10 Myths and Legends about UF

Over the years, many myths and legends have sprung from the UF campus. Can you separate truth from fiction?

  • Myth: A cook named Steve who worked at a cafeteria in Anderson Hall still haunts the place by banging on his pots and pans.
Verdict: The noise is actually the clanging of radiators.
  • Myth: Student “artifacts” were found in Sledd Hall, including a trippy basement 1960’s mural and remnants of a long-ago ritual known as a panty raid.
    Verdict: Yep.
  • Myth: Albert and Alberta are romantically involved.
Verdict: Wrong! And they’re not brother and sister, either. In fact, their relationship has never officially been defined.
  • Myth: A tree on campus was grown from a seed that went to the moon and back.
Verdict: True story. The 70-foot-tall sycamore tree was once a tiny passenger that travelled aboard Apollo 14 in 1971. (Its exact location is confidential.)
  • Myth: Gargoyles, gargoyles, gargoyles.
Verdict: They’re real. But they won’t hurt you.
  • Myth: A secret spot behind the face of the clock at Norman Hall has been the site of romantic interludes.
    Verdict: No comment.
  • Myth: While working as a groundskeeper, a young Tom Petty planted a tree on campus.
Verdict: The story is true, but exactly which tree is the “Tom Petty tree” is unknown.
  • Myth: Is Norman Hall haunted? It's said there's an old hospital bed on the top floor that is mysteriously unmade every morning after being re-made each day.
Verdict: Too afraid to find out.
  • Myth: Natural springs flow under the east stands of the Swamp.
    Verdict: Absolutely true.
  • Myth: The Gators will lose to Vanderbilt on Saturday.
    Verdict: Total lie.
