Re: [gatortalk] O&B game new format

I get closing practices during the season when you are game planning for a particular opponent.  But to close Spring and pre-season camps is a bit paranoid.

I agree with Sandy, this is just one more thing to disconnect the fans from the program.  You can point to all the other coaches that close practice, that doesn't make it right.  The NFL opens pre-season camps, some for all sessions, and some for either the morning or afternoon session. It doesn't seem to hurt them.

The camps are about fundamentals, if you are running a spread option and a 4-3 defense, you aren't really Irving anything away.  I do get it that the new age of media has made it easier to disseminate information and can create issues when feaux media sites act like experts to create noise in the system.  But the answer isn't to shut it down, learn how to use it to your advantage.

I don't recall who it was - I know he (or they, if it were multiple GatorTalkers) used to report pretty heavily during the Spurrier and Zook eras.  Once Meyer got to UF practices were closed, so I think that's when we stopped getting those dispatches.  I do miss those reports, too.

Here's something really easy the school can do for fans: open up some of the stinking practices.  I hear lots of discussion that some of the lack of excitement on the fan side stems from a feeling of being more distant from the program.  I'm not sure I agree completely, but I do know that we get less of a true feel of what to expect from the team, players, etc over the summer because of the limited access for both the general public and the media.

Who was it who used to attend the practices and write updates for Gatortalk?

I really looked forward to those.

They helped me to know what to look for and the identity of the rising players.

It sure made those early season games against the pasties more fun when I knew the new players and had an idea what to look for.
