Re: [gatortalk] FW: [gatornews] [SUN]: 6/22 - Florida football countdown - 69 DAYS!

I hear you!  I even thought twice about posting these, but it is different content than Darlene's countdown. Thanks again Darlene for annually counting down kickoff. Maybe Dooley owe's Darlene royalties?

69: The season of the Super Sophs.

Expectations were high for the 1968 season, and like so many dreams for Florida football they fell flat. So the only people excited about the 1969 team were the players and coaches who knew they might have something special.

Although it was the collection of sophomores in the backfield who garnered most of the praise as the season went along, the 1969 team also was anchored by strong seniors including two players — defensive back Steve Tannen and guard Mac Steen — who would be taken in the upcoming NFL draft.

But it was the combination of John Reaves to Carlos Alvarez that garnered national attention from their first play that resulted in a touchdown against Houston to their hookup for the winning score against Tennessee in the Gator Bowl.

That 1969 team became the first Florida team to win nine games in a season, finishing 9-1-1 with a loss at Auburn and a tie against Georgia. Ray Graves had already agreed to step down before the season so this would be the Bull Gator's last as the head coach.
