A dozen top-10 finishes in national championship action - including a pair NCAA titles - led the Florida athletics program to its second consecutive second-place finish in the 2012-13 Learfield Sports Directors' Cup. The finish matches Florida's highest ever in the annual all-sports rankings and marks Florida's fifth consecutive top-four finish in the rankings. Two NCAA titles highlighted Florida's finishes, as seven teams placed among the nation's top five.

Along with the national championship the Gators won several individual titles, Bridget Sloan won an individual championship as well as won beam, while Alaina Johnson won the uneven bars.

Facts

2012-13 Learfield Sports Directors' Cup Standings
Rank, School, Total*
1. Stanford: 1261.25
2. FLORIDA: 1244.75
3. UCLA: 1227.25
4. Michigan: 1138.25
5. Texas A&M: 1131.50
6. Penn State: 1100.00
7. Oklahoma: 1078.25
8. UNC: 1075.33
9. Notre Dame: 1015.50
10. Georgia: 1006.75
Florida is the only program to finish among the nation's top 10 in each of the last 30 national all-sports standings. The Gator program also was second in 2011-12 and 2009-10 and tied for second in 1997-98.
The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup, presented annually by the nation's athletics directors, recognizes the schools with the best overall sports performances in an academic year. Points are awarded based on finishes and participation in 20 NCAA Division I sports. Stanford received its 19th consecutive Directors' Cup at the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) convention earlier this month. UCLA was third followed by Michigan.
The 16.5 point margin between first and second is the closest in the 21-year history of the Directors' Cup.
Florida's 12 top-10 national team finishes in 2012-13 equals the third-highest in school history, as at least 10 Gator teams have turned in top-10 finishes in each of the last 12 seasons. The program's record of 14 top-10 finishes came in 2009-10.
Gymnastics and men's outdoor track & field claimed NCAA titles in 2013. Florida became the fifth program to win a NCAA team title at the national championship held in April in Los Angeles. The Gator men's track & field claimed a share of its second consecutive NCAA Outdoor title with three event wins on the final day- triple jump, 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays.
The complete list of Florida's 2012-13 top-10 teams includes:
- Gymnastics (No. 1)
- Men's Outdoor Track & Field (No. T-1)
- Men's Indoor Track & Field (No. 2)
- Women's Tennis (No. T-3)
- Men's Basketball (No. T-5)
- Lacrosse (No. T-5)
- Softball (No. T-5)
- Men's Swimming & Diving (No. 6)
- Women's Swimming & Diving (No. 6)
- Soccer (No. T-9)
- Volleyball (No. T-9)
- Football (No. 9 AP)
"What a season for the Gators. There was so much to celebrate right from the beginning of the fall all the way through the final competition of the spring. It was certainly fun to see the Gator gymnasts raise their first NCAA title trophy and the men's outdoor track & field team claim their second-straight championship," Florida Athletics Director Jeremy Foley said. "To finish second in the Directors' Cup requires many Gator teams to advance and perform well in NCAA Championship action. We certainly appreciate and applaud the effort shown by our student-athletes and coaches as they compete among the nation's best."
In Southeastern Conference action, Florida equaled the record with eight league crowns in 2012-13 action (men's basketball, women's cross country, gymnastics, soccer, softball, men's swimming & diving, women's tennis and volleyball). UF has now has a total of 213 SEC titles since the league began in 1932 and 116 of those SEC titles have come under Foley's watch. In addition, the lacrosse team won its third consecutive American Lacrosse Conference title in just the program's fourth year. Florida swept the Halifx Media Group Southeastern Conference All-Sports Titles for the 13th time in 2012-13.
Individually, 16 Gators claimed a total of 10 NCAA individual titles in 2013. Junior Eddie Lovett won the 60-meter hurdles and sophomore Marquis Dendy took the indoor long jump title. At the NCAA Outdoor meet, three event titles went to the Gators on the meet's final day. Senior Omar Craddock claimed his second consecutive NCAA triple jump title. Antwan Wright, Hugh Graham, Jr., Leonardo Seymore and Dedrick Dukes won the 4x100-meter relay title. The team title was sealed with Florida's 4x400-meter win by Najee Glass, Graham, Jr., Dukes and Arman Hall.
Junior Elizabeth Beisel, a two-time Olympic medalist at the 2012 Games, took the 400 individual medley win at the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships. The quartet of Pawel Werner, Sebastien Rousseau, Marcin Cieslak and Dan Wallace combined to win Florida's second NCAA 800 free relay title of the last three years. At the NCAA Gymnastics Championships, freshman Bridget Sloan took both the all-around and balance beam titles. Junior teammate Alaina Johnson became the first Gator to claim the NCAA uneven bars crown with her win.
Florida was also successful away from the athletic arena in 2012-13. A total of three UF student-athletes earned Capital One Academic All-America honors and Beisel was named the 2012 Capital One At-Large Academic All-American of the Year. Of the top 10 programs in the 2012-13 Learfield Sports Director's Cup Standings, Florida is one of seven to post a NCAA Graduation Success Rate of 82 percent or higher in 2012.
Gators by the Numbers
- 2 NCAA team titles (gymnastics and men's outdoor track & field) marks the fourth consecutive season of multiple team titles for the Gator program.
- 12 top-10 national finishes by 2012-13 teams.
- 9 conference titles by the Gators in 2012-13, including 8 Southeastern Conference wins (equals league record).
- 10 Gators picked up conference player of the year/athlete of the year awards
- 4 Gators named Capital One Academic All-Americans, including one Academic All-American of the Year.
- 82 percent Graduation Success Rate for UF, as reported last fall in 2012 NCAA Federal Graduation Rate Data. Of the top 10 programs in the 2012-13 Learfield Sports Director's Cup Standings, Florida is one of seven to post a GSR of 82 percent or higher in 2012. All Gator teams are in good academic standing in latest Academic Progress Report released earlier this month by the NCAA.
- $73.9 million contributed since 1990 by the UAA to UF to fund academic endeavors, including $6.4 million in 2012-13.
- More than 1 million fans attended 176 home events in 2012-13. Five UF teams ranked among the nation's top 10 in attendance.
- 324 student-athletes participated in 2,864 hours of community service in 2012-13, partnering with 24 local schools, four civic organizations and 27 non-profit organizations.

