Thanks, Gene. Having a little trouble wrapping my head around it, but something just doesn't sound right here. Do you get the same feeling? that something seems amiss in the attitude department. At any level of competition, the individual with the natural ability and superior trainin should have the advantage, though often the underdog wins. I would say the mental aspect is huge and I think we are lacking there. And---that character comes from the leadership down.

I tend to agree, but Devil's Advocate might say each player can only control what they do, and you can't waste too much emotional energy stressing over another teammate's errors.  For example, if a defense has to unexpectedly jump back on the field after a turnover, I don't want them 'invested' in the offense's performance, but focused on what they have to do right then.  And you know the kid has to be fielding some leading questions about whether offensive performance is affecting his attitude.

Still, I do think it could be a worrying sign.  A team divided or squabbling or finger-pointing won't do a good job at controlling their individual performances either.

A team is a "team", not a defensive unit, special teams unit, or offense---all somehow cobbled together. This is 100% coaching philosophy period. That thought process tells me the team is divided. That can't work. Doesn't work. Isn't working. Everybody needs to be invested in everything, not just their position responsibility or their unit's responsibility. I would be interested if any of you would comment on this idea, whether you agree with me or not. I just thought the quote was telling in this regard.
