DJ 2ND UPDATE: Patriots' Hernandez Arrested on Unspecified Charges; Team Releases Him

Aaron Hernandez, a star tight end for the New England Patriots, was arrested
Wednesday amid an investigation into the murder of a 27-year-old man whose body
was found last week not far from Mr. Hernandez's Massachusetts home,
authorities said.

Massachusetts State Police spokesman Thomas Murphy confirmed Mr. Hernandez,
23 years old, had been arrested but couldn't say what the charge was. Mr.
Hernandez's attorney, Michael Fee, has said he wouldn't comment on a continuing
investigation. Mr. Fee couldn't be reached for immediate comment after the
arrest.

Mr. Murphy referred questions to the Bristol County district attorney's
office. District Attorney C. Samuel Sutter is expected to speak after Mr.
Hernandez's arraignment later Wednesday, the office said.

The arrest came more than a week after the body of Odin Lloyd, a
semiprofessional football player from Boston, was found June 17 in an
industrial park close to Mr. Hernandez's North Attleboro home, police said.
Investigators have searched Mr. Hernandez's home.

The Patriots released Hernandez shortly after the arrest.

"Words cannot express the disappointment we feel knowing that one of our
players was arrested as a result of this investigation," the National Football
League team said. "At this time, we believe this transaction is simply the
right thing to do."

Mr. Lloyd's uncle, Ishmael Andrew, said relatives last saw Mr. Lloyd the
night before his body was discovered. Mr. Lloyd had known Mr. Hernandez for
about two years, and he was dating the sister of Mr. Hernandez's girlfriend,
Mr. Andrew said last week outside the family home in the Boston neighborhood of
Dorchester.

Relatives said they believed Mr. Lloyd and Mr. Hernandez were together
because of texts Mr. Lloyd sent his sister and media reports.

Over the past three seasons, Mr. Hernandez emerged as one of the team's top
performers. He caught a touchdown pass in the Super Bowl in 2012, racked up
1,956 yards in three seasons and became known as one of the best at his
position in the NFL.

His life off the field, however, has been more rocky. His father died
unexpectedly in 2006 from complications after routine hernia surgery. Mr.
Hernandez, who was in high school in Bristol, Conn., at the time, has described
the loss as devastating.

A civil lawsuit filed in Florida last week accused Mr. Hernandez of shooting
a Connecticut man in Palm Beach in February after they argued outside a Miami
strip club. The lawsuit says Alexander Bradley lost his right eye in the
incident. Mr. Bradley is recuperating in Connecticut, said his lawyer, David
Jaroslawicz, and couldn't be reached for comment. It couldn't be determined if
Mr. Hernandez had retained a lawyer in the civil case.

A Feb. 13 Palm Beach County police report reviewed by The Wall Street Journal
said Mr. Bradley didn't know who shot him and was "uncooperative" with
investigators. Teri Barbera, a spokesman for the Palm Beach County Sheriff's
office, said the victim was told that he was waiving his right to prosecute by
being uncooperative, and Mr. Bradley said he understood. Mr. Jaroslawicz said
Friday that he hadn't seen the police report. "When you're shot and left for
dead, it's a little hard to cooperate," he said.

Multiple NFL personnel executives have said that Mr. Hernandez, who played at
the University of Florida, had the talent to be a high first-round pick in
2010, but teams had concerns about his character. Two teams rejected Mr.
Hernandez as a potential pick because of worries over his behavior and
associates, said people with direct knowledge of the matter.

The Patriots eventually took him in the fourth round with the 113th overall
pick. Mr. Hernandez signed a five-year contract extension worth up to $40
million last year, and after the birth of his daughter, said he was a changed
man.