Because I'm going to write about snowballs.
Ah, you feel better already, right?
After so many years of watching and covering the sport, I've seen a lot of snowballs. And I know this — there are some coming again this year.
The real talent of a coaching staff is to manage the snowballs. Some you have to find a way to slow down and eventually melt. With others, you want to keep adding snow as they wipe out everything in their paths.
Last year was a perfect example of snowballs. And despite the heat outside that will intrude into the football season, I think snowballs are more plentiful in Southern football.
Coaches talk all the time about not letting one loss become two. But sometimes they become 10. Or more.
Take Southern Miss last year. Please. The Golden Eagles were returning 11 starters from a team that won 12 games the year before. Southern Miss had a new coach in Ellis Johnson and a tough schedule.
Two elements for a possible snowball.
And it rolled right through Hattiesburg.
The Golden Eagles went 0-12. They were hurt by injuries, but 0-12? Johnson was cut loose after one season. The snowball won.
Look at Tennessee last season. Does anybody think that Tennessee had enough talent to win more than one SEC game last year? Of course.
Remember when Florida went to Knoxville and the Vols were all lathered up for the big game? Instead, the Gators put the Tennessee season in the freezer. They started a snowball, and it gathered negative momentum throughout the season.
The same thing happened at Auburn. And Arkansas. The snowball is difficult to stop when it gains momentum.
That's when you need a coach with a door jamb or a leader on the field who won't allow the snowball to pass.
Snowballs go both ways.
Some teams get them going in the right direction, and they win a bunch of games and they start believing they are better than they are. Last year's Florida team was a perfect example. The Gators started to believe they would find a way to win and overachieved their way to 11 wins.
Same deal with Urban Meyer's Ohio State team. That was not 12-0 talent, but Meyer and his staff got the snowball rolling in the right direction.
Momentum is an unsung part of a college football season. It's such an obvious factor within games, but its importance in a season is overlooked.
The snowballs usually don't affect the elite and the downtrodden. But they can.
Usually, the really good teams are going to end up within a win or two from where they are projected. And the really bad teams won't be able to generate enough momentum to become bowl eligible.
But there are cases like 2000 Alabama. The Tide were coming off an SEC title and talking national championship in the preseason. But a Crimson snowball fueled by a dysfunctional coaching staff turned into a chilly 3-8 season.
That same season, Bob Stoops was in his second year as Oklahoma's coach. He got the snowball going in the right direction, winning 13 straight games and a national title after a seven-win season the year before. Also in 2000, Lou Holtz won eight games at South Carolina after winning zero the year before.
There are a lot of factors that play into bad momentum. Negative energy in a fan base can freeze any efforts by a coach to turn things around. Injuries are almost always part of it. Chemistry isn't there. And can a team get a break?
The opposite is true for positive momentum. You stay healthy, you get every replay call, your fans stay up, you have a good locker room.
All we know for sure is that snowballs are coming again this season. Right now, they sound like a cool break from the heat. But only if they're going up the hill.

