I think that's just an allegiance to the players he recruited. Steve Spurrier, who made beating Georgia a priority when he became Florida's head coach in 1990, called UF coach Jim McElwain to congratulate him after the Gators' 27-3 victory over the Bulldogs two weeks ago.
"That means a lot. It did. I enjoyed it," McElwain said. "I look forward to this, you know, getting out of the way where then I can get in and really pick his brain. That guy's a Gator, man."
McElwain said he's looking forward to developing a relationship after the season, once everything has settled down from Spurrier's stunning resignation at South Carolina a month ago.
McElwain said he is not looking forward to getting on the golf course with the former Head Ball Coach.
"I don't want to lose my money," he said.
Cox getting it done
On a defense with several big-time players, defensive end Bryan Cox Jr. is a player who seems to get little attention. But the coaches are well aware of his contributions.
Not only is Cox playing at a high level on defense, he's also executing an important role on offense as a blocking back. His block on the edge freed tailback Kelvin Taylor for his touchdown run against Vandy, UF's only TD of the game.
"We recognize those who don't show up in the box score," McElwain said. "This guy is (recognized) based on his play and how hard he goes. Both he and CeCe (Jefferson), taking an extra role for us on offense in our gray package, is something. Man, those guys are giving everything they've got.
"In Bryan's case, this guy loves to play the game. He plays the game the way you should, with an effort and an intensity on that given down, as hard as he can go. That's a credit to him. In turn, guys see that on film. We always talk about being proud of what you put on film. Your film is your resume. It's what's out there forever. He truly can be proud of what he puts on film because of how hard he plays."
Along with his crucial block, Cox had nine tackles, including a sack and a tackle for loss.
He was asked if he felt that was his best game of the season.
"My father thinks so. So I guess so," he said. "I'm going to go with what he says."
His father, Bryan Cox, is the defensive line coach for the Atlanta Falcons and a former NFL standout.
"We usually talk after every game and he usually gets on me about my performance," Cox said. "He said it was a good game."
Bullard OK?
McElwain announced Monday that standout defensive tackle Jon Bullard is doubtful for Saturday's game with an injured arm, but the players apparently think Bullard will play Saturday.
"I mean it could be big (if Bullard is out). But I've got faith that he'll be out there," senior defensive back Brian Poole said.
Tailback Kelvin Taylor is practicing the same faith.
"It will be OK. He'll be fine," Taylor said. "I really don't know too much about it, but it will be fine."
The Gators will be without tackle Joey Ivey, who will miss his second game with a strained stomach muscle. Defensive end Jordan Sherit has to sit out the first half after being called for targeting in the second half of the Vandy game.
Junior safety Marcus Maye also offered up a positive report on safety Keanu Neal, who is questionable for Saturday's game with an injured foot.
"He's fine. I guess he had an ankle injury, but he's doing good," Maye said. "He's in the training room 24/7. He's getting a few reps here in practice, so he's doing fine."
Hardin comes through
Florida's place-kicking woes don't seem quite as urgent after the struggling Austin Hardin made a 43-yard field goal in the final minutes to win the Vandy game Saturday.
McElwain was asked it the moment might be big for Hardin's confidence.
"I think your confidence any time is just like you're a shooter and you make that shot and you feel pretty good about the next one," he said. "Now, it's just continue to work through that process. He was going to kick the deep ones and the other guy was going to kick the short ones. He's done a great job kicking off, obviously. That's been a weapon for us. We've just got to continue to do that."

Taylor said he had a chance to watch Saturday's showdown between Alabama and LSU and was impressed with both star tailbacks -- LSU's Leonard Fournette and Alabama's Derrick Henry.
"Two very good running backs, Derrick Henry and Fournette. Both of those guys are powerful, fast," Taylor said. "Both of those guys are two of the best running backs in our conference. It was a really good matchup."
Taylor and Henry were friendly rivals in high school and they still talk, Taylor said.
"Oh yeah, that's my boy. We always mess with each other on Snapchat all the time," Taylor said. "We always mess with each other."
