Re: [gatortalk] Fwd: [gatornews] [SUN]: Muschamp excited about latest coaching hire

I like Muschamp. I like his conservative nature, his focus on toughness and his perception of the game as being won at the line of scrimmage. I like his passion and I like his nascent ability to relax a bit and joke around with the press. He's not an offense guy, so his choice of OC is critical. He is the defensive SOS. Where Steve ran the offense and just turned the defense over to the DC, Muschamp needs to just turn the offense over to his OC. His first OC hire was disastrous, but I get why he thought it would be a good hire when he made it. Pease as OC seems promising to me. Only time will tell, but we only need a solid, not spectacular, offense to compete at the highest level with a Muschamp defense. My sense is that Pease can deliver at least that. If, in a few years, he develops a Boise style offense, then we won't be having these conversations any more. The only stick-in-my-craw, must-do-at-all-costs thing that sits on me like a lump of lead is his inability so far to beat UGA. Even if we go 11-2 every year, we must hold our own against UGA or the rest doesn't matter.

What Steve said was exactly my point about Muschamp inheriting a less-than-stellar talent pool.  The Gators had zero depth in the OL and if anyone says we had good WRs, I'd like them to please show where any of them managed to get separation or run a decent route (don't get me started on the few who had hands like feet).  You'll note that the talent going in the NFL draft are defense, not offense.  When SOS left I would argue there was quite a lot of talent on O as well as D.  After Zook, maybe more so on both sides.  Let's not forget that many of Meyer's recruits of questionable character quickly jumped ship when someone who actually walked the talk about discipline took the helm.

I think 11-2 was amazing considering the issues we had - the OL was good when everyone was healthy but was really bad when injuries hit. No playmakers at WR, and a young QB in his (and the rest of the offense's) first year in a new system.

I like the core values of toughness that 'Champ seems to be instilling in the team, and unlike Meyer, he seems to be willing to pass on a talented high school superstar if he has character issues and/or is a drama queen.

Games like the Sugar Bowl happen all of the time when one team really wishes they were playing elsewhere and the other wants to make a statement. Heck, even mighty Alabama got their butts handed to them by Utah the year we played Okie in the title game.

I really don't know about Muschamp yet but have say I have my doubts. Like someone said the 11-2 was somehow unsatisfying and the Sugar bowl was just a flat out embarrassment. As much as I used to hate the dawgs I have mellowed on that so I don't really hold that against him but these offenses the last couple of years have been real stinky.

ANOTHER reason I don't trust him. I just keep reminding myself Pat Dye went to ga and Vince Doo... went to Auburn.
It sure would help if we beat Georgia.

I don't forget, but I DO try to forgive. Much like the disastrous Ole Miss game a few years ago, I think the players had convinced themselves that Louisville was a pushover. Maybe Muschamp did also. Like Ken, I'm still having a difficult time overlooking the dawg connection. Just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I have to say, I'm not convinced about Muschamp yet.
The Sugar Bowl was a huge disappointment. It seems to be mostly forgotten and we've all moved on, but we lost to Louisville!
We forgave Spurrier for a couple of disasters. One particular galling loss to Syracuse comes to mind.
I just don't know which way to lean here. Thoughts?

Muschamp excited about latest coaching hire

Florida coach Will Muschamp introduced his latest coaching hire at Wednesday's press conference — Jeff Choate, who will coordinate special teams and coach the outside linebackers.
Muschamp and Choate said they anticipated a seamless transition even though he was not here for the spring.
"I've known Jeff. He's a guy that I've known probably going back six or seven years in recruiting the state of Texas," Muschamp said. "He's an outstanding evaluator, really good recruiter, coached on both sides of the ball.
"Having worked with someone on our staff (Brent Pease), that certainly helps — and a guy I trust. I trust Brent's opinion. So, it's exciting to have a coach like this at this time of year.
"There's never a good time, but at this time of year, it's good to add a coach to your staff and improve your staff."
Choate coached with Pease at Boise State for six seasons. In 2012, Choate coached the linebackers at Washington State. He was hired after the season to be the defensive coordinator at UTEP.
He went through the spring at UTEP, but then left when Muschamp offered him a job.
"It was a little bit out of the blue, but it was an opportunity that I could not say no to," Choate said. "Having a chance to coach in the SEC and compete at the highest level, I think anybody that's a true competitor wants to challenge themselves against the very best.
"This was an opportunity for me to do that. As hard as it was to say no to the young men at UTEP and to (head coach) Sean (Kugler) in particular, this was an opportunity I could not say no to."
Choate said coming onto the staff relatively late should not be a problem.
"If there's one situation where it would work out, ideally it would be this one," he said. "D.J. (Durkin) and I are very similar in the way we approach special teams, and I had spent some time talking with him and studying some things Florida had done here. We exchanged ideas.
"It's me learning terminology and things. I don't think there will be a lot of technique or scheme that will be adjusted. Without a spring, I don't see there being wholesale changes. We'll tweak some things and have game-plan adjustments.
"But I think we've got to keep it as straightforward as we can in the short term."
