Well we replaced the 62nd best recruiter according to 247.com (Callahan) with the 87th best (Gray). Probably not a real fair comparison though at it might be easier to recruit top flight central Florida guys to UF than it was to Vatech.

I know there is concern that UF didn't "clean up" in state, but many recruiting services and others have stated this was a down year for talent in Florida.

You can't really say Miami cleaned up when their overall ranking is 8 spots lower than UF, so it's hard to say all that Florida talent the Canes brought in is better than UF's non-Floridian talent.

All that being said, you might find this statistical research a fan did regarding blue chip recruits and prediction of success (or lack thereof) interesting:

Last year wasn't much better for McElwain, who was hired just two months before signing day 2015. The Gators signed five of the state's top 50 recruits in 2015 compared to Florida State's 10 and Miami's three.

I think that it is important to consider the IMG effect.

To be meaningful, this data should exclude IMG students. I suspect that UF will have grabbed about the same non-IMG Florida top-50 as the other top schools.

I was curious so I took a non-exhaustive look for 2015-2016.  I included UF, FSU, Miami, Clemson (because they always seem to recruit Florida well), and Auburn (because they appeared on the list a lot while I was researching).  I used the 247sports top 50 list.

In 2015, the only IMG recruit to sign with any of the above teams was Deondre Francois with FSU.

In 2016, Shavar Manuel signed with FSU and Rashaun Smith signed with Clemson.

Total for the two years (not removing any non-qualifiers like D'anfernee McGriff)
UF 10
FSU 17
Miami 14
Clemson 6
Auburn 9

So, in state, the IMG effect did not really produce that much of a difference.  FSU cleaned up last year, and Miami cleaned up this year.  We recruited better than an out-of-state school, but not nearly as well as a school the stature of Florida should have.

I believe this staff can coach.  They just need to go out and get the players.
