I think he did say a mouthful there! Of course, he's trying to motivate Zaire to keep working and learning the offense. He doesn't want him to give up. We're 1 injury away from him starting. It's obvious that he's not getting it done in practice. If he were the better option, you know he would be playing. It's not like Coach Mac enjoys losing...
Zaire was not that good when he was at ND. He typically was better with his feet than reading a D and throwing the ball around. He's not a pro style QB and was probably an insurance policy any way. I think it's clear now that Franks is a project at best. He may be good some day, but it's definitely not going to be any time soon.

Notre Dame graduate transfer Malik Zaire has not played since the opening-day loss to Michigan, but he continues to compete for playing time in practice. McElwain has not ruled out giving Zaire another chance to run the offense at some point.
"Yeah, there will be (a second chance), if he keeps continuing to work and get a little bit better," he said. "He'll continue to work the way it's been and get his opportunity when and if that comes up."
