RE: [gatortalk] WOMEN'S TENNIS

I stand corrected. If that is the case, they certainly did have an advantage. A significant one at that.

Hmm - now I wonder if Stanford may have had an advantage.  They're in Palo Alto, if I recall, so that means they'd feel the Pacific winds more often than not.  The SF Bay Area is pretty breezy.  I realize nestled there, it's not like getting buffeted as if they were straight off the bay, but I guarantee you they're training in far more windy conditions than UF is.

I think it probably affected them equally. If you were UM or some other coastal school that has a strong seabreeze---read WIND, you would have an advantage. At UF there were no wind screens that I remember. In south Florida they were the norm and, even with them, the ball would drift a couple of feet during the service toss. You had to learn to hit the ball on the way up or right at the peak while serving or you would get all messed up!

It was ridiculously windy during the match vs. Stanford.  I wondered about its effect, but not knowing any of the finer points of tennis, I'm not sure if that affects UF's game more than Stanford's?

Cold and windy conditions do not make for good tennis. I was an assistant teaching pro at a country club whilst in high school and have plenty of experience. Wind wreaks havoc in serves and overheads and the cold gives you dead balls.

Ah...  Could this have been the problem?  Too cold?

WOMEN'S TENNIS: At Urbana, Ill., Florida's Lauren Embree and Sofie Oyen defeated Stanford's Stacey Tan and Ellen Tsay 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 in the first round of the NCAA Doubles Championships held at the at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex at the Atkins Tennis Center on a cold and windy afternoon.

“I think we played well,” Embree said. “Sofie played great. The weather conditions were again pretty tough. It was very windy and cold so you just had to try and make balls and stay mentally tough out there.”

Embree and Oyen advance to the round of 16 where they face Alabama's No. 7-ranked Aleza Guarachi and Mary Anne Macfarlane today.

During the regular season dual match, Embree teamed with freshman Brianna Morgan against Guarachi and Macfarlane and dropped a tough 9-8 (9) eight-game pro-set decision.
