Re: [gatortalk] W Basketball

I believe that concludes a very successful regular season at 22-7.
Amanda Butler who I thought was going to be let go after last season has
done well.

Subject: [gatornews] [SUN]: Humphrey surprised by SEC honor

Just nine years removed from his college career and one year removed from his pro career, former Florida guard Lee Humphrey wasn't expecting this kind of honor this quickly.

But late last week, Humphrey was named Florida's representative for this year's SEC Legends of Basketball Class. The 6-foot-2 shooting guard from Maryville, Tenn., arguably UF's best pure shooter in school history, was a key cog in Florida's back-to-back national title teams in 2006 and 2007. He still holds the record for most 3-pointers made in the NCAA Tournament with 47. He'll be recognized next month at the SEC Tournament in Nahsville, Tenn., when Florida plays.

"Highly unexpected, but pleasantly surprised," Humphrey said. "I'm looking forward to the trip."

Humphrey's 288 career 3-pointers at Florida ranks second all-time (behind Kenny Boynton's 333) and his 113 3-pointers in 2005-06 and 2006-07 were the most by  a Gator player in a season before Michael Frazier II made 118 3-pointers in 2013-14.

After college, Humphrey played overseas in Poland, Germany and Lithuania and had a brief stint in the NBDL as well. He retired last season and now lives in Jacksonville, where he works in a management training program with Pontoon Solutions.

Humphrey, who will turn 32 in April, said it's still hard to believe that it's been 10 years since Florida won the first of its two back-to-back national titles. No college basketball team has won back-to-back national championships since the Gators won it all in 2006 and 2007. The starting frontline on those UF title teams remains in the NBA, with Al Horford a four-time All-Star with the Atlanta Hawks, Joakim Noah on the Chicago Bulls and Corey Brewer on the Houston Rockets. Noah suffered a season-ending shoulder injury last month.

"I think it shows to first, how much talent we had on that team and just the closeness we had on that team that everyone wanted to stay together and give it one more run," Humphrey said. "Fortunately, we were able to get it both years."

Gators expecting close encounters against Gamecocks

By Kevin Brockway
Gainesville SUN Staff writer
Friday, February 19, 2016 10:08 PM

There are different ways to measure toughness on the basketball court.

From a physical standpoint, Florida will need to be at its toughest Saturday when it takes on South Carolina in the second of back-to-back road games.

South Carolina plays a bare-knuckles brand of basketball. The Gamecocks rank first in the SEC and eighth in the nation in offensive rebounds (14.3 per game), first in the SEC in rebounding margin (plus-7.7) and first in the SEC in turnovers forced (15.3).

South Carolina drives the ball to the basket and draws fouls. The Gamecocks are getting to the free-throw line 29.5 times per game, which ranks second nationally behind Howard University.

"I don't know if we can match it, but the effort will be to try to hold it in the road, to try not to be too out-physicalled," Florida coach Mike White said. "The rebounding margin can't be lopsided. The fight within the game can't be lopsided, that's obviously what they pride themselves on and we do, too."

White said the Gamecocks are in the "99th percentile" of college basketball in terms of the level of physicality in which they play. The first-year Florida coach credited the job South Carolina coach Frank Martin has done in turning the program around. After finishing 17-16 last season and tied for 11th in the SEC, South Carolina enters Saturday's matchup with Florida 21-5 and in position for its first NCAA Tournament berth in 12 years.

"Frank's done an unbelievable job in rebuilding that program and I respect the way that they play and how hard they play." White said. "What probably will be the biggest factor in the game in the first five minutes is doing what we can to play as hard as we possibly can, and again, to do our best to try to hold that physicality in the road."

And yet, South Carolina will be coming into the matchup with a tinge of desperation following back-to-back losses to the SEC's best team (Kentucky at home) and SEC's worst team (Missouri on the road).

"It's gonna be a high intensity game," Florida senior forward Dorian Finney-Smith said. "They play hard, they always play us hard. We know it's gonna be a battle, so (we need to) just try to go in there knowing that we gotta raise our intensity level."

Finney-Smith said the key for the Gators will be getting off to a good start. South Carolina is expecting a sellout Saturday and the crowd could become a factor if the Gators fall behind early.

"We went on the road against Kentucky, they hopped on us quick," Finney-Smith said. "We can't allow them to get up on us quick early in the game … we're gonna have to face a lot of adversity, we just gotta get through it together."

Florida showed it could handle adversity on the road, rallying from down seven points in the second half to win at Georgia 57-53 on Tuesday. It was UF's best defensive effort since falling 58-52 at Michigan State in a hard-fought game last December. Sophomore center John Egbunu had five blocked shots for the Gators against Georgia, the most for a Gator player in an SEC road game in the past 20 years. The 6-foot-11, 249-pound Egbunu is one of UF's most physical players, but will need to avoid foul trouble, which has been an issue.

"He's a more consistent defender right now than he was a couple months ago, hands down," White said of Egbunu. "Is he where you want to see him? Has he maxed out as a defender? Absolutely not. And he understands that."

White said Egbunu needs to stay engaged on the defensive end of the floor regardless of how his game is going offensively.

"A lot of players are like this, especially bigs, when the ball goes in for you a little bit, you tend to play a little bit harder and you tend to do the dirty work at a higher level," White said. "Early second half (against Georgia), when he got himself going, all of a sudden he becomes the best defender on the floor for a little while. That's something that he can at least attempt to control from the tip whether he's scoring or not. That'll continue to be the challenge to him."

Gators expecting close encounters against Gamecocks

By Kevin Brockway
Gainesville SUN Staff writer

I found it. It's on Watch ESPN online.
Softball is on too. Up 5-2 in bottom half of the 4th.

Baseball is up 1-0 bottom half of the 1st.
