ORLANDO — Florida's Sam Riffice won the NCAA Men's Singles National Championship on Friday at the USTA National Campus.

No. 6-seeded Riffice defeated No. 2-seeded Daniel Rodrigues of South Carolina, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 to earn the third singles title in program history. Previously, Mark Merklein (1994) and Jeff Morrison (1999) earned the singles trophy for the Gators.

The junior is the eighth player in the 21st century to earn a team and singles national championship in the same season, as UF defeated Baylor last Saturday for the team title.

Riffice completes his season with a 32-7 overall record in singles and also downed the No. 1 and No. 2-seeded players in consecutive days for the title.

[gatortalk] [SUN]: Gainesville Super Regional: No. 4 Gators get rematch with rival UGA

Gainesville Super Regional: No. 4 Gators get rematch with rival UGA

Zach Abolverdi
Gator Sports
Florida's Charla Echols is one of the players to watch this weekend against Georgia in the NCAA Gainesville Super Regional at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium.

For the sixth consecutive year, Florida's softball team will play an SEC opponent in the Super Regional round of the NCAA Tournament.

The No. 4 Gators (45-9) face a familiar foe this weekend in rival Georgia (32-21) after winning the regular season series, 2-1, at UGA in early April.

UF will host the Bulldogs at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium on Friday at 5 p.m. on ESPNU and Saturday at 12 p.m. on ESPN. If necessary, a third game will be played Sunday at 12 p.m. on ESPN.

Georgia swept the Athens Regional with two victories against No. 13 Duke and a win over Western Kentucky. Florida also advanced with a sweep in the Gainesville Regional, shutting out South Florida (twice) and South Alabama with a combined score of 19-0 and outhitting the two teams 28-3.

"We're excited to play another week," Gators coach Tim Walton said. "I think the key for us is just our athletes have done a really good job of embracing the preparation it takes for them to be good hitters. I think they've shown that."

After giving up no hits last Friday vs. USF, Florida pitcher Elizabeth Hightower (17-5) threw her first career no-hitter Sunday and a career-high 10 strikeouts. Katie Chronister earned her 10th win of the year in the regional opener and Saturday starter Natalie Lugo (17-2) matched her season high with 11 strikeouts against South Alabama.

"The whole entire pitching staff did a great job," Walton said. "Not to give up a run and give up the fewest hits that they've given up, they were fantastic and credit to them."

Players to watch for UGA include pitcher Mary Avant Wilson and offensive leaders Lacey Fincher (15), Sydney Kuma (14) and Sydney Chambley (10), all of whom have double-digit home runs.

Hightower's second loss of the season came in the opener at Georgia. UF outscored the Bulldogs 28-2 in the next two games to take the series, including the largest margin of victory (17-1) in the rivalry's history.

The Gators hold an all-time record of 42-28 against UGA and 18-15 when playing at home. Florida swept the Bulldogs in their last trip to Gainesville in 2017.

The two teams have only met four times in the NCAA Tournament. The Gators run-ruled Georgia 11-3 (5) in their most recent meeting at the 2018 Women's College World Series. The Bulldogs eliminated the Gators in the 2016 Super Regionals in Gainesville, going 2-0.

Super Regional winners advance to the WCWS starting June 3 in Oklahoma City, Ok.

Re: [gatortalk] Re: [gatornews] [SUN]: Florida routs Mississippi State to advance at SEC tourney

That would be nice. But I think Pat Dooley is right in his Back/Front Nine articles, this team is who they are and there is no switch to turn on. Even though they beat MSU handily, routine ground balls in the infield and bunts where an adventure with several misplays. It didn't cost them any runs yesterday but it did raise the pitch count. Fortunately, they only had to play 7 innings. In a close game, it could be costly as it has been throughout the season. Hopefully, they play well today and get Friday off.

GoGators!!!

Florida pitcher Hunter Barco limited Mississippi State to four hits Wednesday, as the Gators rolled to a 13-1 win in seven innings at the SEC Baseball Tournament in the Hoover Met in Hoover, Alabama.

HOOVER, Ala. — Not many knew what to expect when Florida took the field against third seed Mississippi State on Wednesday morning in the second round of the SEC Baseball Tournament.

