12. One final comment on the story from last week about Shelley Meyer's quotes regarding Florida fans. She's right. We are meaner in the SEC. It's that passion that makes the league better. It definitely gets away from some fans and creates problems, but college football matters more in the SEC than it does anywhere else. That said, in the few times I've been around Ohio State fans, they'd fit right into the SEC. They are obnoxious, unrealistic and loud. But the difference between the Big Ten and the SEC is that there aren't as many secondary rivalries. Florida has more rivalry games in a season than the entire Big Ten.

This is about as good a final comment as one could make on the subject.

Back Nine: Offseason talk won't affect College Football Playoff

The Back Nine comes at you after one of those weekends where I again watched way too many college football games from years past. Is it here yet?

10. Steve Spurrier hit it right on the nose when he referred to this time of year as "the talking season." But another name for it would be "the posturing season." That's what these coaches are doing right now by taking shots at each other. Bobby Stoops has fired away at Alabama and Texas A&M. Kevin Sumlin fired back. Jimbo Fisher took a swing at the Big 12 and Art Biles counter-punched. It's not that these coaches don't like each other, it's that they are trying to position themselves in the minds of the people who will make up the committee. "Our conference can beat up your conference," they are saying over and over again. Will it matter? Probably not. Those are pretty smart people who make up the College Football Playoff Committee and things said in July will long be forgotten in December. But if any of those comments can adjust the thinking going into the season, maybe it does matter. It would be a wonderful world if everybody played the same number of conference games, played a competitive non-conference schedule and had a championship game. But that's what makes college football different from the NFL. It's quirky.

11. I saw where analysis and handicapper Danny Sheridan put out his odds for the opening weekend and he had Arkansas as a 23-point underdog to Auburn. Have the Razorbacks ever been a 23-point underdog in a season opener? The fascinating thing about the first weekend is that we have a pair of conference games in the SEC. No other conference is doing that. Of course, no other conference is launching a new network with both of those games on SEC Network. Still, the league has had a conference game to start the season in each of the last two years.

13. It was pretty emotional watching Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux and Bobby Cox at Cooperstown on Sunday. As a longtime Braves fan, it was also nostalgic to watch all of the celebrations for division and league titles and, of course, the one World Series. Those were the days. What is especially impressive about Glavine and Maddux is that they were as successful as they were during an era where players were bulking up on steroids. And they did it without throwing hard. My dad always referred to Maddux as "the surgeon." The best quote I heard on Sunday, and I think it was Leo Mazzone who said it, was when he told Glavine, "All hitters have an ego. Use it." That's just beautiful.

14. I was as stunned as anybody when Ray Rice received only a two-game suspension for knocking his then-fiancee unconscious. Then I heard this quote from NFL vice president of labor policy Adolph Birch — "So in terms of sending a message about what the league stands for, we've done that." And then I heard what ESPN's Stephen A. Smith said and tweeted. (He has since apologized for suggesting that the victim bears some of the blame). What the NFL did was send this message — you can receive a bigger suspension for eating the wrong protein bar than you can for domestic violence. Just dummy.

15. I know we can all sleep better now that LeBron James has decided what number he will wear. Here's what I don't get — four years ago, the King said they should retire the No. 23 to honor Michael Jordan. Now he's going to wear it. Which is it?

16. New York Times bestselling author Nathan Whitaker has written a new book that centers on the concussion issue. The book — "Snap Decision" — is the fictitious story of high school football players dealing with the problem and is set in North Central Florida. It's a book that every high school football player should read. And coaches, too. Things have really changed in this world because one of the many games I watched over the weekend was a 1985 LSU game where the announcers were bragging about how a player had overcome four concussions.

17. Twitter is becoming less of a forum for funny comments and more of a way to promote stories or videos. It may be time to abandon the Tweet of the Week, but here goes with one from Chipper Jones, soon to be a Hall of Famer himself — "Chill bumps watchin' Doggy (Maddux) enter the Hall! And thinking about him peeing on my foot in the shower as he asked me a question about the game."

18. The iPhone and I had our differences this week. For a brief period of time I could not send text messages. Fortunately, I could play music. Try these downloads — "Gotta Get Away" by The Black Keys, "Forgotten Man" by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and for an oldie in honor of the release of their new album "Yours Is No Disgrace" by Yes. I told my daughter that one of my favorite bands had just released a new album after many years away. "The Black Keys?" she said. "Yes," I responded. "They released one last year," she said. "No, Yes." I said. And my wife from the kitchen, with perfect timing said, "Who's on first?"
