Just a few thoughts on recruiting:

It is very difficult to evaluate talent at the high school level. First, the player may not have played against very good competition. Second, the player may have been outstanding at the high school level because the game was slower and may not be able to adapt to the speed of the college game. Third, the player may not have played the position he will play in college. (For example, we recruited a Juco cornerback who did not play the position until late in the season this past year. He may well be a future superstar.) Finally, the player may have been in a "system" that does not match up with the system he will be playing in college.
It is difficult to tell how an athlete might respond to the kind of coaching he might receive in college. Spurrier's genius was how he worked with his Qbs. Some responded well to him and some did not. Danny and Kerwin both seemed to have over achieved.
It is difficult to tell how the player might adjust to the college experience. Cam Newton was an incredibly talented athlete. He did not adjust to coaching and he did not adjust to the college lifestyle in his freshman and sophomore years.
Recruiting to needs is critical. Florida has suffered tremendously the past few years because we have not had the right coaches and players on offense. Clearly we had the talent before last year but did not have the right coaching. (Look at the success of our Qbs that transferred away.) This past year we may have had the right coaches but we were left with not having the right QB. Time will tell if we were able to correct the mismatch of talent and coaching.
Florida's inept offensive last year hurt our recruiting on both offense and defense. As great as our defense was, it was not great enough to stay on the field with the numerous three and outs experienced by the offense and the poor field position given up by the offense. Consequently, our defense did not look near as good as it probably was. Imagine what our defense would have looked like if we would have had an offense like SOS had for so many years. As a result of our offense last year, it is much more difficult to recruit superstar players on both sides of the ball. Let's face it. If we had a big defensive talent child who was choosing between Florida and Alabama, where would we guide them to go if we wanted to have them have a great career? The good news is that things can change quickly on offense the next two years. This will help recruiting on both sides of the ball.

Because of the above, rating a class is at best a crap shoot. Four years from now, we may be looking back at this class as the beginning of a dynasty or the return to the mediocracy that Florida had experienced prior to SOS (or Charley Pell if you are wiling to give him credit.)

I believe this staff can recruit too.

We're pretty lucky the SEC East is doing so poorly right now. That should help us continue to win the east.

Wins will add up to recruiting.

Clemson not only recruits Florida heavily; they recruit against UF.

Muschamp didn't help us against Clemson, but I think Mac will. And…. I think when we get to the championship game, we will do better with our recruits than Dabo Swinney does.

To be meaningful, this data should exclude IMG students. I suspect that UF will have grabbed about the same non-IMG Florida top-50 as the other top schools.

I was curious so I took a non-exhaustive look for 2015-2016. I included UF, FSU, Miami, Clemson (because they always seem to recruit Florida well), and Auburn (because they appeared on the list a lot while I was researching). I used the 247sports top 50 list.

In 2015, the only IMG recruit to sign with any of the above teams was Deondre Francois with FSU.

In 2016, Shavar Manuel signed with FSU and Rashaun Smith signed with Clemson.

Total for the two years (not removing any non-qualifiers like D'anfernee McGriff)

UF 10

FSU 17

Miami 14

Clemson 6

Auburn 9

So, in state, the IMG effect did not really produce that much of a difference. FSU cleaned up last year, and Miami cleaned up this year. We recruited better than an out-of-state school, but not nearly as well as a school the stature of Florida should have.

I believe this staff can coach. They just need to go out and get the players.
