Allen guides Gators to win over Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. — Florida kept defending through its shooting woes Tuesday night against Georgia.

Then, freshman guard KeVaughn Allen heated up just in time.

Allen hit UF's go-ahead 3-pointer with 3:25 remaining, and Florida stiffened down the stretch for a 57-53 win over Georgia at Stegeman Coliseum.

Allen's 3-pointer put Florida up 50-47, and a dunk from center John Egbunu off a dish from point guard Kasey Hill put Florida up 52-47 with 2:01 left.

But Georgia guard Kenny Gaines hit a miracle 3-pointer that bounced off the iron, five feet in the air, and landed back through the basket that cut UF's lead to 52-50. Sophomore point guard Chris Chiozza made two free throws to put Florida up 54-50, but Gaines again hit another 3 to cut Florida's lead to 54-53 with 24.8 seconds left.

Senior forward Dorian Finney-Smith followed with two clutch free throws to put Florida back up 56-53, and Gaines failed to come through a third time, missing a deep 3-point attempt with four seconds remaining. Allen made one of two free throws to close out the game.

Allen led the Gators with 19 points, with Egbunu adding 10 points. The 6-foot-2 guard from North Little Rock, Ark. scored 14 points in the second half.

"The first half, I really couldn't find a rhythm, to get my shot," Allen said. "But in the second half I think I really had found it."

Egbunu said Allen's big shots helped fuel the team on the defensive end.

"It's amazing," Egbunu said. "I tell him all the time I'm really happy for him. He takes big shots, he takes really tough ones, and he still hits. So that's really good. We're happy for him and we're all rooting him. He hit some really big shots down the stretch that gave us the boost we needed."

Florida (17-9, 8-5 SEC) overcame shooting 36.4 percent from the field and 20 percent from 3-point range (5-25) by holding Georgia (14-10, 7-6 SEC) to just 32.3 percent from the floor. 

"That's the way it should be," Florida coach Mike White said. "That's how you should play. You can't rely on seeing the basket go through the net for you to play hard. We've done it a few times this year."

Florida picked up its third road win of the season and bounced back from a 61-55 home loss to Alabama on Saturday. It's a good start to back-to-back games on the road that concludes Saturday at South Carolina, which lost to Missouri earlier Tuesday night. 

"To win anywhere on the road is difficult, especially coming off a really tough emotional loss, on a quick turn, it seemed like we played Alabama just yesterday," White said. "Hopefully it will give us confidence. Hopefully it will show our guys what we're capable of."

Florida trailed by as many as seven points in the second half, but rallied behind Allen, who made a pair of 3-pointers during an 8-0 run that put Florida up 34-33.

The Gators led 41-38 on a driving layup by sophomore forward Devin Robinson, but Georgia answered by getting to the foul line. First, Egbunu was whistled for his third foul, which led to two free throws by Yante Maten to cut UF's lead to 41-40. Then Robinson was caught in the air and landed on Georgia guard Charles Mann as he fired up a 3-point attempt. Mann made two of three free throws to put Georgia up 42-41.

Florida tweaked its starting lineup, going with Hill over Chiozza at point guard and Justin Leon at small forward instead of Robinson.

Leon and Hill combined to score UF's first six points and teamed up on a steal to give the Gators an early 6-3. But Florida then dropped into its funk of missed 3-point attempts.

Florida missed its first nine 3-point attempts before Allen made a 3-pointer on an inbounds play to tie the score at 18. But Florida would close the half missing its next seven 3-point attempts to go 1 of 17 from 3-point range in the first half.

The Gators couldn't establish much inside because Egbunu again got in foul trouble. Egbunu picked up his second foul at the 7:19 mark in the first half and played just eight first-half minutes.

Like Florida, Georgia struggled from the field in the first half. But the Bulldogs outscored the Gators 15-4 in second-chance points, and shot 40 percent from 3-point range (4-10), the key to taking a 25-19 halftime lead.

The Bulldogs closed the half with a 7-1 run. Maten hit a 3-pointer to put the Bulldogs up 21-18, then freshman Derek Ogbeide followed with an inside hook shot to put Georgia up 23-18.

After Leon made one of two free throws for the Gators, Frazier made a baseline jumper with 32 seconds left to put Georgia up 25-19 at halftime.

It was UF's lowest scoring first half since trailing 30-19 at the half Jan. 26. But White was encouraged the Gators had only three turnovers in the first half. The Gators finished the game with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 10 to 6.

"The message was with our guys, we're doing a lot of really good things," White said. "If we can just make a couple of shots. But if we let up defensively, Georgia's gonna score 70 and I'm afraid we're not going to be capable of doing that."

FREE THROWS: Florida improved to 3-6 on the road this season. … Florida announced Tuesday that its game Feb. 27 at LSU will tip at 8:30 p.m. and air on ESPN.
