Re: [gatortalk] FW: [gatornews] [SUN]: UF guard Hester to transfer

Don't think he was invited to transfer.  I think he looked at the numbers and realized he wasn't going to start this year.  These kids have so many advisors telling them they are ready for the league that it messes with their minds.  This will sh him all the success wherever he decides to go.  As for the Gators, we'll be fine.  Probably will have one or two more open schollys with Robinson and possibly Egbunu going pro.  I think we will see another grad transfer this year, should be fun!

Since we had a new guy take his scholarship the same day I think he was probably invited to transfer.

I usually hate to see someone leave the team like this.

But, I wonder if his leaving won't just open up a scholarship for a better player.

Thoughts?

UF guard Hester to transfer

Florida freshman guard Eric Hester has decided to transfer. [Brad McClenny/The Gainesville Sun]

Florida freshman guard Eric Hester has decided to transfer, according to multiple sources.

The 6-foot-3 Hester averaged 2.2 points and 0.5 rebounds in limited playing time for the Gators last season behind guards Kasey Hill, Chris Chiozza and KeVaughn Allen. Hester appeared in 20 games but showed promise as an on-ball defender and 3-point shooter (11-19, 57.3 percent from beyond the arc) in his brief appearances on the court.

Hester's decision to leave opens a scholarship for incoming freshman point guard Michael Okauru, who signed his letter of intent today. Okauru joins forward Chase Johnson, center Isaiah Stokes and swingman DeAundrae Ballard as the fourth member of UF's 2017 class.

With the addition of Okauru, Florida currently has 13 players holding 13 scholarship spots. But that number could dwindle by two if both forward Devin Robinson and center John Egbunu decide to keep their names in the NBA draft. Both have until May 24 to decide whether to return to school.

Was really looking forward to Hester in year #2. He played well in limited minutes. Hit the outside shots when they were there. Disappointing. Wish him well.

@941FLA Lowe I think so too. I liked when he was on the court. 'Course I trust coach had his reasons. Still, it's a shame to see him transfer.

Sounds like the young man had an issue with the concept of "paying his dues". Could be wrong, but significant PT was awaiting him this year. Team culture is priority #1.

I thought Hester should have played ahead of Hill this year, as he was an offensive threat. He will be missed going forward and I wish him the best of luck.

@Daniel Findlan Casey Hill never played up to his billing being a McDonalds All American. Hester should have played more because there were plenty of nights when we needed scoring help and if he is a good on-ball defender thats a plus. I don't understand why now though because he should be set for prime time in the coming year. Maybe its more to story than we know.

@Na'im Rashad just because he could score at times and was considered a good defender doesn't mean that he was ready to run the offense or who knows how his ball control skills were in practice. I completely have faith in Coach White and his player decisions. Daniel, to think that a Freshman with no college experience at all, and not considered a pre-college lottery pick would play over a senior is just crazy.

i THOUGHT Hester would be in the rotation for the 2017-18 season, but apparently he wanted assurance from White he would be a starter. Tough to make that declaration but wish him the best. Now, though, he's an ex-Gator.

Is Okauru considered a significant upgrade over Hester? Hester would have been vying for considerable playing time in Kasey Hill's absence, right? This departure raises questions.

@Matthew Hirsch Totally agree about the appearance of things, it seems like there is more to this story than we know. He would have to figure that his playing time would be significant next year if he produced on the big boy level. Maybe we will hear more of this story later.

@Matthew Hirsch I don't think that Okauru and Hester is any sort of match since I believe that Hester is considered a combo guard, but more two-guard, which will put him behind hopefully the best two-guard in the SEC next year, and according to coach White, the best offensive threat during practices last year. Both will be Juniors next year, and even if Allen leaves after next year for the draft, Hudson will more than likely be here the next two years, leaving Hester scrapping for PT. Then... » more

@Corey Mulvihill I agree that it has to be a PT issue. Sorry to see him go though.
