Re: [gatortalk] Have any of you tried NetZero mobile broadband?

And one more thing to think about. Under Verizon's new plans, tethering is free (though it's part of your shared data), so if you're considering paying something per month for a portable hotspot device,  you may be able to do that with your phone for no extra money, if moving to that plan made sense for you anyway. The hitch is whether their new shared data plans will save you money even with that benefit. From looking at their new price structure, it seems like families who currently pay for lots of voice and text will be the winners and anyone who does mostly data will be losers. Individuals are the worst off. From a usability standpoint, I use personal hotspot (tethering) on my iPhone via Verizon and it works well as long as I have a good 3G signal.

If you have an Android phone, there is an app called FoxFi which turns your phone's internet connection into a WIFI hotspot.  It works great.  Only caveat is you need a good data plan.  I use mine all the time for my laptop, iPad, etc...

Thank you Stephen, Jerry and Troy, for your information and suggestions.
I am mainly concerned about the monthly bill, but I like the idea that you could just buy a month here and there rather than having a contract.
We have Verizon for our cell phones and they have these "share everything" plans, but that looks more expensive to me than having a separate iPad plan.

I also have an ipad, and love it, though I use android for phone, and pc for everything else.  The ipad just works.  Also a note, if you purchase the cell version of the ipad, even if you do not activate it, you get a built in gps chip.  If you purchase the wifi version, it has no gps and you will have to add one to it.  You always have the option of only buying a month here or there for the cell service, only when needed.  There is no contract on an ipad account.  I recommend getting a cell version, as the gps on ipad is great.  I use the garmin ap, though there are several free ones (waze and others) that are great also.  The nice thing about the garmin is the ability to not have internet when traveling for maps.

If you do any office work, the suites out there are pretty good also.  I use docs to go.
I also find I can use remote software for logging into wintel pc's and servers (remote desktop)
The vpn on the ipad is really easy, and great.  I set up a vpn on my pc at home, and can log in and grab files, and put them back.  I use a program File Browser to grab and return files when they are updated.  Much faster than remote, and really is great for just grabbing a file or two, opening it in docs to go, editing, then sending back.
Lastly, get printer pro, and you can print just about anything to a pdf file, or wirelessly to any printer hooked to a pc network that has the helper app on it.  You can always print to home with the cloud also.  Just a pretty handy app.

Thanks, Troy.

Helen,

I have two thoughts for you.  I have seen several tablets and I strongly recommend that you consider an iPad.  My experience is that they are significantly better than anything else—comparable to a Mercedes vs. a Kia.

As for the hotspot, they work OK but you might be better with a more widespread carrier such as Verizon or Sprint.

If you need a cell phone, you might want to wait until the iPhone 5 comes out in a few months.  If Sprint still has their unlimited data plan then, the iPhone 5 may substitute for the tablet.  (There are ways you can actually connect the iPhone to the iPad, but you are not supposed to do that.)

I will tell you that I have been a Windows user since Windows 95 came out and have always had regular windows machines until this past year.  For several reasons, I got a PowerMac and I run both Windows 7 and Mac.  In fact, I am currently running Windows 7 as I write this email.  I have to admit I have become an Apple fan.  The quality cannot be beat.  It was definitely worth the extra money.

If so, what's been your experience?
I got a flyer about their 4G network being available in the Tampa Bay area--$20 a month for 1GB if you buy either a USB modem or a wifi hotspot. No contract. I have been thinking about getting a tablet and liked the hotspot idea. I like things to be simple and I do not want to use a little tiny keyboard on a phone.
Thanks for any suggestions.
