[gatortalk] Gainesville Sun to offer subscriptions for its online content

If we need to pay, I will be glad to help out.  I am in Gainesville for a few days and I read the hardcopy Gainesville Sun this morning and then I read what Shane sent via email; I actually got more out of Shane's articles than I did from the hardcopy.

Thanks, Shane!  Go Gators!

I TOTALLY agree, Rob. I’m so sick and tired of thin skinned people who get offended every time they engage in conversation with someone. I know some people who I just don’t talk to because I already know I’m going to irritate them, so why bother? Whatever happened to open-minded discussion?

I was just thinking that. We have become a hyper-sensitive society about things that don't matter, while becoming increasingly insensitive to things that do. Who cares if a coach or university president takes a jab at the competition? We say we're a country that thrives on competition, but then we complain about anyone who has even the slightest bit of fun with it.

SANDESTIN — Ohio State president Gordon Gee and Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany have apologized to SEC commissioner Mike Slive for some negative remarks Gee made about the SEC in December that became public Thursday.

“(Gee) called me a week or so ago and said he'd said some things they he wanted to apologize for,” Slive said Thursday. “I didn't know what they were. He didn't say what they were. He said they might come out and he just wanted (me) to know that he was very apologetic and very sorry for what he said.

“Then subsequently I got a call from Jim the other day. I don't think Jim, at that point, knew what the remarks were. But he made it abundantly clear that he has great respect for the Southeastern Conference, enjoys the competition and that Gordon Gee was not speaking for him and the Big Ten.

“He apologized on behalf of himself and on behalf of the Big Ten conference.”

According to public records obtained by the Associated Press, during a meeting of Ohio State's Athletic Counsel last December, Gee questioned the SEC's academic integrity. Gee was asked how to respond to SEC fans who say the Big Ten can't count because it now has 14 members.

"You tell the SEC when they can learn to read and write, then they can figure out what we're doing," Gee responded.

Slive was asked if he accepted Gee's apology.

“Our focus is on the SEC,” Slive said. “Our goal is to make us better and we've been very successful and we're comfortable here. There really isn't much more to add to that.”

I will not be paying a subscription for this.  If this happens on June 3rd, you'll need to find someone who's a subscriber to post the Gainesville Sun articles every day.  If it's paid for content, does the list need to seek permission to continue posting?

Thanks,

Sun to offer subscriptions for its online content

Published: Saturday, May 25, 2013 at 7:09 p.m.

Since 1879, The Gainesville Sun has provided our readers with the most complete local news report available. No one covers our dynamic and diverse community like we do.

Throughout its history, The Sun has been focused on delivering all the local news that matters in addition to providing you with important state, national and international stories.

That hasn't changed. In fact, we've continued to expand our coverage, even while some media outlets are cutting back. We have the largest news-gathering force in North Central Florida and are blessed with a top-notch team of award-winning reporters and editors who cover our community day-in and day-out. With a Pulitzer-winning pedigree, already this year The Sun has won national, regional and state awards, including three top prizes from the Society of Professional Journalists.

We believe that a strong, vibrant local media outlet is an essential building block in a solid and thriving community. In a way then, your subscription to The Sun is a demonstration of your belief in our community.

In order to enhance our ability to provide the credible, comprehensive and in-depth coverage you have come to expect, we will be introducing subscriptions to our digital products starting on June 3.

For many of you, this won't mean any change. If you're a seven-day or four-day home-delivery subscriber of The Sun, you will continue to have access to our suite of digital products at no additional charge. That's right. Your seven-day or four-day home-delivery subscription has already been upgraded automatically. All you'll need to do is register and you will have complete access to gaineville.com and our e-edition, a digital replica of the day's printed newspaper. You can preregister today at http://subscribe.gainesville.com.

Otherwise, you will continue to be able to view up to five stories on gainesville.com each month. After the fifth story, you will be offered the opportunity to join one of our subscription plans that include digital access. You can add digital access to your Saturday-Sunday or Sunday-only subscription for an additional $4.95 per month. Or you can choose an all-digital plan for $9.95 a month.

Under any of these plans with digital access, you will be able to enjoy Sun content across all your digital devices. Re: [gatortalk] Re: [gatornews] [SUN]: Ohio State president Gee apologizes to SEC Again....

"(Gee) called me a week or so ago and said he'd said some things they he wanted to apologize for," Slive said Thursday. "I didn't know what they were. He didn't say what they were. He said they might come out and he just wanted (me) to know that he was very apologetic and very sorry for what he said.

"Then subsequently I got a call from Jim the other day. I don't think Jim, at that point, knew what the remarks were. But he made it abundantly clear that he has great respect for the Southeastern Conference, enjoys the competition and that Gordon Gee was not speaking for him and the Big Ten.

"He apologized on behalf of himself and on behalf of the Big Ten conference."

"Our focus is on the SEC," Slive said. "Our goal is to make us better and we've been very successful and we're comfortable here. There really isn't much more to add to that."

Bridgestone Arena in Nashville appears to be the likely future primary site for the SEC men's basketball tournament.

Although nothing is official yet, it's apparent that Nashville is going to be the "primary" site for the SEC basketball tournament.

The tournament, which is in Atlanta next season, is already scheduled for Nashville in 2015 and 2016. With no openings in Nashville in 2017 and 2018, the SEC is exploring other temporary sites for those years — Tampa, Atlanta and St. Louis.

After 2018, the tournament will be in Nashville most of the time.

Olympics in Billy's future?

Former SEC basketball coach and Kentucky athletic director C.M. Newton paid quite a compliment to Florida's Billy Donovan at the SEC Spring Meetings, saying Donovan would make an excellent U.S. Olympic coach.

"Certainly I would be really, really honored," Donovan said. "If one day that opportunity presented itself, I think that would be a great honor."

Donovan has experience working with USA Basketball.

In February, it was announced that Donovan will be the head coach for the 2013 USA Men's U19 World Championship team in June. A year ago, he helped the U.S. U18 team win the gold medal. He also served as a court coach for the 2011 U19 World Championship team training camp.

Donovan will be coaching one of his own players with the U19 team. Sophomore guard Michael Frazier II recently accepted an invitation to try out for the team.

"I think Mike, for a freshman, had a good year for us," Donovan said. "Having a

chance to try out against a bunch of guys his age that are high-level players in that competitive environment for a few days (will help him).
