The Presidential Search Committee convened today for the first time. Please allow me to share with you some of the highlights of this meeting, which lay the groundwork for a successful search of the university's next president.
Greenwood/Asher & Associates has been selected as the search firm to solicit and accept nominations and assist the search process going forward. Named partner Jan Greenwood will be the university's lead consultant and has an excellent record of successful searches for presidents of member-institutions of the Association of American Universities and other highly regarded universities.
If you recall, she assisted with the recruitment of President Bernie Machen in 2003. She said she believes UF's growth over the last decade, sound financial leadership, and stature as a comprehensive
nationally- and internationally- recognized academic research university makeit an attractive opportunity for the next president.We reviewed the Search Committee's responsibilities, which are:
- Conducting outreach to identify highly qualified candidates, as measured by the UF Board-approved criteria;
- Identifying and implementing means for meaningful engagement by the UF community and extended family, as well as other stakeholders;
- Recommending highly qualified candidates for short campus interviews and top candidates for extensive campus visits and the Board of Trustees' consideration;
- Supporting a successful transition of the next President of the University of Florida.
To help the full Search Committee meet its goals, four subcommittees began discussions today: Marketing and Communications, Qualifications and Criteria, Compensation, and Housing.
The Qualifications and Criteria Subcommittee received benchmarking materials to begin evaluating the credentials and former positions of the presidents and chancellors of all AAU public universities and public
universities ranked in the top 19 by U.S. News & World Report. UF is both an AAU university and ranked No. 19 among publics.Additional input will come as the Presidential Search Committee and its subcommittees will hold several public meetings over the coming months. The subcommittees will present their results to the full Presidential Search Committee, which in turn will provide recommendations to UF's Board of Trustees.
Frequent communications and meaningful opportunities for engagement are high priorities for the search.
There will be faculty and student focus groups as well as other outreach to solicit and gather information from stakeholders and other sources. Some of you may be contacted to provide your input.An open forum is planned for August 24th. Details will be posted on the search website as they become available and you are encouraged to participate.
The Board of Trustees is responsible for approving the search criteria and job description and, when the time comes, will select the next President. A joint meeting between the Search Committee and the Board of Trustees will be held on August 28th.
All meeting schedules and engagement activities will be posted on the Presidential Search website at http://presidentialsearch.ufl.edu/. You also will find additional information about our search firm Greenwood/Asher & Associates and the charges of the Search Committee and Subcommittees on the website.
We plan to continue the search until the right leader is selected as the 12th president of the University of Florida.
Sincerely,
C. David Brown II
Chairman
