Re $500 a night at the Holiday Inn- Maybe they only planned to stay one night and had to pay $500 total because they had to pay for two nights.
Right now you could reserve a room for the Kentucky game Friday-Sun at $258 a night for the Holiday Inn right by campus and $169 a night for the Holiday Inn Express on SW 43rd St. For the LSU game, no rooms available at the Holiday Inn by campus, $235 a night for the Holiday Inn Express.
My general rule of thumb is that Gainesville hotels double their usual price and make you pay for two nights on game weekends, so it costs four times as much as usual if you only want to stay one night. Of course for a primo game like LSU, it's worse.
However, there's no reason you have to pay those prices if you are willing to put up with a little inconvenience. Woody has his RV. We drive up and back the same day and many people stay at hotels that are not right in Gainesville but that are on their way to/from.
