Re: [gatortalk] Talking with Shane Matthews (Notes From Gatorsports Message Board)

Did Shane Matthews really throw only one interception in his entire career? That seems unbelievable. In the media guide, he is not even on the list of UF QBs with the  lowest interception percentage or of consecutive passes without an interception. Maybe he said he ony threw one game-losing pick. I do remember that pick to Antonio Langham in the 1992 SEC championship game.

Talking with Shane Matthews

Had the chance to hear Shane speak the other night. Had a chance to talk to him as well. No earth shattering news, but some points are interesting. Some topics he touched on were actually topics on this board earlier in the week so I thought some may be interested.

UF's defense is full of NFL talent. Muschamp has no problem bringing in defensive talent. In fact there is at least someone at every position who will at least have a cup of coffee in the NFL from the current defense.

Uf's defensive backs are the best group of college defensive backs he has seen this year not doubt. All have a chance in the NFL. They reason they get beat is the huge amount of man coverage they play. No one in football plays as much man coverage as UF. This is really why Gurley got the TD. Morrison slipped and the rest is history. He raved about the UF DB's.

Spurrier will be ready to attack with all the man coverge UF plays.

He struggles to find SEC talent on UF's offense and sees no NFL talent there. (Not counting Taylor, Robinson or Fulwood.) Not sure if Robinson and Fulwood are struggling with the offense or if the coaching staff just does not trust playing the freshman receivers. Patton is fast but undersized and would not start on most SEC teams.  Murphy is not an SEC caliber QB. Unsure on how good UF's other backup QB's are. Driskel is SEC caliber but had a bad game against Miami and still threw for over 300 yrds.

JD needs help with playmakers next year. UF has no playmakers this year on offense and really has not had any for a few years (receiver wise).

In all his years playing football (HS/ College/ 14 NFL seasons) he only threw one pick-six. It was in the 1st ever SEC Championship Game vs Alabama.

He was able to tour Alabama's facilities when UF played there last time since he played for Saban in his last NFL season with Miami. 'Bama has the nicest facilities of any school. Not really about money, but UF just has nowhere else left to build/ add on.

Spurrier left UF after 12 years because he wanted a new challenge and he got tired of people complaining about winning 10 and 11 games.
Spurrier would have been more successful in the NFL with and NFL caliber QB. Admits that he and Danny were not the answer in DC. Said Spurrier did not protect his NFL QB's well enough either. Spirrier will coach 3-4 more years.

Kerwin Bell- Thinks he is one of the best offensive coaches out there. Knew the interview with he and Muschamp went well. Said not sure Kerwin wants to be and OC and have to report to someone. Since Kerwin left playing and became a coach he has pretty much been his own boss. Built the HS program in Ocala and has built JU to be succesful. He is coaching his kid currently and makes enough money to be happy.

Knows Muschamp can be succesful at UF if he gets the offensive talent upgraded.

Thinks A&M will really come back to the pack when Johnny Football leaves.

Just some interesting tidbits.
