RE: [gatortalk] Re: [gatornews] [SUN]: Roundup: Sloan injured as gymnastics team opens with win against Ball State

Someone said, I think Rhonda Faehn, that she was hoping Sloan would be back sometime this season.
Didn't sound too good.

I saw the meet over live streaming. The competition at Ball State was far from SEC-caliber and sometimes that weighs even more favorably in the superior team's scores when it comes to judging.  It'll be tougher when UF is up against co-National Champ Oklahoma or facing Auburn, Alabama, Georgia, etc.  The good news is that the incoming freshmen look to be very talented and the gymnast who took Sloan's place on the beam had a much better routine than expected.  The bad news is that Sloan was just about a sure thing to score 9.9+ in every apparatus, so her absence will be noticed.

Sad that two UF gymnasts were injured on that stinking Ball State floor exercise mat.  Senior Jamie Shisler is out for the season as she tore her Achilles during pre-meet warmups, and then Bridget Sloan injured her foot and will be out for who-knows-how-long.  I'm not even sure what happened as she didn't appear to make a bad step in her landing - just suddenly after her tumbling pass she couldn't continue on.

The news article says this is the highest the gymnastics team has ever scored for their first meet of the season.

They have been national champs 2 years in a row.  And…  they could be better this year!

MUNCIE, Ind. — Florida's top-ranked gymnastics team opened its season Sunday with a win at Ball State in front of a standing-room only Irving Gym crowd of 1,631, but it could have come at a cost.

During floor exercise, junior All-American Bridget Sloan injured her right ankle on her final tumbling pass and could not finish the routine.

"We won't know the full details until she gets examined by our medical staff tomorrow and gets a MRI," UF coach Rhonda Faehn said.

"That will give us the full information and can determine the healing process from there. We are keeping our fingers crossed that it is a bump in the road and she will be back before the season ends."

Florida turned in a 196.925, which equals the program's second-highest season opening score. Ball State posted a 193.70.

Event winners for UF were Sloan (Vault, 10.0), Bridgette Caquatto and Sloan (Uneven bars), Claire Boyce (balance beam), Caquatte (Floor exercise) and Kytra Hunter (All-around).

The Gators started off well in the opening two rotations. Sloan became the nation's first in 2015 to post a 10.0 mark to win vault. That mark helped the Gators' tally a 49.50, just a bit off the 2014 season best of 49.55. The Gators also turned in a 49.45 on uneven bars.

"It was a little bit of a mixture," Faehn said of the meet.

"After Bridget was injured on floor, it was hard. The team was rattled heading into beam because there is a lineup change and of course, everyone is concerned about Bridget. So I was proud of how they responded.

"It is always a challenge to have any expectations for the first meet because you just really never know. You have to have that starting point. There were some great moments, no doubt."

The Gators open their home schedule at 6:45 p.m. Friday against No. 12 Auburn (1-0). Auburn opened its season Friday with a 194.150-193.750 win at North Carolina. The Florida-Auburn dual is the SEC Network's first live gymnastics meet.

Women's basketball: Florida's worst offensive performance of the season spelled doom against one of the nation's best 3-point shooting teams, as the Gators fell at Missouri, 66-47.

The Gators actually led, 24-22, at halftime, but seven of the Tigers' first eight field goals in the second half were 3-pointers and Florida wasn't able to play catch-up from long range.

"We shot poorly and unfortunately that's not a new trend for us," UF coach Amanda Butler said. "That's why it's just so important that we don't have those defensive breakdowns, in particular defensive breakdowns as rebounders. If you're not going to shoot well, we have to have a heroic effort on the boards and we didn't have that. You can't count on your shots to fall on the road but you can count on the way you defend and the way you rebound and that was not there for us tonight."

Ronni Williams and Cassie Peoples both scored 12 points to lead Florida, while Kayla Lewis collected 11 rebounds with seven points.

Florida fell to 9-8 overall and 1-3 in the SEC, while Missouri improved to 11-6, 1-3.

The Gators travel to Lexington, Ky., for a 7 p.m. game Thursday against the Wildcats (14-3, 3-1). It will be televised on the SEC Network.
