I went to the O&B game last week, haven't had a chance to post my thoughts until now. I have perused the articles written about the game and for the most part they have been positive, I'm not sure I would agree...
Here are my random thoughts:
- the Friday night game is great. Incredible energy and vibe on campus with the whole fan fair and food trucks on the north side of the stadium, had a real game day feel.
- went to the baseball game for the first four innings before the game, was surprised at how small the crowd was.
- the format of the game, pitting the ones against the twos sucks. It naturally creates a lopsided game as you wouldn't expect the two offense to do much against our one defense. By dictating a lopsided game, it takes a bit of the fan enthusiasm out of the atmosphere.
- While Franks played well, I still thought he locked in on targets and missed a couple that would have gone for big gains, one time in particular, Perrine ran a wheel route and Franks never even looked in his direction, would've been a TD.
- our OL is still a concern. Pass blocking was good for the most part, but run blocking was abysmal. This was our #1 OL going against the #2 DL, couldn't generate any space or holes in the run game. I hope they improve immensely over the summer.
- Toney is a special player. We have to get him on the field, the kid has the it factor.
- our WRs are very talented, will be fun to watch this year.
Of course it is hard to tell n any of this as MAC intentionally creates a big mismatch in the teams. It's almost as he pits the ne vs the twos to validate the coaches decisions, but to me it is hard to know are they good or just that much better than the second string? Case in point, when they let Trask run with the ones, he flys down the field for a TD. But interestingly, they didn't have Franks run with the twos....
All in all, a great weekend in Gainesville, saw some lacrosse, baseball and football. Was supposed to hit the Sunday games but had to leave early.
Oh, Satchel's pizza is the best!
