Re: [gatortalk] Re: [gatornews] [SUN]: Top 100 WR Jacob Copeland de-commits from Gators 2018 class

I am coming around on Mullen. I liked his demeanor and enthusiasm in the press conference, (something I don't remember being a strength of his before), I like that he knows what he's getting into and that he really wants to be here, and I like that he has hit the ground running. Mullen wasn't my first choice, but despite my offer to share years of wisdom and deep insights into the search process, SS didn't ask my opinion before making the hire. However, I'm a natural optimist who really wants to be excited about Gator football, so I choose to see the potential here.

I do agree that coaches make too much and student athletes make too little — it's also crazy that we will be paying four head coaches next year — but that's a separate question to me than who our new coach is. I am getting behind Mullen and will stay there until he gives me reason to do otherwise.

P.S. Scooter Magruder perfectly captured my reactions during this coaching search. If you haven't clicked through to his video, you should.

It's a choice, most of these football players would not sniff college, much less UF without football.  And guess what, I played club lacrosse at UF, tore up both knees and have a bad neck, so yeah, the regular student can sacrifice the same way, just without the medical treatment and training staff.

And,  the athletes do get paid, the value of tuition, books, room and board for the regular student at UF is about $21,000 ($43,000 for out of state).  In addition to that the athletes now also get a stipend to account for the total cost of attendance – at UF I believe they get about $5000 per year, at FSU its like $8000…

And you can't just pay football and basketball, you have to pay every D1 athlete the same, most athletic departments would go broke.

Of course, I may be biased as I am paying out of state tuition for my daughter. She doesn't get the cool Nike swag, she had to fend for herself when the University shut down during Hurricane Martha, she doesn't have a separate dining hall, nutrition and medical staff or get dibs on the best residential facilities on campus.  In fact, she has to help pay for all of those things through the athletic fees that are automatically added to her tuition bill.  So do I feel sorry for the athletes?  Absolutely not.  Should we be doing something to ensure their safety, absolutely.

Getting off my soapbox, sorry this is a sore point for me…

Darlene.   I saw where you may have gotten the statistic on his record against top-25 teams.  It would appear that it is not accurate.  Last year at the time of the article, he was 4-25 and he added another one this year.  (https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/sec-football/record-every-current-sec-head-coach-vs-ranked-teams) .  I would add that the top 25  teams he played every year included Alabama, Auburn, and LSU.  It would be rare to be favored in those games.

Also a 2-18 record against top 25 teams. Here's my concern, and articulated by someone in another forum. I understand it was a safe hire, but I do not understand the $70m for eight years that's being reported. We're not going to be able to fire him. But the main thing is this:

Stricklin promised us he would put the fun back in Gator football, and hired a coach that will plow it up the middle 50% of the time.  Our passing game will remain in the stone age.  We can't afford to fire him.  It doesn't make you a bad fan if you have a little common sense and see where this is headed.

According to the Orlando Sentinel Mullen has 3 nine win seasons at MSU. In their history they had 2 nine win seasons before Mullen.

MSU has the second lowest sports budget in the SEC, to Vanderbilt.

Mullen considered them to be a "developmental team", meaning they had to bring in "potential" talent and make them better players.

They have been to 8 bowl games in a row under Dan Mullen. No one has ever accomplished this at MSU.

Mullen's offense at Florida was #6 in the country the year he was hired at MSU, #1 in the SEC.

There are a lot of reasons to hire Mullen at Florida if we just look at the stats.

Yes, a number of recruits were going to leave the class regardless. But I disagree. Dan Mullen is not a good coach. IMO we will never be more than mediocre under him (8 occasionally 9 win seasons) and will be looking for a new coach in 4-5 years. While he has had a few good seasons, he has a losing SEC record and I don't think he has ever coached in the SEC Championship Game as a head coach. This is a horrible choice.

GoGators!!!

It could be worse. We could still have McElwain. Or, we could have Kelly, another self absorbed head case.

Florida has never in its existence hired a new coach before the end of the season. We'll get a coach. And, he will be a good one.

Florida's 38-22 loss to Florida State Saturday wasn't their only one of the night.

Jacob Copeland, the No. 7-ranked wide receiver in the 2018 class by 247Sports, announced via Twitter his de-commitment from the University of Florida.

Copeland committed to the Gators on Aug. 2, but has continued taking recruiting visits throughout his senior year, most notably to Alabama.

With Copeland's de-commitment, the Gators have 16 verbal commitments in the 2018 class.
