RE: [gatortalk] FW: [gatornews] [SUN]: A purpose to UF linebacker’s play as he tackled teammate

I guess that's the reason for the bear hug tackle.

Yeah I understood it, I guess the only downside was if his teammate had inadvertently stripped the ball from him and ECU would've recovered.

My instant reaction was, "What?"  Then… "Oh".

I watched one show last night, on the CBS Sports channel.  They said they were positive about McElwain.  Especially after his tirade.

And…  They spent a lot of time on this tackle.

All understood it.  All were positive about it too.

A purpose to UF linebacker's play as he tackled teammate

Florida defensive lineman Alex McCalister (14) is tackled by teammate linebacker Jarrad Davis after recovering a fumble in the final minute of the game against East Carolina at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium on Saturday. Florida defeated the Pirates 31-24.

Florida forced a game-clinching turnover in Gator territory on its final defensive snap against East Carolina.

But it sure didn't sound that way based on the crowd's reaction at the end of the play.

Fans and even some Gators players were baffled by what happened. Cornerback Jalen Tabor threw his arms up in disbelief.

ECU quarterback Blake Kemp's fumble bounced right into the hands of Florida defensive end Alex McCalister, who saw nothing but 70 yards of green grass and headed for the north end zone.

But he wouldn't even reach midfield.

Linebacker Jarrad Davis quickly caught up with McCalister, wrapped him up and brought him to the ground with 12 seconds left.

"It's a situation we've been practicing ever since camp," Davis said after the game. "It's something that you just never know what can happen. You guys didn't think I was going to make the tackle. That's what I did."

UF became the laughingstock of college football two years ago when it lost to FCS Georgia Southern at home and had two players block each other during an offensive play.

While equally as funny, Davis' tackle on McCalister was intentional and something the staff coached him to do under the circumstances.

"It's situational. We got the lead and the game is over," Davis said. "He can score easily, but we've just been harping on going down in those situations. Seal the game, let the offense come out to do the victory (formation). We can go strike the band up and everybody can go home with the W."

Florida coach Jim McElwain praised Davis on Monday for the heads-up play. He also added that McCalister had potential trouble lurking in the 31-24 win.

"I'll point to one of the best things that really happened: At the end of the game, Davis tackling McCalister to get down because the game is won," McElwain said. "When you watch film, No. 22 for them, their running back, was chasing and was in pretty good position to pop that ball out. That's the only way you're going to lose that game."

Gators safety Marcus Maye, one of McCalister's close friends on the team, laughed when asked about the play Monday.

"Every D-lineman's dream is to get into the end zone," Maye said. "He got a perfect bounce and it fell right into his hands. He said he was just going to take off running and I guess JD made a decision. But he wanted to get into the end zone and he had the field in front of him."

Unfortunately for McCalister, he had Davis behind him. He made sure his tackle wouldn't knock the ball loose from McCalister.

"That was scary. I tried to bear-hug him," Davis said. "It's been going around for a long time. He said if he gets the ball, nobody is going to ever tackle him. He didn't expect me coming to get him."

Neither did anyone else.
