Re: [gatortalk] Qb battle

I listened to the Steve Russell show on WRUF after the game, and they had some insight from some of the craptacular (in my view) play-calling.  Muschamp apparently vetoed numerous pass plays because he wanted to establish a run game and make the line, runners, etc. "toughen up".  I guess that the thinking here is that he wants them to have to deal with 8 men in the box and a defense expecting run plays in order to learn to not let it affect them.  (Steve Russell cited other teams like the recent Alabama teams who would just pound the ball unendingly.)  I think there is no way that Muschamp actually expects to be successful all year running an offense like the one we saw Saturday (let's face it, even back in the all-run days when we had Emmitt Smith and he had an ungodly amount of yards per game, it didn't always result in a win).  He apparently did state either in his post-game press conference or in conversation with one of the WRUF guys that he wanted to see more success in the vertical game.

There was more than one attempted pass downfield, other than the missed connection between Brissett and Debose (or was it Dunbar? I forget).  There were a few missed opportunities when Driskel threw behind an open receiver (the one where Dunbar had to cut back and fell comes to mind).  I really think establishing some continuity with ONE quarterback will help that problem.  I'm willing to bet Driskel gets the nod for TAMU.

All that being said, the Gators need to get better on both sides of the ball, or this is going to be a L-O-N-G year.  And there's going to be even more empty seats at Florida Field.  It made me sad to see so many gleaming aluminum benches without bodies parked over them.

One other thing: for those who didn't see the ESPN broadcast, they showed Pease up in the coaches box and he was swearing up a storm.  You didn't have to be a great lip-reader to see what he was saying.

He should use Driskel

I'm even more disappointed after seeing (even) Ole Miss, Arkansas and all other schools throw it downfield except us.  Why would a coach continually run up the middle on first down when they are stacking the box without ever even trying to open it up?  Even if 'holding back,' dont we have to have some real game experience? Also, has Dubose still not learned the playbook? I don't recall One pass thrown to him.
