What is a dead period?
During a dead period a college coach may not have face-to-face contact with college-bound student-athletes or their parents, and may not watch student-athletes compete or visit their high schools. Coaches may write and telephone student-athletes or their parents during a dead period.
I'm pretty sure they are still allowed to text and DM recruits during the dead period. Just no coach initiated phone calls or in-person visits allowed.

Most schools would self-report it and half all recruiting of the athlete. Think that will happen here?

Crimson Tide coaches reach out to Jacob Copeland after national title win
Alabama coach Nick Saban never loses sight of the big picture, so even in the postgame glow of the program's fifth national championship in the last nine seasons, the Crimson Tide coaching staff was apparently already back to work on its recruiting class late Monday night.
Highly coveted 4-star wide receiver Jacob Copeland, a former Florida commit who remains a top target of the Gators, tweeted that he was contacted by the Tide after its epic 26-23 win over Georgia and seemed impressed by the gesture.
Copeland, from Pensacola, Fla., is ranked the No. 9 WR in the Class of 2018, according to the 247Sports composite. He de-committed from Florida during the coaching coach, but he has been a priority target for new coach Dan Mullen and his staff (with new freshman quarterback Emory Jones making his own push for Copeland).
SEC Country's Zach Abolverdi ranked Copeland No. 1 on Florida's WR wish list and considers Alabama and Florida to be the prospect's top suitors. He's set to visit Alabama on Jan. 26 and Florida on Feb. 2 before making his decision by National Signing Day.
Copeland also tweeted his support of Saban and the Tide prior to the game Monday night.
While Alabama used its national spotlight to make another strong impression on Copeland, Florida wide receivers coach Billy Gonzales made a compelling sales pitch of his own last month when he told Copeland he envisioned him in the mold of former Gators star Percy Harvin.
"'You're another Percy.' That's what he told me," Copeland told SEC Country. "Footwork wise, a lot of coaches don't really look at that. So just knowing that he watched my footwork and the way I get around to make himself open, that made me lock him in real close."
The two are in regular communication and his recruitment will remain a top story line for the Gators over this next month.

Florida basketball could be without PG Chris Chiozza
The Gators got some surprising and not so positive news Monday when senior point guard Chris Chiozza tested positive for strep throat.
He is being held out of practice and his status for the Gators' home game Wednesday night with Mississippi State is now in jeopardy. The team was optimistic Chiozza would be able to play, but it is expected to be a game-day decision.
Chiozza might be the most indispensable player on this Florida roster. He averages a team-high 31.7 minutes per game and is the unquestioned floor leader, having come through in the clutch yet again Saturday at Missouri with a steal and game-winning layup in the final seconds.
Chiozza is averaging a career-best 13.1 points along with 5.8 assists per contest. If he can't play, regular 2-guard KeVaughn Allen would likely handle a larger share of the point guard duties while freshman Michael Okauru could see an increase in playing time.
Mississippi State comes into Gainesville with a 13-2 overall record and 1-1 mark in the SEC, while the Gators (11-4, 3-0) are unbeaten in conference play.

Gators welcome mid-year enrollees
The Florida football team will receive some new additions this week.
Eight signees are scheduled to enroll Monday and begin classes at UF. The Gators welcome quarterback Emory Jones, running backs Dameon Pierce and Iverson Clement, offensive linemen Noah Banks (JUCO) and Chris Bleich, linebacker/safety Amari Burney and defensive backs Trey Dean and Randy Russell.
All eyes will be on Jones in spring practice as he competes with quarterbacks Feleipe Franks, Kyle Trask and Jake Allen. However, the top-50 overall recruit is not the only incoming player who addresses a position of need for Florida coach Dan Mullen.

