Re: [gatortalk] Fwd: [gatornews] Bianchi: It's finally time for Bob Stoops to coach Gators - Orlando Sentinel

Well, sure. All we're doing is chatting about who we'd like to see, or like not to see. I believe Foley when he said on Monday that he hadn't spoken to anyone yet, and that he won't speak to a coach who is still in season. There won't be any real information probably for weeks, but that doesn't matter, because the speculation stage is one of the best parts of a coaching change for fans. I enjoy hearing everyone's opinions about which coaches they like, or don't like, and why.

Keep in mind that if we all talk about someone it doesn't mean that's the guy.

It's just fan speculation fueled by some sports reporter.
Stoops is boring and, you make a good point, he would be coming to Florida to wrap up his career.

We could get Spurrier for another year if we want that.

I think the guy Foley chooses will be younger, and…  will be an offense minded coach.

There are several candidates that meet these criteria without Stoops coming back.

On paper, it's hard to argue against Stoops. One national championship and 8 conferences championships is pretty impressive. SOS only had one national championship, too, but no one criticizes him for it.

Still, I find myself unexcited by the prospect. I want a coach on the way up who thinks this is the best job ever, not one who thought OU was the better job, but that this might be a good place to wrap up a career. If it turns out to be him, then it'll be fine, but he's not my first choice.

Me too, it sort of makes sense with the little bit of clues we have, especially timing. I understand where Oliver is coming from, but sadly, he may be our best overall choice. I do worry about getting OU's sloppy seconds, and then there's the whole Big Game Bob thing…

I have one word for this suggestion. No.

Stoops never wanted the Florida job before, why now?

Besides, what has he done, really?  Won a NC. Then what? His photo is next to the definition for almost in Webster's dictionary.

Several years ago, I wrote that Oklahoma football coach Bob Stoops would be crazy to take the University of Florida coaching job.

Now, I'm writing he would be crazy not to.

Memo to the man Steve Spurrier nicknamed "Stoopsy" when Spurrier was the Gators' head coach and Stoops was his defensive coordinator: You've done all you can do at Oklahoma. Now it's time to come save the program that gave you one of your biggest breaks in coaching.

Florida Athletic Director Jeremy Foley, when he hired Will Muschamp four years ago, hoped that Muschamp would bcome the next Stoops -- a former defensive coordinator who became a rock star as a head coach. Not many people know that it was Foley who actually urged Spurrier to hire Stoops.

It was back in 1996 when the Gators were looking for a defensive coordinator,  and Foley went to Spurrier with a stat sheet that showed the most dominant defenses in the NCAA. At the top of the list was Kansas State, where Stoops was a co-defensive coordinator along with Jim Leavitt, who would go on to become the head coach at the University of South Florida. Foley suggested to Spurrier that maybe he should hire Stoops.

The rest, of course, is collegiate coaching history. Stoops came to UF and took over a defense that had given up 62 points to Nebraska in the previous season's national title game. The very next season, with Stoops choreographhing the defense, the Gators won the national championship. Consequentely, Stoops became one of the hottest coaching commodities in the country and was hired by Oklahoma as its head coach two years later.

That was 16 years ago -- 16 long years ago.

Certainly, Stoops must know deep down that he's just not appreciated as he once was at  Oklahoma, where fans have booed the team this season. Spurrier himself once said that spending 10 or 12 years at one program is enough and then you need to move on. One of the stated reasons Spurrier left Florida is because Gator fans had become so spoiled that they expected perfection every season.

"Anytime we lose, it's us coaches; we screwed up," Spurrier said when he left UF. "... That sort of wears on you a little bit."

Surely, Stoops is starting to feel the same way. He won his only national title at Oklahoma in 2000 when his defense bombarded and bumfuzzled Florida State in the championship game as the Sooners took a 13-2 victory.  In the years that followed, Stoops -- "Big Game Bob" as he was once known -- was recognized as one of the top two or three college coaches in the country.

But in recent seasons, his reputation has begun to fade. His teams have been good -- just not great -- and OU fans have started grumbling.

I's time for Stoopsy to move on.

Time for him to leave Oklahoma and come back to a place that his been dreaming of his return ever since Spurrier left all those years ago.
