Report: Will Grier suspended for season for NCAA rules violation
- Thomas Goldkamp - 10 minutes ago
The road for the undefeated Florida Gators is about to get a whole lot tougher, and not just because No. 6 LSU looms on the schedule this weekend.
GridironNow.com's Mike Huguenin reports that No. 8 Florida will announce Monday that starting redshirt freshman quarterback Will Grier has been suspended for the rest of the season for a violation of NCAA rules. Florida has a press conference scheduled for 2:30 p.m. ET.
Additionally, the Miami Herald's Jesse Simonton reports that Grier's suspension is for a violation of the NCAA's substance-abuse policy involving the drug ligandrol, which carries with it a one-year calendar ban. NCAA rules require players to take a second test after a first positive test. Upon confirmation of the positive second test, a player becomes ineligible to compete.
Sources inform GatorBait.net that no already completed Florida games are in jeopardy. Grier can also appeal the decision, with an appeal due within 48 hours of the second failed test unless an extension is granted. He would remain ineligible during the appeal, though the hearing committee will "make a good-faith reasonable effort to hear the appeal before the student-athlete’s next contest or within 48 hours of the institution’s notice of intent to appeal, whichever is longer."
Grier has helped lead Florida to a 6-0 start overall and a 4-0 start in the SEC, giving the Gators a comfortable cushion atop the SEC East standings. He has gone 106-161 (65.8%) passing for 1,204 yards with 10 touchdowns and three interceptions while also racking up 36 carries for 116 yards and two touchdowns.
The offense has been far from prolific, but Grier has played well enough to score points and allow the defense to play with the lead more often than not. Without him, Florida will be forced to turn to sophomore Treon Harris.
Harris has played sparingly this year after starting the opener and splitting reps with Grier in the second game of the season. He served a one-game suspension against Tennessee, and Grier has started every game since.
On the year, Harris is 19-27 (70.4%) passing for 269 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. He has also rushed 10 times for 63 yards.
The Gators will take on the Tigers this Saturday in Baton Rouge at 7 p.m. ET with a national broadcast on ESPN.
