it would be interesting to see how many combinations exist if you only included the top 2 or 3 seeds in each region and entered all of them.

You would stand a real chance to win I don't remember the last time someone outside of a top 3 seed won the entire tournament…but I'm sure that it's not possible to have that many entries.

I think UF was  a #3 and #1 seed their 2 years…..

Win $1 Billion Backed By Buffett By Guessing NCAA Basketball Winners

JANUARY 21, 2014 • BLOOMBERG NEWS

Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc. is backing a $1 billion prize offered by Quicken Loans Inc. if a contestant predicts the winner of each game in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's men's basketball tournament.

The prize will be paid in 40 annual installments of $25 million and split among multiple winners if there is more than one perfect entrant, the Detroit-based lender said today in a statement distributed by PR Newswire. The winner also has the option of a single payment of $500 million.

Berkshire has specialized in unusual insurance risks for decades, protecting clients against big losses in return for premium payments. The Omaha, Nebraska-based company won a bet in 2010 on the World Cup after France was eliminated from the tournament in South Africa. Berkshire has previously guaranteed against the potential payout of $1 billion in a contest sponsored by PepsiCo Inc.

"We've seen a lot of contests offering a million dollars for putting together a good bracket, which got us thinking, what is the perfect bracket worth?" Quicken Loans Chief Marketing Officer Jay Farner said in the statement. "We decided a billion dollars seems right for such an impressive feat."

The 68-team team tournament begins in March. Submissions will be limited to one per household and capped at 10 million entrants, according to the statement.

RE: [gatortalk] Another tail from the recruiting trail

How's our crew team looking this year?

Yeah...Gator Baseball starts in a couple of weeks.  The Gators are competitive in so many sports that we really do have to specify which sport we are talking about.

My daughter's best friend's oldest brother has been offered a preferred walk-on status at UF.  While that is not a hot recruiting get-- he is quite good and has some other offers from smaller schools, he did get to spend some time with both Muschamp recently and with Cam Cameron from LSU after they won the state championship.  Seems Mr. Cameron is doing quite a bit of negative recruiting.  He told Nate that he doesn't want to go to Florida because the coaching staff may change next year.  No surprise there, but they have also only offered him a preferred walk-on status, so they are negative recruiting a walk on?  What must they be doing with the 4 and 5 star recruits?

I told his father that it was kind of ironic that Cam Cameron is negative recruiting about someone losing a job.  That man has has four different jobs in the last 7 years!

Oh, I also coached Nate in the 7th and 8th grade!  He is a dual legacy at Notre Dame, but they have only offered preferred walk-on as well.  I am hoping he becomes a Gator!
