The Gators picked up a commitment Friday from one of the nation's most highly coveted defensive ends, Zachary Carter.
The Tampa native, ranked the No. 2 overall strongside defensive end in the 2017 class by Rivals, announced his verbal commitment to Florida via his Twitter account.
The 6-foot-4, 235-pound Hillsborough product had reportedly narrowed his top four schools to Clemson, South Florida, Tennessee and Florida, with the Gators and Tigers emerging as the favorites for his commitment.
Carter participated in Clemson coach Dabo Swinney's football camp held June 15 and took an official visit to Death Valley for the team's 23-13 win over Florida State last season.
But UF has been recruiting him aggressively as well, with defensive line coach Chris Rumph making the trip to Tampa on May 19 to see Carter compete in Hillsborough's 14-0 win over Wharton High.
With Carter's commitment, which is non-binding until he signs a national letter of intent, the Gators have nine commitments in the 2017 class.