The sixth-seeded Gators squeaked past 11th-seeded Kentucky 4-1 Tuesday to face the third-seeded Bulldogs for the first time in 2021.

What the fans at Hoover Met. Stadium and the ones watching at home witnessed was an ambush, as UF demolished MSU 13-1 in a seven-inning run-rule game to advance to the third round.

The Gators (37-19), ranked No. 13 in the nation, will play 10 seed Alabama (31-22) at 5:30 p.m. ET Thursday. The Crimson Tide defeated two seed Tennessee 3-2 in 11 innings later Wednesday.

The Bulldogs (40-14) handed the ball to relief pitcher Brandon Smith (4-3), and almost immediately, found himself in some trouble. The Gators loaded the bases with no outs, but only managed one run on a wild pitch which scored left fielder Jacob Young, who had opened the game with a double.

Florida coach Kevin O'Sullivan stayed with his rotation, going with big lefty Hunter Barco, who attempted to recover from his loss to Arkansas over the weekend, his first in nearly two months.

Barco (10-2) allowed a run in the bottom of the first after a double and two-out single, but mowed down Mississippi State the rest of the way. He relinquished just two more hits the next six innings, both singles.

"My mentality was just to pound the zone," Barco said. "In the first inning, they did a really good job of hitting. I could tell what they wanted to hit it the other way, so I tried to bust them in."

Offensively, O'Sullivan made a crucial lineup change, moving Nathan Hickey to third and putting Kris Armstrong at DH. The move paid dividends, as Armstrong batted 3-4 with four RBI, two apiece in the second and third.

"Not having Kris in the lineup yesterday, I felt like there was a huge hole in the middle," O'Sullivan said. "With Mac (Guscette) coming back to catch, we were able to move Hickey to third and make it work."

Florida tallied eight runs combined in the second and third frames before it whacked in four in the top of the seventh, putting the nail in the coffin. Thompson's double highlighted the seventh.

Besides Armstrong, Young drove in three runs on a 2-for-4 outing and Sterlin Thompson also drove in three with two hits, including his fifth home run of the season.

"I think it was probably our most-complete game that we played in a while, obviously," O'Sullivan said. "We got production from everybody up and down the lineup. I thought we played pretty good defense for the most part. Hunter Barco was outstanding against a really good lineup.

"We kind of got on a roll early, and some guys were feeling really good about their swings. I'm just really pleased with how we played the last two days because obviously, it could have went one of two directions after the weekend at Arkansas."

Mississippi State, which is ranked No. 8 nationally, falls to the losers' bracket for a 10:30 a.m. ET game Thursday against Tennessee (42-15).

Note: Hickey started at third base in place of slumping Kirby McMullen (4-for-29, .138).

Re: [gatortalk] Re: [gatornews] [SUN]: Florida turns attention toward baseball postseason

Pitching and defense were well below expectations. Sometimes it was almost comical watching them make errors like a little league team. No lead was safe during the last 3-4 innings. And while hitting was pretty good, they struck out a lot.

Florida turns attention toward baseball postseason

Special to Gatorsports.com

Ok, so Florida ended the baseball regular season on a four-game losing streak, including being swept by top-ranked Arkansas in a three-game series in Fayetteville.

Time to turn the page for the Gators (35-19, 17-13 SEC) to the postseason. The Gators dropped from No. 9 to No. 13 in the latest D1Baseball Top 25 rankings.

"Yeah, we talked about that at the end of the game," UF coach Kevin O'Sullivan said after Saturday's 9-3 loss to the Razorbacks. "Bottom line is as difficult as this weekend was, we have to move on. The postseason starts Tuesday and we'll have a good practice on Monday and get ready to play on Tuesday."

The postseason begins at the SEC Baseball Tournament in Hoover, Ala. The Gators received the No. 6 seed and will take on 11th-seeded Kentucky (29-22) at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the single-elimination round of the 12-team tourney. Florida won the series at Kentucky earlier this month, 2-1.

The winner plays three-seed Mississippi State (40-13), which is ranked No. 8 nationally, at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday when the tourney turns into the double-elimination portion. The first five of the six days of the tourney will be covered by the SEC Network.

The Gators hope the results in Hoover produce a top eight national seed for the NCAA Tournament, whose field will be announced May 31. The final 16 regional sites, of which Florida Ballpark is a candidate, will be announced May 30.
