Gainesville SUN

The television images capturing Kelvin Taylor and Jim McElwain together on the Florida sideline Saturday are far different than the one the nation saw just a few weeks ago.

There's one of a smiling McElwain putting his arm around Taylor after a Taylor touchdown run. There's another of the coach giving his No. 1 tailback a big hug after the Gators' dramatic comeback win over Tennessee.

That profanity-laced tirade McElwain directed at Taylor for making the throat-slashing gesture three weeks ago against East Carolina seems so long ago now. At least it does to Taylor, who said Tuesday he's grown from the incident and that McElwain was absolutely right to do what he did.

"Oh, I feel like I've matured a whole lot," Taylor said. "I never meant it as a throat slash, like I been telling you guys. I never should have done it, because it's all about the team.

"We can't celebrate in college, so I never should have done anything, period. I learned my lesson for sure. Just throw the ball back to the referee and don't give them nothing to throw a flag about. So, I feel like I matured a whole lot and very excited to get this game started this weekend."

As the television cameras captured in the Tennessee game, the coach-player relationship between McElwain and Taylor is strong. Stronger than ever, Taylor said.

"I feel like we've always been really close. I just feel like now, me and Coach Mac have so much respect for each other because of how we handled the situation," Taylor said. "People were taking it out of context. It wasn't even like that. I could have done the throat-slash thing in practice and he would have done the same thing, so I feel like it wasn't like that at all.

"And we both know how much love we have for each other. I felt like coach Mac really taught me how to be a man. He's a great, wonderful coach and a great guy."

Taylor said McElwain's sideline tirade wasn't directed just at him, but at the entire team, which played with a noticeable lack of discipline throughout the 31-24 victory over the Pirates.

Message received, Taylor said.

"It's football, dude," Taylor said. "People acted like he slapped me across my head or did something like that. It's football. Everyone's in the moment. Everyone just inside the moment. And I believe one player had already done something, I think that was Joey (Ivie, who took his helmet off on the field). Joey had done something.

"I understand exactly what Coach Mac was doing. He was just in the moment. He was fed up. He's just trying to discipline us. That's what the whole team needed. That's going to make the team better. I feel like he did the right thing and that's my man, Coach Mac."

The moment seems to have made Taylor a better player. His two performances since then have been strong.

He bounced back with 45 yards rushing and a touchdown against Kentucky. His performance in the win over Tennessee was one of the best of his career: 19 carries, 102 yards rushing, two touchdowns.

McElwain rewarded Taylor for his effort at UK by making him the every-down tailback in the UT game.

"I thought he did a really good job. He played a lot of plays. Really proud of some of the other things he did," McElwain said. "Being in the right spot in passing plays. In protection, he was really good. He was keyed into everything he did. But that's what we've come to expect. Great player and a great Gator, and so just happy for him."

Taylor seems confident his 100-yard performance against the Vols will be the first of many this season.

"Just trusting my holes, trust my hits," he said. "The offensive line did a really great job, so I give all the credit to those guys. There were some holes in there. We just looking forward to keeping that pace and stay in the 100 Club from now on."
