[gatortalk] Re: [gatornews] [SUN]: Daily Football Fix: 5 potential UF all-stars

Anzalone is going to be one we will all need to hold our breath everytime he makes contact.  Gators dont have alot of depth at LB.. and he's been injury prone before now.

He.  must.  stay.  healthy.

Daily Football Fix: 5 potential UF all-stars

Florida defensive back Quincy Wilson catches a ball during a practice in March. Wilson could have a break-out season.

As has been the case in recent years, the Florida Gators are not getting a whole lot of love in the preseason magazines and in predictions from around the country.

Most are picking the Gators to finish third -- a distant third, at that -- in the SEC East, and it's hard to find UF players on the preseason All-American and All-SEC teams.

But, as we have seen in the past, there will be some Florida players who may be overlooked now, but will emerge as potential all-stars over the course of the season.

Here are five Gators with a chance to do that:

1. Caleb Brantley, defensive tackle — It's hard to fathom why he's being completely overlooked after the way he played in the second half of last season. He was dominant. If he continues on his current path on what should be another very good UF defense, Brantley has a chance to become an All-American this season.

2. Quincy Wilson, cornerback — A year ago, Jalen Tabor played a little bit in the shadow of Vernon Hargreaves III, who went on to become a first-round NFL draft pick. Tabor is the one getting the love this preseason, but just like Tabor did a year ago, Wilson has the potential to emerge as Florida's best defensive back in 2016.

3. David Sharpe, offensive tackle — His immense potential started to shine through in the spring, and if he continues to work at his trade like he's done the past five or six months, he could quickly make a name for himself. He certainly has the size, strength and athletic ability to be one of the top offensive tackles in the SEC, which of course, also means in the nation.

4. Brian Cox Jr., defensive end — He makes his living grinding away with a relentless work ethic. He isn't flashy, but the coaches love the way he goes about his business, never taking a play off in games or practice. He's flashed potential elite pass-rushing skills, and he's been strong against the run. It's a combination that could get him noticed with a strong senior season.

5. Alex Anzalone, linebacker — He may be the most overlooked five-star prospect in the nation due to a series of injuries, the latest to his shoulder. If/when, and it's a big if/when, he's healthy, Anzalone is an absolute beast -- a smart, aggressive defender who runs like a safety and hits like a nasty middle linebacker. His coaches and teammates know how dominant he can be. It's a matter of staying healthy and turning him loose this season.
