[gatortalk] Re: [gatornews] For The List Manager: Gainesville Sun to offer subscriptions for its online content

Unfortunately (for us) virtually all newspapers with online content have gone to a paid subscription model in past few months. I don't know how long this will last but I suspect it's the last gasp for many newspapers around the country if they don't make this work.

I will not be paying a subscription for this.  If this happens on June 3rd, you'll need to find someone who's a subscriber to post the Gainesville Sun articles every day.  If it's paid for content, does the list need to seek permission to continue posting?

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER

Sun to offer subscriptions for its online content

Since 1879, The Gainesville Sun has provided our readers with the most complete local news report available. No one covers our dynamic and diverse community like we do.

Throughout its history, The Sun has been focused on delivering all the local news that matters in addition to providing you with important state, national and international stories.

That hasn't changed. In fact, we've continued to expand our coverage, even while some media outlets are cutting back. We have the largest news-gathering force in North Central Florida and are blessed with a top-notch team of award-winning reporters and editors who cover our community day-in and day-out. With a Pulitzer-winning pedigree, already this year The Sun has won national, regional and state awards, including three top prizes from the Society of Professional Journalists.

We believe that a strong, vibrant local media outlet is an essential building block in a solid and thriving community. In a way then, your subscription to The Sun is a demonstration of your belief in our community.

In order to enhance our ability to provide the credible, comprehensive and in-depth coverage you have come to expect, we will be introducing subscriptions to our digital products starting on June 3.

For many of you, this won't mean any change. If you're a seven-day or four-day home-delivery subscriber of The Sun, you will continue to have access to our suite of digital products at no additional charge. That's right. Your seven-day or four-day home-delivery subscription has already been upgraded automatically. All you'll need to do is register and you will have complete access to gaineville.com and our e-edition, a digital replica of the day's printed newspaper. You can preregister today at http://subscribe.gainesville.com.

Otherwise, you will continue to be able to view up to five stories on gainesville.com each month. After the fifth story, you will be offered the opportunity to join one of our subscription plans that include digital access. You can add digital access to your Saturday-Sunday or Sunday-only subscription for an additional $4.95 per month. Or you can choose an all-digital plan for $9.95 a month.

Under any of these plans with digital access, you will be able to enjoy Sun content across all your digital devices. So, for just about 33 cents a day, you get the full local news, business, features, editorial and sports package you've come to enjoy, and you will help us continue to provide the quality content our community needs and expects.

Whether in print or online, we will deliver your news anywhere, anytime and on any platform.

Thank you for being a dedicated reader as we all work together to make sure North Central Florida continues to be an exceptional place to live, work and play.
