Michelle Ebanks (BSBA '83) As President of Essence Communications, Inc., Michelle Ebanks leads the number one media and communications company dedicated to African-American women. The organization is comprised of diverse media and entertainment properties including ESSENCE magazine - the preeminent lifestyle magazine for African-American women, with a loyal readership of 8.5 million - and the internationally renowned Essence Music Festival, one of the largest entertainment events in the world. To read more, click here. University News First Woman President Dr. Kim Jernigan (DMD, '97) has been appointed the first woman president of the Florida Dental Association (FDA) and is a UFCD alumnus. In June, the transfer of the presidential pin from the lapel of Dr. Cesar Sabates, the first Cuban-American president of the Florida Dental Association and a revered faculty member of the UF Hialeah Dental Center, went to the lapel of Dr. Kim Jernigan. To read more, click here. Nursing Dean will retire in 2013 Kathleen A. Long, Ph.D., R.N., has announced that she will retire at the end of the 2012 – 2013 academic year. After serving as Dean for the College of Nursing since 1995, Dean Long's 18 years as dean will be the longest in the college's history. Crayton Pruitt Family Department of Biomedical Engineering Announced College of Engineering Dean, Cammy Abernathy announced that the next Chair of the J. Crayton Pruitt Family Department of Biomedical Engineering will be Dr. Christine Schmidt from the University of Texas at Austin where she currently holds the B.F.