Pierce and Clement are both talented ball carriers with skill sets that differ from Florida's current backs. Banks and Bleich will help the numbers along the offensive line, while Burney, Dean and Russell give the Gators some much-needed depth on defense.
"Just the general philosophy of enrolling early I think gives you a jump-start in your college career," Mullen said after the early signing period. "They also get to go through an offseason conditioning program and to get to go through spring ball. I do think it helps them with the foundation of building for their future, and certainly with the opportunity to get on the field early in their career."
Florida support staff changes
Florida director of player personnel Drew Hughes left the program over the weekend to accept the same position at Tennessee. Hughes had been at UF since January 2014 and helped the Gators sign back-to-back top-15 recruiting classes.
"Drew has done a really good job working, I guess maybe even adjusting to, what we're looking for," Mullen said of Hughes after the early signing period. "In the change of recruiting style, the change of possible personnel and what we're looking for out of the players, but also change in the character and the makeup of the players that we're looking for. So I think he's done a really good job for us, helping transition through the staff, trying to be as organized as he can and trying to get us after as many players as he can of kind of being that link."
In addition to Hughes, on-campus recruiting director John Herron and program assistant Ryan Smith are no longer on Florida's support staff.

Florida's Billy Gonzales compares WR Jacob Copeland to Percy Harvin

Former Florida wide receiver Percy Harvin was one of Jacob Copeland's favorite players growing up.
The 4-star wide receiver now has a chance to play for Harvin's position coach in college, Billy Gonzales. He served as Florida's receivers coach from 2005-09 and returned to the Gators in late November with new head coach Dan Mullen.
Copeland is the No. 1 target for Gonzales, who has been recruiting the top-100 overall recruit since the spring of 2016. Gonzales offered him when he was at Mississippi State, but Copeland said he didn't have interest in the Bulldogs.
With Gonzalez now in Gainesville, he communicates regularly with the former Gators commit.
"Florida was already a top school for me," Copeland said. "Now Coach Gonzales is there and we're always wrapping it up. After he was hired, he hit me up and said it was meant for him to coach me.
"I'd love to play for him. He has put players in the league. Just knowing that he's got a good background and coached Percy at Florida. He wants to use me at the same position."
During their in-home visit in December, Gonzales pulled up Copeland's highlights on his phone and started analyzing the receiver's game with him. His evaluation blew Copeland away.
"'You're another Percy.' That's what he told me," Copeland said. "Footwork wise, a lot of coaches don't really look at that. So just knowing that he watched my footwork and the way I get around to make himself open, that made me lock him in real close."
Though Copeland appreciates being compared to one of his favorite players, he's not trying to be the next Harvin if he does go to Florida.
"It somewhat does," Copeland said when asked if the comparison excites him. "When people tell me I could be another Percy, I tell them I don't want to be another Percy. I want to be the first and only Jacob Copeland."
Copeland is ranked the nation's No. 9 wide receiver and No. 54 overall prospect in the 247Sports Composite. He visited Tennessee last month and will take trips to Texas A&M (Jan. 19), Alabama (Jan. 26) and Florida (Feb. 2) before making his decision on National Signing Day.
"This last month is going to be crazy. Schools are going to be coming by the house," Copeland said. "When Coach Mullen took the job, I was one of his first calls. I wasn't even committed to Florida and he wanted to talk to me ASAP. He's going to come do an-home visit an in January."

With Trevon Grimes and Van Jefferson transferring to Florida, the Gators won't sign more than three wide receiver recruits in their 2018 class. Corey Gammage is currently committed, but he's not expected to stick with his pledge.
Here are the top targets at the position:
1. Jacob Copeland, 4-star WR, Escambia High School (Pensacola, Fla.)
Copeland is the No. 1 target at the position for Florida coach Dan Mullen and receivers coach Billy Gonzales. He visited Tennessee last month and will take trips to Texas A&M (Jan. 19), Alabama (Jan. 26) and Florida (Feb. 2) before making his decision on National Signing Day. The Crimson Tide and Gators are considered his top teams.
2. Justin Watkins, 4-star WR, East Ridge High School (Clermont, Fla.)
Florida is now the leader for Watkins after the latest developments in his recruitment. He was scheduled to decide between Alabama and LSU at the Under Armour All-America Game, but neither school was ready to accept his pledge. Watkins will now officially visit Florida on Friday and could be on commitment watch this weekend.
3. Tommy Bush, 4-star WR, Samuel Clemens High School (Schertz, Texas)
Bush received an offer from the Gators on Dec. 13 and has a relationship with new UF assistant Brian Johnson, who recruited him last year as Houston's offensive coordinator. Bush has already visited Georgia, Michigan State and Nebraska. Florida is fighting to land one of his final trips along with Baylor, Notre Dame and Ole Miss.
4. Anthony Schwartz, 4-star WR, American Heritage High School (Plantation, Fla.)
The Gators led for Schwartz in the summer and fall, but the coaching changes at UF opened the door for Auburn. Schwartz committed to the Tigers at the Under Armour All-America Game, but his recruitment may not be over yet. The Gators could still host Schwartz on an official visit this month, though their chances are better with Watkins.
5. Justyn Ross, 4-star WR, Central High School (Phenix City, Ala.)
Ross and fellow top-100 receiver Jalen Preston are considering a potential trip to Florida this month. Both appear to be long shots, but Ross is more likely to make his way to Gainesville. He has a relationship with Gators QB early enrollee Emory Jones and communicates with Mullen and Gonzales. Alabama, Auburn and Clemson are the favorites for Ross.

