RE: [gatortalk] Re: [gatornews] [SUN]: 2/22 - Notebook: Horford not a fan of Martin's showboating

Nor is there anything wrong with Horford calling it showboating.

His own coach said as much.  Boo Yah!

I'm hoping for number 500 tomorrow against Missouri.

BATON ROUGE, La. — Florida senior center Jon Horford was not a fan of LSU forward Jarell Martin's Globetrotters-style dunk late in the first half against the Gators.

On a breakaway off a steal, the 6-foot-10 Martin rotated the ball underneath his legs in transition before the slam that put the Tigers ahead to stay 28-26.

When asked about it, Horford insinuated it was a hot dog play.

"I wish I was there," Horford said. "If I was there, I would have tackled him."

The dunk wound up being a turning point in LSU's eventual 70-63 win over the Gators at the Maravich Assembly Center. It ignited the crowd of 9,203 and was part of a 9-0 run late in the first half that put LSU ahead 33-26 halftime.

"The steal that Martin had, the basket he made, was huge," LSU coach Johnny Jones said. "I'm not sure at that time of the game we needed all of the extra there. That is a lesson learned, but I'm glad it went in and we were able to make the basket. At the same time, I thought it gave us a great deal of energy, because we came right back on another steal on the open floor and scored a basket."

For good measure, Martin closed the run with a deep 3-pointer at the first-half buzzer, making the second straight game the Gators had an opponent make a 3-pointer to close the half. Vanderbilt guard Riley LaChance made a 3-pointer to put the Commodores up 25-19 at the half Wednesday.

Hitting the glass

If there was a bright spot for the Gators on Saturday, it was on the backboards. Florida outrebounded LSU 42-36 and scored 13 second-chance points against the Tigers.

Rebounding has been an issue on-and-off for the Gators throughout the season, but without leading rebounder Dorian Finney-Smith (suspension), the Gators outrebounded Vanderbilt by 10 (41-31) and LSU by six.

Walk-on forward Jacob Kurtz had a near double-double with nine points and eight rebounds. Horford had six points and nine rebounds, while freshman forward Devin Robinson matched a career high with seven rebounds.

"When Devin Robinson gets inside and rebounds like that, it helps us," Florida coach Billy Donovan said.

Etc.

Donovan remained at 499 career wins, dropping to 499-203 for his career. Donovan will get his next crack at his 500th career win Tuesday night when the Gators play at Missouri. … Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley attended the game, as did Kurtz's parents, Laurie and Mike Kurtz. … With the loss, Florida dropped to 1-14 when opponents score 60 or more against them. The Gators are 12-0 when holding teams under 60 points. … Point guard Kasey Hill finished with a season-high four steals. … The Gators dropped to 2-7 on the road this season.
