[gatortalk] FW: [gatornews] [SUN]: Notebook: McElwain talks WR arrests, quarterback position battle

McElwain sure says a lot without saying anything.

I still don't know anything about the two WRs or the quarterbacks.

Not from this interview.  I guess that's good.

Predictably, the first question Florida coach Jim McElwain was asked on ESPN's Car Wash on Tuesday was about the Monday arrest of true freshmen wide receivers Tyrie Cleveland and Rick Wells, who are facing second-degree felony charges for firing a BB gun into a residence last week.

McElwain said the two used bad judgment and will pay a price for it.

"A lot of people go through life making choices. We all do. Everybody in this room does. And yet, here's the beauty: we have freedom of choice," McElwain said. "The thing we don't have is freedom of consequence based on our actions. Our guys know they're going to be dealt with.

"That's the way we handle things, the way I handle things. I think my track record proves that. And yet, it's not about that as much as the education of what you learned from your actions. As a teacher, as a coach, you go through every single day trying to help all these young men learn from past historical data. And that's where we're at. These guys will be dealt with and it will be taken care of."

Mac on the quarterbacks

McElwain was also asked Tuesday about the competition at quarterback between veteran transfers Luke Del Rio and Austin Appleby and true freshmen Feleipe Franks and Kyle Trask.

McElwain said the position is in good hands, whoever ends up being the starter.

"I love our quarterback room and the quarterback room is something that people don't think about," McElwain said. "Individual position rooms can affect everybody in the organization. We've got two guys who are veteran guys who know what to do and two young guys with unbelievable arm talent.

"Those guys affect everyone every single day to take a step forward. The key to playing that position isn't about being that guy that makes all the plays. Successful quarterbacks, no matter where they play or what they do, the other 10 guys around them play better because they're in the huddle."
