RE: [gatortalk] RE: [gatornews] Orlando Sentinel - Some Gators fans turn in season tickets

Same here. I am only 30 minutes north of Jax in Callahan and last fall when we were renovating our house, I was hoping to be able to listen to the games while I worked on the house. Unfortunately, I couldn’t pull a station in so I recorded them and watched them that night.

Ditto. We used to have great FM coverage here. Now the “Gator Network” is on a small AM station located near downtown Tally. The signal barely reaches out 5 miles and if it’s a night game you get nothing—zip. I’ve taken to slowly searching the AM and FM band with my old “dial” radio looking for skips from Tampa and New Orleans. Sure, they fade in and out, but at least you hear most of the game.

On a somewhat related topic. Apparently the Gator radio network is not what it once was. A couple of years ago we were watching the Dawgs and Gators with the Palm Beach Gator club and decided to head back to Port St Lucie a little early. It was nearly impossible to find a radio broadcast of the game. I thought I was going to have to get my wife to hang out of the car window holding a metal coat hanger to bring in a station.

Similar though not so drastic effect here as well. The majority of the 15-20k of scholarship dollars we give away each year comes from the annual golf event followed by the Gathering. We have had zip from the athletic department or alumni. Nada BUT---We do get Pat Dooley every year and that pulls in around 100 rabid fans for a great football preseason bash---of course we make nothing on that and feed everyone…..If we had  a couple coaches and or ex players, the golf event would draw well over 100 people(with advertising and add ons, that’s $10k to the club) and the gathering would pull in 400/500 or more folks(another $2.5k minimum). That one weekend would cover 75% of our annual budget.

Hi Stephen,

I followed along (and agreed) with everything you said except the gutting of Gator Clubs and Gatherings.  Can you explain that some?  Not sure I'm aware of that.

Collier County Gator Club doesn't exist anymore; and - even when it did - it was decades since a coach of note appeared.

I think Billy D in his first year is the last one I remember.

Without support, we couldn't sell dinner and golf tickets, couldn't give scholarships and it ended up folding.

Compare that with when Spurrier and Kruger would alternate; lots of tickets sold, the students who won the scholarships would speak; they were glorious events.

Alas, no more.
