There's no quick fix when it comes to building a college football program.
It takes patience that athletic administrators often won't extend to unproven coaches who have yet to win championships. Fans want to see results. ADs, too.
Here's a look at five college football coaches who are on the hot seat next season:
Charlie Strong, Texas --- The former Gator defensive coordinator and Louisville coach has been the victim of a passionate fanbase with unrealistic expectations. But Baylor's fall from grace could open the door for Strong to lead the Longhorns to a breakout season. Strong is 11-14 in two seasons at Texas. A win over Oklahoma in the Red River Shootout saved Strong's job last year, but he'll need to post more big wins in the Big 12 to survive past the 2016 season.
Dana Holgorsen, West Virginia -- Holgorsen led West Virginia to an 8-5 record last season, including a numbing loss in the regular-season finale against Kansas State. If things don't pick up, Holgorsen may not have the chance to coach Gator transfer quarterback Will Grier, who won't be eligible to play until the 2017 season. Holgorsen is a dynamic offensive mind, but it hasn't translated on the field, where he's 31-28 in FBS games since 2012.
Les Miles, LSU -- Don't forget, Les was left twisting in the wind last November before being brought back to campus. Expectations will be high with running back Leonard Fournette back, but the Miles era could end if LSU fails to develop a passing game to complement Fournette, can't beat Alabama and stumbles to three or four losses.
Derek Mason, Vanderbilt -- Nobody doubts Mason can coach defense. He put a scare in Florida's quest for an SEC East crown by holding the Gators to single digits in UF's eventual 9-7 win over the Commodores last November. But in two seasons, Mason has led Vanderbilt to just a 4-17 record against FBS teams and 2-14 record against SEC opponents. Mason will need to develop a more dynamic offense to complement his defense to keep his job beyond the 2016 season.
Darrell Hazell, Purdue -- Somehow, Hazell retained his job for a fourth season despite posting a 3-30 record vs. FBS season and a 2-24 record in the Big Ten. For a proud program that's produced NFL quarterbacks Drew Brees, Kyle Orton, Bob Griese and Jim Everett, that's unacceptable.
