RE: [gatortalk] Fwd: [gatornews] [SUN]: Florida posts three 10s, cruises over Kentucky in Link to Pink

That's ok.  I like Pat's spin on it.

We should be ranked number 1.

Tsk, tsk, Pat Dooley.  That headline is misleading. Florida might have received 10s from separate judges but never two judges on one gymnast's routine.  (Two judges score each gymnast's routine on each event, and the average of the two scores are the final score for the athlete.)  So those really don't count as "posting a 10".

Nevertheless, the Gator ladies had an amazing night, especially the floor exercise, where every gymnast scored 9.9 or higher.

You can't blame a gymnast for hoping.

Bridget Sloan knew her uneven parallel bars routine wasn't perfect Friday night. But it was close.

"I was hoping they didn't notice," said the Florida junior. "I was hoping they didn't see (a slight mistake with her feet)."

Sloan, competing for the first time at home this season, scored a 10 with one judge and a 9.95 with the other for a 9.975 final score. It was her only event of the night and only her second competition since suffering a severely sprained ankle in the opener for the Gators.

"I was really going for that 10," she said. "I was telling everyone this was going to be the night. It's the one event I've never gotten a 10 in."

The 10 she did receive from one judge was one of three for the third-ranked Gators in an easy 198.125-195.950 win over 25th-ranked Kentucky on Friday night. Both Kennedy Baker and Bridgette Caquatto received a 10 from one judge and a not from the other in the floor exercise.

As a result, Florida posted the third-best college gymnastics score of the season. Two weeks ago, the two-time national champions posted the best score.

A crowd of 6,617 on "Link To Pink" night watched Florida set a best season-best score of 49.575 in the vault to start things off and UF survived a fall on the beam by Claire Boyce, who is nursing a groin injury.

Her fall came after Rachel Spicer had to wait through a delay to compete in the beam because of an injury to Kentucky gymnast Shelby Hilton.

"I was just ready to go," said Spicer. "It got me a little more nervous. But you have to be prepared for anything."

Spicer scored a 9.875 on the beam and — after Boyce's fall — freshman Alex McMurtry and senior Kytra Hunter scored 9.85 and 9.9 respectively.

That pretty much did it for the meet's winner and loser, but Florida put on a show in the floor exercise, scoring a 49.725. The Gators were so sharp that Boyce's 9.9 to lead off the event didn't count.

"It was from everybody," said Florida coach Rhonda Faehn. "It showed them what they can do. The crowd was incredible and our athletes like to perform."

That's especially true for the effervescent Sloan, who is expected to compete in the beam as well as the bars next week when Florida travels to Oklahoma.

"Competing at home is one of my favorite things about college gymnastics," Sloan said. "It was incredible. It was exciting to be back, especially for this meet."

Sloan's score was the fifth time she has scored 9.975 and the 15th time she was won a bars event.

"(Sloan's bars routine) was wonderful," Faehn said. "It was nice to see her go for the stick (on the dismount) which tells us her ankle is better."

Hunter was the only athlete on either team to compete in the all-around and nailed all four of her stations for a 39.6 score.
