RE: [gatortalk] Re: [gatornews] [SUN]: Dooley: Unacceptable outcome

Watching the Gator 'offense' (and that word DOES need quotes), I wonder who is deciding on which QB plays.  Seems to me, WM is making the choice.  Roper is not.

Why is that?  Isn't Roper (and Durkin) a sort of 'assistant head coach?'  OC and DC are very important positions, and the guys who have those positions (seems to me again) are supposed to be very talented.  Why's WM telling Roper who to play?  Roper (I assume) draws up the plays since we hear all along about Roper installing "his offense."  If it's his offense, why isn't HE deciding who is at the so-called skill positions?

Just like any other business.  The Big Boss has a few Department Managers under him (or her).  The Big Boss should have people in those positions who are good enough to make their own personnel decisions, and the Big Boss should only step in to overrule them if the decision is obviously a disaster.

I can't help but think life would be 100% easier for WM if every time the offense craps out, WM points to Roper and says "Hey Kurt, what's up?  This is your offense.  Driskel isn't getting it done.  Take him out."  Then it's on Roper, which I think it should be.

One more thing about Driskel and Kelvin Taylor.  Against LSU, Taylor apparently made a big blocking mistake on one play, and he pretty much sat out the rest of the game.  Why treat Taylor and Driskel so differently?  Driskel makes bunches more mistakes than Taylor, but Driskel stays in.  But one mistake for Kelvin…and adios.  Seems oddly inconsistent.

So that's what I think.  For whatever it's worth.

I guess I am thinking about the coach the same way as I was thinking before about the quarterbacks. I didn't know whether Harris would come in and save the team, but I did know that what we were doing wasn't working, so we had nothing to lose by trying. I don't know what the best thing is to do about WM, but I do know that this isn't working. It's just my nature, but I would probably go ahead and end his tenure now, and appoint one of the coordinators as interim. If Foley does that, I will be content, but if Foley doesn't think that following his famous principle is best here, then so be it. He knows more about his job than I do. The one thing I wouldn't want to see him do is to fire WM, but then let him finish out the season. Do it or don't, but don't half do it.

In the meantime, while we wait to see what they do or don't do, I have decided I will embrace a zen-like calm. I will allow the fingernail holes in my palms to heal, and I will put away the Pepto Bismal. I have now fully embraced the fact that my Gators are embarrassingly bad this year, but I will watch them, and cheer for them anyway, because I am a Gator too and this is my team. I will hope for the best, but expect the worst, and I will leave the tough decisions to Foley and Machen. Whatever they do, and whenever they do it, will be fine with me.

I'm sure Foley wishes he knew what the best plan is.  Nobody knows.  There are upsides and downsides to throwing WM overboard now, or doing it at the end of the season.

Nobody knows what the best choice is.  Foley is undoubtedly talking to lots of people, and hell, consulting his Ouija Board.  If he were to fire WM today, I would understand.  Wait till the end of the season, I understand that as well.

As fans, all we can do is try to stay as optimistic as we can, and have faith in Foley.  This is certainly a terrible situation to be in.  Foley's staying with WM just like WM is staying with Driskel.  But Driskel has clearly lost every shred of confidence in himself.  He's just a uniform out there, there's nobody in it anymore.  If we're gonna stink up the joint, and suck so badly, then let the freshman play the whole game.  At least he'll be getting game experience for the next few years.

What a mess.

It doesn't happen often but Julie is been wrong before and I happen to believe that it will happen within the next two weeks they're probably just working out the logistics of what's going what's going to happen when

IMO if the season is to be salvaged the firing should take place now.

Although it seems to be the only possible choice to fire Muschamp it isn't the right choice.

Firing Zook when he did wasn't right either.

There was a cloud over Zook's head before he was fired. And, a cloud after. The Georgia game became a foregone conclusion. There was no chance of talking to another candidate in the middle of the season. No chance of hiring anyone.

It was a waste. And interfered with planning for a winnable game.

I think Foley learned from that obvious mistake and is not going to do anything before the season is over.

Back in 2004, if Foley had just said 'it's time to pull the plug on this one,' then our anticipation now might not be so high, but he is the one who declared this a fundamental principle of his management style. It also makes sense, and so that creates expectations on the part of fans. Is there anyone left who thinks that Muschamp must not be fired sometime this year? If you're going to do it eventually, just go ahead and get it done so that everyone else can move forward. I hate that it has come to this, but it has.

@pat_dooley: Try to enjoy the bye week. There will be no news next two weeks coming out of the UAA. So you can simmer down. For now.

Before the season, there were a lot of people who thought Will Muschamp had to beat his alma mater to save his job.

But after what we witnessed Saturday night, I'm not sure the Georgia game will matter.

Let's put it this way — after Missouri's 42-13 thrashing of Florida, the Georgia Southern game from last year doesn't seem so bad.

The smell of this performance is something the Gator fans in attendance won't be able to get out of their clothes for awhile. It was a rotten milk and burnt hair poured into a used diaper and left in the sun for a month.

The facts are simple — Florida has lost 10 of its last 13 games, four out of it's last five SEC home games and has been dreadfully dull in doing so. Losing is never fun, but it's rare that it is this numbingly miserable.

Florida has been shut out in the first half of two of its last three games. On Saturday night, the Gators were dumpster-fire awful in two phases of the game (offense and special teams).

Florida lost to a team that was shut out at home last week, gained 20 yards in the second half Saturday night and had only seven first downs on the night. Florida turned it over six times to a team that came into the game with zero turnovers gained in SEC games.

Muschamp's insistence on sticking with Jeff Driskel has backfired so many times he's covered in gunpowder. Saturday night was the worst yet. I'm not saying Treon Harris is the answer after leading Florida to a pair of scores after the game had been decided.

I just know Driskel is not the answer and his performance over the last four games should eliminate him from consideration at the most important position on the team.

"The offense was just abysmal," Muschamp said. "We've got to narrow it down to things we do well and it's not much. So figure it out."

Wait. Weren't we told this offense had the most talent Muschamp has had at Florida before the season? And that Kurt Roper was going to be the answer for an offense that had been anemic for three years?

Here's what Florida is now that it wasn't under Brent Pease and Charlie Weis — a turnover machine.

Muschamp talked after the game about the turnovers, about how the blame falls on his shoulders and then proceeded to blame his players for their mistakes.

And there is no question that there has been a lot of underachieving by the players on this football team. But players are a reflection of their coaches.

Muschamp can blame Austin Hardin for not booting the opening kickoff in the right area of the field, but I recall seeing 10 players in blue jerseys running down the field and not laying a hand on Marcus Murphy.

He can blame the offensive line and his starting tailback but the starting quarterback was involved in four of the six UF turnovers.

Last week's loss could be attributed to bad luck. This was bad football.

I don't know if he can survive what has transpired over the last month starting with the debacle in Alabama. There isn't a person outside the football building who believes this can be turned around. And that means there will be three bad seasons in four tries for Muschamp.

That's unacceptable at Florida. Heck, it's unacceptable at South Florida.

Muschamp said he's not going to worry about things he can't control, such as his job security and apparently his quarterback's penchant for giving the ball to the other team. The chants of "Fire Muschamp!" were loud, the boos were plentiful and the stands emptied early.

The fan base has has enough. The ones who were ready to dump Muschamp after last season are screaming "I-told-you-so" with the decibel level rivaling that of sticking your head in a jet engine. Which would be less painful.

The ones who have stuck behind him are easing their way out of the back door of the room now that Muschamp is only one game over .500 in SEC games.

It's going to be an ugly bye week in the Gator Nation.
