No. 13-ranked Brianna Morgan's opponent, No. 16 Caroline Doyle, double faulted on match point and handed No. 2 Florida its 138th consecutive win at home, a 4-3 victory over No. 10-ranked and previously undefeated Stanford on Sunday afternoon at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex.
It all came down to two heated battles on singles courts No. 2 and No. 3. No. 3-ranked Josie Kuhlman led Stanford's No. 14 Taylor Davidson in a third set tiebreak on Court 2, 5-0, but Davidson wouldn't go away. The Stanford sophomore won three straight points, allowed one from Kuhlman, then took four in a row to go up, 7-6, in the tiebreak.
Kuhlman knotted the tiebreak at 7-all, and the two traded points back and forth before Davidson tallied two-straight to take the match, 2-6, 6-0, 7-6 (8).
Belinda Woolcock, Kourtney Keegan and Peggy Porter also picked up singles wins for the Gators who host Alabama on Friday.
Women's basketball: At College Station, Texas, UF's Ronni Williams and Haley Lorenzen combined for 24 points in a 66-46 loss at No. 15 Texas A&M at Reed Arena Sunday afternoon.
The Aggies (21-6, 9-4 SEC) used two significant runs during the first half — the first a 12-2 spree to start the game, and then a 7-0 run that ended the half and helped the Aggies build a 31-21 halftime lead.
Florida (12-14, 4-9) rallied with two runs of its own — a mini 6-0 spurt with four points from January Miller that nearly countered TAMU's initial run.
The Gators ten scored seven consecutive points in the latter part of the frame and were within three points, 24-21, with 4:29 remaining. Carla Batchelor scored four points during the march.
The Gators travel to Alabama on Thursday at 7 p.m.
Women's golf: The Gators opened competition at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate in New Orleans, La., on Sunday. Three Gators fought into the top-20 during Round 1, with sophomores Karolina Vlckova, Maria Torres and Kelly Grassel tying for 19th after each carding a +2 (74).
As a team, Florida finished the first round in seventh place, recording a team total of +9 (297). The 15-team field features seven of Golfweek's top-25 teams, with LSU (284) emerging on top after day one, leading the field by seven strokes at the 6,189-yard English Turn Golf Club.
Today's second round starts at 9 a.m.