C'yontai Lewis making headlines

by Zach Abolverdi           (Gainesville SUN)

Florida tight end commit C'yontai Lewis has been a regular in the news over the past few days.

Prior to competing in last weekend's IMG Academy national championship tournament, Lewis stopped by UF on Friday with his 7-on-7 team, which included his cousin and Alabama running back commit Bo Scarbrough.
It was Lewis' second visit to Gainesville in less than a week after camping at Florida on June 15. He enjoyed seeing the UF staff again, especially tight ends coach and primary recruiter Derek Lewis.
"Coach D-Lew makes me feel like I'm his son, all of the coaches do," Lewis said. "I'm never met a coaching staff that made me feel that way. They wanted me to go to IMG and show out for them. So that's what I went and did."
Lewis was named one of the top offensive performers by Rivals.com following the event. Southeast recruiting analyst Kynon Codrington wrote this about the 6-foot-6, 211-pounder.
"Lewis is a big target with a wide catch radius. He needs to add weight to stay at tight end when he arrives at the next level. At this stage, he is a jumbo wideout who uses his body well to shield off defenders. If he can continue to develop his frame and polish his route-running, he has a chance to be a solid pass-catching tight end in college."
The recognition meant a lot to Lewis, who is an unranked, two-star prospect on Rivals and has a three-star rating on all other recruiting sites.
"It was a great experience," he said. "That was my first time doing something like that. I had never been to any camps before I went to Florida's, so I haven't been able to get noticed. So knowing people thought I performed that well makes me good about myself."
Lewis' performance, however, wasn't what drew the most attention at IMG. Following one of his touchdown receptions, he gave former Florida and Auburn quarterback Cam Newton the Gator Chomp. The Carolina Panthers signal-caller was reportedly not amused and told the guy next to him that Lewis was "so disrespectful."
The UF commit said the celebration was his response to trash talk that he heard from Newton and his father, Cecil.
"Before the tournament, Cam's dad kept on saying his son's team was going to beat us," Lewis said. "When (Cam) was watching our game, he laughed when we did something wrong. So when I caught the pass and scored, I saw him at the back of the end zone and just chomped him up.
"I thought he would have been cool with it, but he took it the wrong way. I was just doing it have fun. I wasn't trying to make him mad. When I was in middle school and he played for Auburn, he used to be my favorite player. But it's whatever. He's Gator bait now."
Lewis plans to return to Florida with Scarbrough for Friday Night Lights on July 26. He'll also spend the summer trying to find a new school.
On Tuesday, the Alabama High School Athletic Association ruled Lewis ineligible because he didn't make a "bona fide move" when he transferred from Greene County to Northridge in 2012 and then from Northridge to Tuscaloosa County earlier this month.
He now has to attend a private school and is leaning toward Tuscaloosa Academy.
"They won the state championship last year, so I'll probably go there," Lewis said. "I'll definitely be playing football my senior year."

What a tragic waste of two lives. Whatever your upbringing, you'd think that getting to live your dream -- playing in the NFL and making millions of dollars -- would be sufficient for anyone to understand how lucky they are and to be content just to live a great life. Obviously, that's not true, but I really don't understand why it's not enough.

Capital punishment in Connecticut formerly existed as an available sanction for a criminal defendant upon conviction for the commission of a capital offense. Since the 1976 United States Supreme Court decision in Gregg v. Georgia until Connecticut repealed capital punishment in 2012, Connecticut executed one individual, although the law allows executions to proceed for those still on death row and convicted under the previous law.

Death row inmates are placed in the Connecticut Department of Correction system. The state's death row for men currently houses ten male inmates, who are incarcerated at Northern Correctional Institution in the town of Somers. The method of execution currently utilized is lethal injection. As in any other state, people who are under 18 at the time of commission of the capital crime[1] or mentally retarded[2] are constitutionally precluded from being executed.
