With Jorge Powell out for the remainder of the season and uncertainty surrounding the status of Austin Hardin, Florida coach Jim McElwain sent out a call for help to the student body earlier this week in hopes of finding a place-kicker. The response has been somewhat overwhelming.

McElwain said more than 200 students have signed up for kicking tryouts, and he expects to find someone there capable of kicking extra points and field goals should Hardin not be able to answer the call against Georgia next week.

"As long as they can flip it through the uprights, I'm good with it," McElwain said Wednesday on the SEC coaches' teleconference. "We had I think a final count of 216. We're still working through it right now. Obviously, a lot of things NCAA-wise before we make any decision. But by the end of the week, we hope to have some candidates that could come out and help us.

"Hey, this is something that other places have done in the past. We were successful with it at Colorado State and ended up getting a heck of a kicker (Jared Roberts) out of it."

The Gators have a somewhat dire situation at place-kicker coming out of the loss to LSU last Saturday.

Powell injured his knee in the first half and will miss the remainder of the season, McElwain confirmed Wednesday. That leaves Hardin as UF's only option, and his situation is somewhat tenuous. He injured his leg in the Kentucky game and missed the next three games, creating some doubt whether he would return at all this season.

When Powell went down in Baton Rouge, Hardin stepped up even though there apparently are still some injury concerns.

"Jorge is obviously going to be done (for the season)," McElwain said. "He did a good job when he got in there. Hardin obviously missed some games because he was hurt, so we just need to make sure we've got a plan. We'll end up with somebody."

McElwain said he expects Hardin to be ready for the Georgia game.

"We'll find out," he said. "I would hope he could help this football team and come out and kick. He did in the last game and hit some pretty good ones. I'm expecting him to be there, but at the same time, you've got to have a plan. That's what we're doing."
