RE: [gatortalk] FW: [gatornews] [SUN]: Another highly ranked foe for No. 1 Gators

This is cool!  I'm happy Jenny Rowland has been able to continue the success of Rhonda Faehn.

I guess it wasn't that difficult with Bridget Sloan, et al.

They musta heard you, Oliver - they totally kicked Bama butt on Friday.  Alabama had their highest score all year...so UF just decided to go ahead and post theirs (the biggest score in the nation this year, so far).  THREE perfect 10s!  And probably should have been 4 - one of the judges gave Sloan a 10 on her floor routine (the other a 9.95).

The team was at the women's basketball game for a little bit on Sunday, in the stands - probably stopped in after AM practice.

So far, so good for first-year Florida gymnastics coach Jenny Rowland and her top-ranked Gators.

Facts

Friday
Who:
 No. 5 Alabama (2-2, 1-1 SEC) vs. No. 1 Florida (3-0, 1-0)
When: 6:45 p.m.
Where: O'Connell Center; gates open at 5:30 p.m.
TV: SEC Network (Gainesville/Ocala Cox cable 1068)
Online: SEC Network +
Tickets: $5 for adults; children 17 & under and UF students with Gator1 card admitted free.

UF improved to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in Southeastern Conference action with last Friday's 197.075-195.90 win at No. 8 Auburn.

Next up for the Gators is No. 5 Alabama (2-2, 2-1) at 6:45 p.m. today in the O'Connell Center in their home SEC opener.

"The girls came back learning a lot," Rowland said. "It was our first head-to-head SEC competition away, so I think it was really important. The freshmen came back after hopefully getting some jitters out of their system and learning from it."

The Gators swept the meet's events against the Tigers (2-2, 0-2), with sophomore All-American Kennedy Baker leading the way with a 9.95, the high score for any event, to take the floor exercise title for the third time this season.

Senior All-American Bridget Sloan won her third straight all-around title (10th overall) with a score of 39.575 and added her third straight uneven bars title with a 9.925 mark en route to winning the SEC Gymnast of the Week honor for the third consecutive time.

Sloan has now won 75 event titles at UF to rank fifth in the program's 44-year history.

She now takes aim at the current No. 4, Kristen Guise, who has 78.

"I can't say enough about Bridget Sloan," Rowland noted. "She comes into practice day and after day and grinds through. In competition, she thrives."

Sophomore All-American Alex McMurtry won her third vault title (10th of her career) and added her first career win on the balance beam, with winning marks of 9.90 in each event, to claim SEC Specialist of the Week honors. while Baker's 39.475 was good enough for second place in the all-around and freshman Alicia Boren shared third with Auburn's Caitlin Atkinson, each with a 39.275.

"I'm really excited to be back home," Baker said. "Alabama is a really good SEC team, and I think it's going to be a really good SEC meet between both teams."

This evening also is the start of "UFill the Dome" weekend, with the Florida men's basketball team hosting No. 9 West Virginia at noon Saturday and the women's basketball team squaring off against No. 12 Kentucky at 1 p.m. Sunday.

"Alabama coming in on Friday, it's going to be a great meet," Rowland said. "I know they always are prepared, and they're going to come in and bring their A-team. They're going to be ready for battle, as will the Gators."

Tonight's meet will air live on the SEC Network.