New QB Emory Jones officially moves in at Florida
Florida's football players returned to campus over the weekend and its eight early enrollees moved in for the first time in preparation for the new semester.
That included high-profile quarterback signee Emory Jones, who decided to be a Gator just a few weeks ago while capping a whirlwind end to his recruitment.
Jones spoke to reporters about his excitement to get going at Florida last week in Orlando during his experience at the Under Armour All-America Game.
"They want me to work hard and compete. They told me it's going to be hard for a freshman to come in and start, so I know I have to get to work, compete with a lot of guys there now. I'm ready for it," Jones said.
"… I feel like I'm the type of dude to come in and change a program around. There's not really any pressure to it. This is what I do. I worked so hard for this and it's all paying off now. I definitely accept this challenge. I know what I have to do."
Meanwhile, Jones continues to try to boost Florida's recruiting efforts. He furthered his rapport with top wide receiver target Jacob Copeland last week in Orlando and continues to make a not-so-subtle push to land the undecided playmaker, with a little help this time from new Gators running back Dameon Pierce.

Florida basketball all alone atop SEC
It's very early in the conference season, sure, but the Florida men's basketball team has nonetheless asserted itself atop the SEC standings as the only 3-0 team in the league. (Auburn is off to a 2-0 start.)
The Gators twice trailed by at least 10 points two separate times Saturday at Missouri before rallying back for a dramatic 77-75 win as senior point guard Chris Chiozza stole a pass and scored the game-winning layup in the final seconds.
That final play is just the latest clutch performance from Chiozza and is worth a second (or third or fourth) look. Check it out here.
Meanwhile, Florida returns to its home court to host Mississippi State on Wednesday before traveling to play at Ole Miss on Saturday.

Senior point guard Chris Chiozza has strep throat and won't practice for Florida on Monday or Tuesday.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Two days after leading the Florida basketball team to a dramatic last-second win at Missouri, senior point guard Chris Chiozza was diagnosed with strep throat, putting his status for the Gators' game Wednesday night against Mississippi State in jeopardy.
Chiozza won't practice Monday or Tuesday and the team remains hopeful he'll be able to play against the Bulldogs, but it could come down to a game day decision.
Florida coach Mike White had already finished speaking with reporters Monday morning, lauding Chiozza's play, when word came out from the team's medical staff. Chiozza had been scheduled to speak with the media as well, but he was not feeling well and proceeded to meet with the trainers.
Chiozza has been the leader of this Florida team, helping the Gators (11-4) to a 3-0 start in SEC play, including his clutch performance Saturday when he stole a pass with the clock ticking down and raced for the game-winning layup before the buzzer in a 77-75 win at Missouri.
"Right when he made the steal, I remember looking up at the clock immediately and thinking, 'Yeah, he's got time.' And then I thought, 'Boy, I love Chris Chiozza. I'm glad he's on my team,'" White said.
Chiozza ranks third on the Gators in scoring at 13.1 points per game while also averaging 5.8 assists in a team-high 31.7 minutes per contest.
If he can't play Wednesday night, junior guard KeVaughn Allen would likely take a large share of the point guard responsibilities while freshman Mike Okauru would probably see more playing time.
Mississippi State visits with a 13-2 overall record and 1-1 mark in the SEC.
