[gatortalk] Re: [gatornews] University of Florida Presidential Search

"...Our next president will be a passionate advocate... "

I can't think of any one better for this qualification than our very own Oliver Barry.

The chairman lost me on the intellect part.  :-)

[UF Alumni Association]
To Family and Friends of the University of Florida:
Today it is my pleasure to appoint a search committee to recruit the 12th President of the University of Florida.
Representatives from our Board of Trustees, student body, faculty, administration, alumni and stakeholder groups have agreed to assume this tremendous responsibility. They are all distinguished leaders in their fields of expertise who have in common a commitment to the future of the University of Florida. Several of our faculty and administration representatives have been named to the National Academies or other premier academic honorary societies. All committee members are the best of the Gator Nation, and I am confident they will succeed in our effort to find a visionary new leader for our university.
We have much to offer to someone looking to lead a great institution. The University of Florida is one of the nation's premiere public, land-grant research universities with an exceptional student body and prestigious faculty. Our research expenditures total $682 million, and our technology transfer program is consistently ranked among the top in the nation. UF has 16 colleges and more than 200 research, service and education centers, bureaus and institutes, making us one of the most comprehensive universities in the country. The University of Florida and the UF academic health centers represent a 4.6 billion dollar enterprise. And our passionate alumni consistently show their devotion to their university through generous donations of their time and money, not to mention their support for UF's national championship-winning athletic program!
Where we are today is due in large measure to President Machen's nearly 10-year tenure. Under Bernie's leadership, we have built new state-of-the-art, sustainable educational and research facilities, significantly increased research funding and embraced innovation and entrepreneurship. He created the technology incubator Florida Innovation Hub at UF and partnered with the community to grow the surrounding area into a major economic development project. He created Florida Opportunity Scholars for students who are the first in their families to attend college, doubled the endowment and helped the university become more financially independent in an era of decreasing state financial support.
I am confident our search committee will find a successor who can build on President Machen's accomplishments. Our next president will be a leader of great intellect and integrity, as well as a visionary, strategic thinker, passionate advocate, and effective fundraiser. This person will have the ability and experience to lead a complex, multi-faceted organization that is one of the most comprehensive university and healthcare systems in the country.
This is an exciting era for the University of Florida, and I look forward to working on this next step with the search committee and all who love UF. You can find the names and biographical information for the search committee, as well as our senior advisors, on the UF website, http://list.uff.ufl.edu/t/1161706/6632863/500/0/, and the Gators for Higher Education website, http://list.uff.ufl.edu/t/1161706/6632863/75247/0/. We will post updates on the search on those websites as well.
Sincerely,
C. David Brown II Chairman UF Board of Trustees
